Women should start getting screening mammograms at the age of 40, rather than 50, according to new draft recommendations from an influential national health panel, which found that starting breast cancer screening 10 years earlier could save thousands of lives per year. The draft recommendations, issued Tuesday by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, state that women who are between ages 40 and 74 should have screening mammograms every two years. The guidance would apply to cisgender women and everyone else assigned female at birth. Health panel recommends women get screening mammograms at age 40 www.washingtonpost.com/wellness/2023/05/09/mammogram-age-40-breast-cancer-screening/As a lucky "start at 35" person because of family history (everyone involved is still alive and no recurring cases!) this is frustrating. The article discusses how mammograms aren't great for "people with dense breasts" but fails to mention that younger breast tissue - as in, under age 50 - is MORE DENSE and harder to scan. The panel cries about lack of research on other scans for early detection - how about someone actually does some? My gyno recommended ultrasounds every other year in addition to my annual mammos and it's so very frustrating to pay out of pocket for what is theoretically a better screening test, while spending years getting mammos that are unlikely to detect anything yet on my "young" (40 now) boobs. I am all for early detection efforts, and hopefully more cases will get caught early and taken care of with this. It feels like there's more they could do to update the actual screening test to be adequate for the population they're aiming to help.

Reading the full article felt like whiplash!

The mayor of Fort Worth, who is super red, easily won her relection on Saturday but yesterday put out a statement supporting raising the age from 18 to 21 to buy assault rifles that just came out of committee in TX legislature. She got slammed of course but my husband and I were saying for the first time in a while we felt a shift in Texas towards maybe some restrictions would be acceptable. Raising the age to 21 is not enough but maybe baby steps can help get some people over their extreme reluctance for gun reform.
Also of note, the county Fort Worth is in only saw 8.91% of registered voters casting ballots on Saturdays election. Even if you don't have someone realistic to support, voting against status quo incumbents still is better than not voting. It kills me to see people vote that little on things like school boards and mayor.

Apparently Marco Rubio called the jury 'a joke.' The DSCC should be putting up billboards all over saying "Marco Rubio says every day Americans are a joke"

I haven't read any details, but my first reaction was to ask whether it was a DV situation where she creatively solved the problem and then tried to help the kids deal with it.

My first thought was that it was two adults using drugs and then she covered it up. But it actually turns out she changed his life insurance policy so she was the beneficiary. When he realized she did that, he cut her out of his will and didn’t tell her.

I keep typing and erasing because I don't want to come across as ageist but the truth is she looks very frail/unwell.

There was a knife fight on a high school campus here today and, predictably, the comments are all about how if you ban guns they’ll just use knives and it’s like…but notice how no one died?? Or was even seriously injured? If mental gymnastics was an Olympic sport…
