byjove, yes. IEP or not anyone can opt out of the state testing. Obv not in VA anymore but Mh and I were just talking about opting Max out. I had so much horrible anxiety over state testing, I wish we had known we had a choice

So MH has worked for one of the big tech companies for 2.5 years now, remote the entire time - with the idea that remote would always remain an option. Now surprise! they want everyone in the office 3 days a week beginning May 1. Ummm so we live ~325 miles from the closest office. MH does not seem concerned but I am feeling very anxious about this.

mc13 many companies change these plans and never go back, so perhaps he is feeling this is the case or there are options for exceptions. I sometimes worried mine would send us back but with the survey results showing how much better WAHM staff are feeling vs in person staff, I am sure we are ok. Nothing about workplaces feel sure these days so I hope this works out well after May 1.

Yes, though we haven’t because tests don’t really bother DS. The school may pressure you to have her take the SOLs if they think she will pass because students with IEPs passing SOLs is a stat that is tracked by the state. You can absolutely say no, citing her test anxiety and health. There is a specific section in the IEP document where you choose to opt out. For this year, you probably need to work directly with her teacher and school administrators since it is urgent. Yes, I've sent a plea to the teachers/counselor, and we'll see what they say. I was more curious moving forward. She was borderline passing for math for the winter SOL (99th percentile for growth), and does for reading. You can.opt them out for any reason but there is a deadline. I opted DS1 out of SOL's in 2021 bc he wasn't vaccinated yet and would have had to go do the testing in school.

It's my 19th (!!!) anniversary today. We didn't plan anything special but enjoyed a nice day and the spring weather and broke out some of our expensive wine to go with dinner. Not too shabby for a Monday.

My 15YO was all hot to trot about peep flavored Pepsi but I couldn’t find it anywhere locally. Amazon came through for a not ridiculous price and I am so excited to put it in his Easter basket.

I watched 3,5 hours of testimony (out of 4) about dissolving our library district there have more Wednesday night. It ended with snot 95 against and ten support. 96 people of 125k threw a temper tantrum and this is gonna end up on a ballot wasting taxpayers time and money. It’s crazy but I’m so happy so many people showed up to support our library.

The IEP meeting is in a couple of hours. I feel the case is strong, but I'm nervous regardless.
Also my little sister's last day at legal aid in CA was yesterday. She gets a couple of weeks off before she starts her administrative judge training. Wild to have a soon to be Honorable in the family!

It was a year ago this week that we brought the kids to visit our new city for the first time! We moved three months later. It's cold and I'm missing spring in Virginia + the cherry blossoms, but it still feels like we made the right choice.

It mostly went fine, but even though we just finished the last IEP eligibility meetings in December, they have to treat this is as an initial request and are going to do a bunch of additional testing and have until the end of May to finish it (just a couple of weeks before school let's out). Ugh. They want to probe a bit more if there is a math learning disability beyond the anxiety (possible, but didn't show one last fall). They added some more accommodations to her 504 in the meantime and she is going to start meeting weekly 1-1 with the school counselor, and we have our outside counseling getting going. So much.

DD1's been rereading the Guts book, and I guess the main character in it goes to see a therapist and does some play based therapy (she was like will mine have a sandbox??). Her first time is today and she very dramatically stated last night "I have soooo much to discuss with my therapist tomorrow." LOL and I asked what are you going to tell her first? "Oh you know..." So thank you to the author of that book for helping to normalize therapy for DD and FX it goes well. The school counselor is also going to start seeing DD weekly, so hopefully that isn't overkill.

Good luck to your DD, byjove! I hope it helps. My DS has been doing CBT for several months now and it has been pretty fascinating to watch him open up to his therapist about his anxiety. She hears anything and everything that is on his mind. She’s having him work through bravery challenges to address specific types of anxiety. The rapport they’ve built seems to really help her motivate him.

I'll preface this by saying upfront DD2 (7) is ok.
We've had quite the week! DD2 was showering Sunday evening like normal and I went to tell her to wrap it up and called her name, no response. Called her name a couple more times, no response. Pull back the shower curtain and she is laying face down in the bathtub. Called her name again (was this a sick joke?), nothing, I tried to shake her, nothing. She was very still and honestly I couldn't tell if she was breathing. As I was entering full on panic mode, I went to lift her out of the tub and she finally came to. We never heard a thud. She was very confused. She was able to talk and move ok, but she immediately went to bed and she seemed kind of confused about everything so we were like WTF, and I brought her to the ER. When we were there they noticed she had a rash all over her arms and face. They started doing a bunch of tests (blood panels, urine, blood sugar, CT scan, EKG) and everything was looking normal (good!). DD2 said a few things to me that didn't make a lot of sense, and she doesn't remember anything after getting in the shower until I was picking her up, but a couple hours after we were at the ER she started to seem more like herself. The doctors came up with several theories of what happened, but they wanted to keep her for observation so we had to get transport to the closest children's hospital. We met with cardiology and neurology and apparently this is just about a classic unwitnessed first seizure. They are wondering if it was the perfect storm of conditions that triggered (maybe the rash was viral, or an allergy? they don't really know, but her discharge temp was 99.9, which for her is a fever) and hopefully it will never happen again. She had a normal EEG in the hospital.
So she is home now and seemingly back to normal. We are going to follow up with cardiology (she already sees one after DH's SCA, but everything has always been normal for her), but we are moving forward as this was a seizure. We have to get an MRI and are putting together a seizure action plan. We have to be hypervigilant the next couple of years (never alone, highly supervised water activities, no heights) (but also! let her live her life like normal!) and I'm having some difficulty reconciling the hyper vigilance vs normal life, but hopefully we'll figure that out more with time. I'm going to get her a watch I think since she does roam the neighborhood a bit (with a buddy though). So yeah. It's been a lot. She sleeps on a top bunk, of course, and DD1 is kind of a wreck right now as it is and her number 1 spot is her bed, so she won't take a top bunk, and there room doesn't really fit two beds... so we are having to figure that out so DD2 is in bed with me and DH is sleeping in the bunk bed until we figure this out. Anyway, so glad she's doing ok, and child life is a godsend. And also hospital chocolate cake.
