There’s a shelter in place for a man with a gun on my street. Listening to the police scanner, trying to figure out what’s going on. 😞

Update: The man surrendered and was transported by EMS. His parents were not at the house, thank goodness.
It’s a barricade situation. I can see the police with shields and K-9 units out my window. The family involved could definitely use prayers that it all is resolved without bloodshed.

Minerva I'm glad he surrendered and no one was hurt. I hope he gets the help he needs and that his parents have someone to help them, too.

DS1 was diagnosed with dyslexia today and i feel crap that we didn't realize it sooner. He was assessed before but between COVID and dual language, it clearly was missed. He's going to get the support he needs now, but i wish we could have gotten him help sooner. We are more than likely going to hold him back a year as both his psychologists agree it's the better option for him.

blurnette989 fwiw I held both of my dyslexic kids back a year and it was the best thing for them. One repeated kinder and one repeated 3rd. Having a diagnosis is the first step to getting the right help but I understand there are a lot of emotions surrounding it. Dyslexia can absolutely be a superpower once you know how to make accomodations.

Hugs blurnette989 Covid really messed so much up don't feel bad for not knowing before at least now you do and you can start helping him. One of DS1's friends repeated a grade in 5th and it was so good for him. He's really happy he did it.

Thanks koko and adelbert. I appreciate the kind words. I do think it's the right choice, especially because here middle school starts at 5th grade and everyone says the workload increases. But it has been a tough decision, as different people have such different opinions.

blurnette989, huge hugs. My younger has dyslexia and is also dual language. Our discocery was also delayed during COVID. I'm not sure how Portugal handles the science of reading and language acquisition. In the US (unsurprisingly), many curriculums do not align with what we know about how the brain works. There are some interesting studies on dual language learners. It's simply amazing anyone learns to read or write in English. For example - in English, we don't end words with the letter "v". We add a silent "e" to the word - have, give, solve. Just amazing. If you ever want citations (because that's who I am as a person), or a listening ear - LMK.

But it has been a tough decision, as different people have such different opinions. Fifth grade is also when middle school starts here and it is a huge jump in work and pressure. Grade school is nice and lovely and pretty low key and then all of the sudden every little mistake matters and everything is more intense. I'm not sure how it is in Portugal but here it's normally a hard transition for all kids.

At work last week one of my colleagues from another building came out in an email as a transphobe/TERF. Did not have that on my bingo card, that's for sure. We have had a group going around and taking all the books from the pride display in an effort to "save" the children. So far they've hit two or three of our buildings. She basically commented in support of them. I was very *shockedpikachu*.

It's more than enough to have to guard against public instigators, but to have to keep defenses up inside your "house" is a whole other level. I don't know your library's policies, but this would go strongly against ours. I can't imagine a scenario in which the employee doing this would be kept on.

Ls2012, elle, goldenbird, I'm not sure if anything will happen to her. Maybe a letter in her personnel file. Our YS manager sent out a great email shutting her down and then a couple days after that the director sent out an email to "reaffirm" our values, that also eviscerated her. This isn't the first time she's said things or been reprimanded. One time at a happy hour like 10 years ago she cornered me and berated me for 15 minutes because I disagreed with her about keeping kids away from screens 100%. I've disliked her greatly ever since.

Filed under things i didn’t know that could happen… on our drive down to OBX yesterday, the sunroof on our outback exploded. My husband almost always keeps the shade open and I’m so glad it was not! I am also very glad this house has a garage while we figure out how to replace it.
