God bless the parent of one of N's friends at daycare, he just texted me to let me know next year's before/after county care registration starts tomorrow for the school the kids will be going to (and yet K registration isnt even open until next month). And also God bless the amazing woman at the care office I just spoke to, she walked me through everything and was AMAZING. Clearly I was not prepared. Wish me luck lol It’s cut throat in the county! I hope you get in with no problem. 🤞 The woman I spoke to said it was like Taylor Swift tickets. I'm afraid.

8:02 - he's already waitlisted. My gosh. Two minutes. A lot of kids at our neighborhood school get in off the waitlist each year, if it gives you any comfort. I’m not sure what options are hyper local to you, but there are also some great third party aftercare programs with bussing in the area. People at my school rave about Red Wagon and lots of families are happy with the martial arts after school programs.

The same dad told me his older kid was at a martial arts one nearby until a spot opened in the school, and it worked well for them, so will be checking that one out. Just funny to me how it was literally two minutes - Taylor Swift tickets indeed lol

I know you all have been part of our DD1 504 saga, so I thought I'd share things have taken a turn the last couple of weeks (I posted about math anxiety on the main board and received some useful feedback). She had strong anxiety going into a math test and she was using her coping skills as part of her 504, which was creating a distraction in the classroom, and her peers started saying being quiet, which was upsetting her to her, and teacher tried to help and made things worse, and DD cried through her math test while being hand held by the teacher and this has triggered a major depressive episode. Wheee!
So we have a pretty intense letter from the psychiatrist that says she needs out of gen ed math ASAP (I don't know how they can deny us the IEP at this point- we will raise hell if the VP from last fall puts up a fight) and we are trying our damndest to get this moving at the school. It also took over a week to get an "urgent appointment" with our psychiatrist, which is nuts and a sign of how crazy things are right now. He was really upset on DD's behalf that this happened. Kind of scared what this means down the road, but hopefully with math at her pace she can start gaining confidence. On top of this, it has naturally kicked up social anxiety and school refusal. I've been documenting with the teacher and counselor, but the counselor is also slammed and school response has been slow. I contacted the psych at central office who did DD's educational testing and was awesome and very sympathetic to see if she can help get things moving. Coincidentally (or not?), since I sent that email I have received acknowledgement by the school of our request to meet, but nothing about dates yet. At least the testing from last fall is all still valid and we don't have to wait for that.
Part of me is I wish we had pushed harder in December for the IEP, but at the same time, DH and I really didn't see this coming and DD had been making improvements and it wasn't clear to us at that point the gen ed environment was this bad for her. Despite the upset, she actually had her highest math test grade this year. So I have some guilt. Though things might have been ok-ish in the fall and things are worse now due to content. Her teacher had given us signals in mid Feb that she was showing some engagement struggles but we thought it was temporary.
She had also been doing well in the school anxiety small group and that ended last week, which we didn't know!, so we are now scrambling to find a new situation for her. Fun times.

byjove you have my sympathies and I'm sorry for all you're going through. I had a meeting yesterday for DD's 504 plan and am just so frustrated. Her biggest struggle is also math. Math is one of my strong subjects, but I wasn't taught common core, so we've watched a lot of YouTube and Kahn Academy videos. I looked up Mathnasium and some other independent math tutoring service and about choked on the cost. I know teachers and administrators are so burned out and I hate that kids are slipping through the cracks. It seems like the further we get into the school year (and now so close to the end) the anxiety gets worse. DD feels like she's going to end up so behind in 6th grade and regularly just word vomits all of her worries to me. She's seen the psychiatrist and we're waiting on a PA for a new non-stimulant med, but she also has to have a full psych eval because the anxiety is just so intense. It's.... a lot.

While part of the letter we have from the psychiatrist is about low self confidence leading to depression, etc., he adds that part of what needs to be addressed with the IEP are teaching math in a way to promote confidence and feelings of success, to help her overcome the anxiety. I don't know if any of that language might be helpful for you; I can report back when we find out how the school thinks they can do that. I have a PhD in a STEM field and have had a LOT lof math. To some degree her complete math overwhelm baffles me. Hugs back at you <3

The psychiatrist she's seeing has been DS1's psychiatrist since he was in 5th grade and she diagnosed him with PTSD and major depressive disorder, so she's keeping that in mind. I've been looking for a therapist for DD but not having much luck with anyone she can see soon, so the school asked for my ok to help with that. They are the ones who initially helped me get started finding treatment for DS1, so hopefully that's helpful. DD is very open to anything and says she just wants to feel better. This is all so hard!!

School is closed today because the roads were icy
I should be taking advantage and getting things done, but I'm also trying to just appreciate that I got to sleep in a little and the kids are playing nicely

Poor DD was so disappointed school was closed for Pi day. They were supposed to have a party and whoever memorized the most digits of Pi was going to get pied in the face. She's solid on 118 digits and was determined to win 😂
She's been asking all day if I think they'll still have their party tomorrow

My kindergartener has an All Day Play Day today and he was so excited. He brought a rollercoaster building game and his stuffed caticorn. I can't wait to hear about it.

DD practiced more last night and got 122 digits of Pi, which was the winner for her class! A kid in one of the other 4th grade classes got 167 digits 😱
They're having the actual party tomorrow so she has to wait to get her pie to the face, she's so excited 🤣

dc2london, Minerva, anyone else in VA with a kid with an IEP- can you opt out of state testing? DD1 had a social studies test today and shortly after reported to the nurse with chest pains. We are pretty sure this is anxiety, but she's never complained about them before (I got a doctor's appointment to get once over on her). The end of quarter is next Friday and she is scheduled to have reading SOL Monday, a science unit test Tuesday, and math SOL Wednesday. I don't think she can handle that. The school says they are working on scheduling the IEP meeting, but we don't have a date yet.

The school may pressure you to have her take the SOLs if they think she will pass because students with IEPs passing SOLs is a stat that is tracked by the state. You can absolutely say no, citing her test anxiety and health. There is a specific section in the IEP document where you choose to opt out. For this year, you probably need to work directly with her teacher and school administrators since it is urgent.

I was more curious moving forward. She was borderline passing for math for the winter SOL (99th percentile for growth), and does for reading.
