I just finished watching The Nutcracker with the kids. They came and went but they watched more of it than I was expecting. It was a tradition for me to watch it with my mom every year growing up, so hoping it will become a tradition with us too =)

We went to a kid-friendly Nutcracker this past week, and it was beautiful! The Jan Brett or Susan Jeffers picture books are great too.

How I had to explain "sexy" for M last night. To counter her youtube search of "sexy dancing"
Thank you parental controls.

I know it's kind of controversial, but I love the 1993 version with Macauley Culkin. It was the one my mom and I always watched =) They do a production of the Nutcracker in the city every year, and I'm hoping in the future that maybe the kids will be interested in going with me. I've never been and I keep saying every year I want to go lol. Kind of off topic, but when I was in high school my parents took us to the theatre every Christmas and I loved it. I miss that there's not really a theatre scene here.

mapleme , I do not envy that aspect of your job. +1 Update: Today did not go well. They felt entirely justified and said that they yelled at me to teach me a lesson and show me how it felt to be told that I'm wrong (I have never, and will never yell at an employee). So, yeah, it's been a fun ride. I'm just glad that it came before bonus time.

Yikes mapleme , are they no longer employed? Most definitely. I can put up with *a lot* from employees, so everyone was abuzz on Monday with the news. Usually I give people a lot of chances of redemption (too many, some employees have told me) so that it's not just one bad day that can lose them their job. But this person had zero interest in redemption. They felt like they were entirely justified. Which, dang.

It’s always lovely when the school nurse needs to send a reminder not to send sick kids to school.
I get you can’t miss work, but stop sending your contagious kid to school to spread it to other families.

I work Monday, then I’m off the rest of the week.
F said she had a headache at drop off. So cross your fingers it was just her trying to stay home.

I get you can’t miss work, but stop sending your contagious kid to school to spread it to other families. But I don't think you DO get that people can't miss work. I am incredibly lucky as a single parent to have a super flexible job where I can keep my sick kids home. If I didn't have that and I had to make the choice between being able to feed my kids and pay the rent by keeping my job or keeping them home and losing my job I'd have to make the hard choice to send them to school. Not everyone has a support system of spouses, family, friends, etc. who can or WILL stay with sick kids so the parent can go to work.

Not everyone has a support system of spouses, family, friends, etc. who can or WILL stay with sick kids so the parent can go to work. We had a single mom working here, who, when she started here had a pretty robust support system (both her mom and her sister could watch her kid on days off), but lost it pretty suddenly when family moved away and got jobs. Suddenly she blew through all of her PTO (we offer more PTO than most companies in our field/of our size) and while I let her take whatever days she needed off, I couldn't afford to pay her for days missed after her PTO ran out. I don't know for sure that she was sending her kid to school sick, but I can reasonable assume that she was making those decisions based on needing the income. She eventually left for a work from home job. It was an option that made sense for her, but it's not an option that everyone has. The lack of a social safety net in this country puts everyone in danger. This country is really good at not doing enough to meet the needs of its general population and getting us all to point fingers at each other when there aren't enough resources to go around.

Agreed. We (as a country) need to help provide resources for families that are in need. And make them accessible.
Forcing kids to go to school sick should not be a parents only option.

Cold season can suck it this year. That being said, I just found out that BOTH my kids weigh enough to take REGULAR ibuprofen pills. Even petite little A (55lbs at 8.5yrs old) can take one 200mg pill. R can take two. This is a milestone I didn't realize was going to be amazing. No more hunting down Children's Motrin at the stores!

Anyone else's kid get into mischief/trouble when they're bored? Strategies to navigate? A is 8.5... and when she's bored, she acts mischievously and it's frustrating, and at times, embarrassing. Examples include: messing with the cones at soccer practice (even when in the coach's hands), interrupting adult conversations and pestering, using an iPad as a kickboard at swimming 😳🫣 (this was her worst offense)... R was NEVER like this. What the heck are we doing wrong with this kid? She's very smart, very capable, and we often get compliments on her politeness from other adults, so I'm not sure where the disconnect is. I'm assuming it's symptoms of natural impulsivity and not feeling in control at times, but how do we navigate this?? I'm about to lose my mind with her 😩

Hopefully the natural consequence of it no longer working had an impact on her? No real advice - but curious what she says when you ask her and if she'd have other ideas to keep occupied when not in the moment.

She got really lucky that it dried out and worked again because she was doing chores to earn replacement $$. It was the swim school's ipad (with no water proof case...). She did have to buck up and apologize in person to the swim school mgr, which was a whole thing for her introverted and embarrassed self. Her soccer coach is also a 3rd grade teacher and when S talked to him about her behavior, he was very nonchalant and was like "she's just bored" and thought it wasn't a big deal

I'm turning this into fresh, COLD randoms with my weather forecast. It's currently -8°F (feels like -23°) and we have a high temp of 3° tomorrow. Plus snow 🌨️ . And it was 50°F today. That's an insane fluctuation. Kids are having an online learning day tomorrow as school buildings will be closed. 🥶🥶🥶

She's like yea, thats what first graders do. M certainly never did, but that's not surprising.

I know it's not even the new year yet, and it's like super cold, but the other day I ordered some seeds (jalapeno and banana pepper, the only 2 I needed) and they came in the mail today and I'm super excited for growing season to start LOL

Ugh, power is off at home and DH is home with the girls. We have power at work, but I feel like everyone will be cranky when I get home. And then it's getting super cold overnight and into tomorrow. I really hope that our power comes back on soon.

squeak, how are you feeling? We are visiting our parents in Southern California for the week. I got to see some college friends yesterday for an amazing kid-free time. I hadn't seen one of them in 3 years! That'll definitely be the highlight of my trip!

And the cultured strep test came back negative. So this very painful sore throat is likely related to Covid. That's so rough. I hope you start feeling better soon.

Waiting on 4 to sign off of work. I finished my self evaluation. Now I’m review process documentation for my new job. This is by far the most complex job I’ve held. So I’m taking the time to make my own documentation to make sure I throughly understand everything I’m for maintaining.
No one is even online now.
