Tried to put an offer on a 500k home. Someone came in with cash.
We can’t win today.
For the record we are pre approved and have a chunk to put down.

Thanks Still questionable whether they will use us to bump the cash offer. But at least they wanted us to submit it. I can’t believe anyone would want this house as a rental, it’s a big family home that would be a specific market to rent. And it’s in a nice school district, but not the best in the area. Someone must have deep pockets.

sarenu, that's a bummer, but I hope you find something soon. Me to. I’m more sad about having to search again. But we switched to a different realtor and he seems to be searching for home the we actually like and fit all our requirements. We did have a second property we considered. But it didn’t have an owners suite and it would have been back to sharing 1 bathroom with the kids. So we passed.

Congrats Sarenu!
The previous house - no inspection? I know that’s common in some markets right now but it is so impossible to me.

WTF is wrong with people? We got a call from our school district that there was a hoax school shooter situation at our high school. Apparently someone called multiple high schools all over the state to say that there were shots fired in the school. The schools all had to go into lockdown while officials checked and cleared each school. I don't know how extensive "lockdown" was (if the kids were just kept in their classrooms or if they were sent into closets, etc). But the followup call that (confirming the hoax) we got said that kids were being released early and that there were therapists onsite with the kids. So I'm guessing they went into full lockdown. WTAF.

Holy shit. I got more details on the hoax. "The caller told the dispatcher that there was an active shooter at [High School] wearing a blue shirt, that shots had been fired in room 35, there were casualties, and that people were currently wrestling with the shooter to get the gun."
WTAF.
On the amazing side, the police were inside the school within 4 minutes of the call. Within 7 minutes of the call they had determined that it was likely a hoax (because of other schools being called at the same time). And the autodial call to families came in 20 minutes after the call. I really love our school and community.
WHAT IS WRONG WITH SOME PEOPLE?!?!
ETA: 21 schools in Vermont received similar calls today.

Anyone else signing up for summer camps now? Ooof, childcare was minimal here before covid, but it has gotten so bad. There is only one summer camp that I can find that has hours that could possibly work for a working parent. It's 7:45-4:45. It's not a great summer camp. The next best is 8-4, but most are some version of 9-3:30. WHY??? I mean I know why. That's a very convenient schedule from a staffing perspective and there are not enough summer camps for kids in our part of Vermont, so the camps that exist can do whatever they want. But OMG. Our pre-covid daycare operated 7-5:30 and now operates 8-3:30 with no plans to ever change that. And they may actually now be the ONLY infant center in our town (with a waitlist of over 100 babies).
Our legislature is talking about ways to fix this problem, but one of the "solutions" is to offer "full day" pre-K through the public schools. But to pay for it, they would take away the universal preschool subsidy that was put in place 5-ish years ago. But "full day" means school day (which is not a work day) and parents wouldn't be able to use the subsidy at the private preschools they were sending their kids to (preschools who depend on the income from the program). So there would be *fewer* options for parents with fewer hours of coverage. And it's not like the afterschool programs would start taking 4 year olds.
Ugh, sorry. Rant over. We got into our summer camp program. Which opened its registration at 5 am on a Sunday morning and filled in less than 10 minutes. But so many others did not.

mapleme, it's insanity. Summer camps around here open registration in January and book full within MINUTES. I'm holding out for the camp we did last year through the YMCA but it doesn't open registration until March and the building in which they held camp last year is no longer usable so it's a risky move for sure. Might not be my best life choice but there's no going back now, everything else is full.

We are currently signed up for a local camp.
Now we need to register in a new town and cancel this one.
E is almost aging out of summer camp, but the new one offers beach volleyball, fishing, kayaking and all kinds of lake activities. They will even take F in their preschool group.
It’s definitely not work hours, but we can pay more for extended care.

Now there is 1 and "extended" takes camp from 9-3:00 to 8-4:30. During the school year my kids get on the bus at 7:30 and I can pick them up from aftercare as late as 6. Even our aftercare's camp only goes to 4:30 during the summer.

Our daycare opens at 7:30 and closes at 5.
I don’t know how families deal with this and I am very thankful our current work schedule is flexible. But this also means some nights (like last night) I work an hour or two after the kids go to bed.

It's also awful from a business perspective (if individual suffering isn't enough to sway the general political perspectives). I've lost two great employees because of lack of childcare. And I'm sure that I've had many never even apply. The reason that Quebec started its subsidized childcare program was to encourage more women into the workforce. The increased tax base more the covered the cost increase.

Send T&P this way please. Monday Pip tested negative (again) for Covid though intermittent sinus issues kept him out of school Monday and Tuesday. Today, Z (lives in same apartment building as my mom just down a floor and in opposite end of building) stopped by my mom’s apartment on his way home from work. He called and asked if I can come over to check on my mom. Something just wasn’t right. I head over there. She’s confused/disoriented, bumping into things and such as that. I decided to take her to my apartment so I can get my husband’s opinion as well as his help should we need it. I text my brother to let him know what’s happening - he recommends testing for Covid. We do and Mom is positive. So Z, Mom and I load up with the idea of going back to Mom’s apartment to quarantine. I decided that with everything going on we need to detour to the ER to have her checked out and to get guidance on treating her covid (she’s a transplant recipient). The check her out and discover that not only does she have Covid but she’s also had a stroke within the last 24 hours. They’re not sure on the when because the CT scan puts the stroke on Wednesday but symptoms of it didn’t appear until lunchtime Thursday. After we left with Mom, dh decides to test him and Pip - both test positive. Z and I tested negative but Z works in a retirement village/nursing facility so he needs to contact work to ask how they want to handle this situation. My daughter’s mental health is shaky currently so this is bad timing for her. I'm glad that you guys checked on your mom and caught the stroke early enough for that medication that greatly increases the odds of a full recovery. Strokes run in my family and that medication is a miracle. I hope that she is better quickly and that you all have an easy time with covid.

Last night was the 1st grade music performance. They sang songs in English, Spanish, and even one in Mandarin. I pulled a mom and teared up. It was really cute. L was very nervous beforehand but ultimately did it and did great!
