Ooooh. I also hated Lord of the Flies. I used to think of that book every time I went for a run on a rainy day in my glasses, pre-LASIK. Literally all I remember about it. 😂

Thanks for sharing this. I don’t typically do reading challenges because I have specific genres I love and find the lists too creative for my liking. lol. But I’ll check this out. I’ve been diversifying my reading for awhile now but there’s so much more to branch out to and try.

Ooooh. I also hated Lord of the Flies. i challenged myself to read a bunch of classics a few years ago. I also really didn’t like Wuthering Heights but some of ones I loved were Dracula, The Woman in White, Call of the Wild, The Moonstone, and Pride and Prejudice

My absolute favorite classic is "The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling" by Henry Fielding. It's one of the first novels ever and even though certain parts are a bit dated the characters and story are so much fun and I love it. I re-read it every few years.

If you have StoryGraph, they have the challenge and there are a lot of books listed for each prompt already. I’ve found a couple of books I’ve never heard of but look really good that way.

I usually just do number goals and use goodreads. I did try new genres last year so maybe I’ll do that again?
The 52 book challenge looks fun though so I may use it when I’m in the what to read next mode.

I read a lot of the classics since my degree is in English lit and I took honors in HS. I trudged through enough school. 😂

PBS did a miniseries of it recently. I only saw the first episode and it didn’t grab me, but I’m curious if it was at all faithful to the book.

I was intentional about reading more books by BIPOC a few years ago, but I’ve gotten away from that. I should try to make that a goal again this year.

I find the Bookstagram etc. culture so weird and oddly competitive. There was a suggested post on Threads this morning by someone complaining that she saw someone who already had 14 “read” books on her Goodreads in 2024. She was truly irate about “cheating” or something, like it was an epic scandal. Some people were replying that maybe they started a bunch of books and just finished them yesterday, and other people arguing that that was dishonest or not the “right way” to track it. Anyway, it just made me laugh. So this is me, admitting I don’t care if people are honest about when and how much they read. It won’t keep me up at night. I felt very old, very Bert Cooper,

I have been diversifying my reading list too. My spreadsheet tracks author background and this year was much more even than before (although those white american women still dominate the genres I like to read). I was sitting around 42% non-white authors and about 25% non-American.
The spreadsheet I bought has a list for country of origin and already have books listed from each, but I only made it about half way through the list last year.

I felt very old, very Bert Cooper, Timely because I read 40 pages yesterday to finish a book and I couldn’t decide where to put it. I finally decided to consider it my 2023 book since it was mostly read then

Yeah that miniseries was not great, I didn't even make it through 1 episode. There's a 1997 BBC version that's decent. But the book is packed to the brim with events and characters and doesn't lend itself well to TV I think.

I bought a "Always Fully Booked" planner for the first time this year, and it has a bunch of reading challenges included in it, so I'm excited to do those. They are: -An A - Z challenge, - the Fully Booked Challenge (similar to pop sugar etc.) -"On the cover" challenge -Reading Rainbow (cover challenge as well) -Genre Reading Challenge -Red through the ages challenge (books set in different time periods) -Around the World
I will also participate in the Books in the Freezer reading challenge (horror themed), and may check out the 52 books one and pop sugar, I haven't decided yet. I don't get very stressed if I don't finish reading challenges for the most part.
I also do a pure # of books read challenge - I set it for 80 this year I believe, since that is how many I read last year.

I'm definitely doing PopSugar, and am thinking about Book Riot's Read Harder. I also do a couple from various Facebook groups, Kat's Booknerds Read Diversely and Florish and Blott's Harry Potter and the Order of the Planners reading challenge are some of my other favorites. What book planner are you using for this year? I love my book planner and doing reading challenges! I am doing a bullet journal inspired by a couple of tiktoks (here's one www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8CS4nKw/)I have enjoyed bullet journaling for other things so I thought it would be a fun way to track/gamify my reading Bullet journaling is so fun! I got a pre-made book journal, but will do spreads on dot grid pages for my challenges and stuff like that. I still need to finish setting it up for this year though.
