Yep. This article and the people interviewed are spot on. Harry is irritating me a lot. This is it: “Whilst I believe the racist treatment of Meghan by the royal family and press is abhorrent and speaks to the racism Black people face in the UK, I now believe that if Megan was accepted by the royal family and the press, they would be happy and willing participants in the racist and imperialist institution,” she tells HuffPost UK.“ 😒😒😒😒 I think this is going to really challenge a lot of American watchers who pinned a lot of hopes and expectations on this couple. I don't know if I would agree to "a lot." As with the Oprah interview and all of the fanfare with that for a handful of weeks, there are their detractors and their supporters and those who are kind of meh either way. I think most of their detractors are going to stay in that camp and ditto for their fans, there might be a few on the fence that might be pushed to the detractor side (or vice versa) but I don't see huge swaths of people abandoning ship. This is seemingly huge news right now, but six weeks from now, I predict it will be fairly quiet on this front as it was after the Oprah interview.

I think more what I meant is that it really ought to challenge a lot of folks who pinned their hopes and dreams on this couple. I read an "article" that said Harry soft pedaled the racism stuff to Bradby because he knows that British people need to be eased into the subject. My eyeballs were almost sprained.

This is where the root of my issue with his interviews this week lies. All the previous talk of learning and doing better for his family is wiped out by saying this, that his family didn't mean anything racist, and that he and Meg "love" Susan and she's not racist. Quite frankly it's bullshit and makes his previous statements look performative Shit talking his brother might be in poor taste, but walking back on the racism is astoundingly awful

I've only ready 30 pages so far, which is somehow "chapter 10", but I just can't get into it

It was very "let us make excuses for this poor white man who is doing his best" and somehow also "he's playing chess but you just think he's playing checkers."

I’ve made it to the frost bitten penis part. I don't know what to say to this, but it feels significant.

I’ve made it to the frost bitten penis part. I don't know what to say to this, but it feels significant. It really makes a lot more sense in context. Maybe not totally necessary, but is any part of this book totally necessary? I did laugh, which I believe was the point in including it.

This legit broke my heart. Those boys were not in a good way and all of the grown-ups around them failed them. Reading this part and also, assuming he didn't deliberately leave it out, they got no therapy afterward so he had no idea how to manage his grief and just got sent back to boarding school to tough it out, is just so sad. I simply cannot fathom this. Even in the 90s, even in the BRF… no one thought to get these kids a grief counselor? It’s neglect, plain and simple.

Yeah he literally says everyone just like, went back to normal. It’s so fucked up. And that Charles specifically told him and Will not to talk about Diana to the media at all because it would look bad for him.

Major trigger warnings—Harry goes into a lot more detail about his military kills than I was ready for.

Major trigger warnings—Harry goes into a lot more detail about his military kills than I was ready for. Yeah I really hated that. I know that the military was a huge part of his life and he was killing Taliban members but Jesus dude. There was so so much detail to that aspect and I hadn't expected that. I'm sure he isn't expecting a lot of backlash for that part since it's due to a war 'we' started and yeah that's 'part of the job'. But I found it really tasteless to say the least. And the part about not seeing them as people but chess pieces was terrible. Oof. I read the whole book today. Mostly my own version of speed reading which involves some skimming.

I teared up several times when he talked about his mother's death. I 100% believe that there was no counseling for them after their mother's death. Possibly because they were 'older'? I don't know. But damn that's so sad. I wonder if especially Willy would have turned out different had they gotten some help as teens.

All in all I thought it was decently written. I imagine that Willy and Pa are incensed with rage atm though. Especially Willy.

And I expect there will be a statement issued at some point soon about the glorifying of the time of active duty. He could have addressed his time and those conflicts in a different way. He was awfully gung ho about wanting to be in the fighting.

He was awfully gung ho about wanting to be in the fighting. I think part of his point that he talks in sort of a cryptic way (at least so far, I am not done yet), about is that he was that way and had those feelings about the job because of how absolutely fucked up he was from his childhood trauma of losing his mother and then having basically no one parent him after that? Charles was practically worthless and he had more nice things to say about his nannies than his grandma.

I haven’t read it, and I don’t have anyone very close in my life anymore that has been active duty / in active warfare that I could have a convo about this with… so anyone in active military life can certainly tell me nope that’s not it…. But I wonder if his comments of the killings and referring to them as chess pieces is more of a way to cope and separate the human from the killing? Like, (and idk if I am explaining this in a way that makes sense outside my head) I imagine - for me- the idea of going to war and knowing you actually killed real human people can be traumatic and I think a lot of things people are and do in war leads to PTSD and having a lot of trauma, right? So maybe finding a way to compartmentalize the human you killed and viewing them as a “chess piece” or a target like it’s a damn video game is a way to cope with the evils of war killing.
Again, I haven’t read so maybe whatever he says shows this is clearly not a possible mindset, or veterans can say no that’s not how we experience/view it, but…. Idk. Just a thought?
*watch I read it and I’m gonna be like LOLNO TO ME.

Harry telling about his experiences in Afghanistan is a choice he made to hold space for others to tell their stories without shame in an attempt to reduce suicide.
