I’m so bummed about the cdc abandoning us. Our house has managed to avoid this virus. I still really don’t want us to get it. But it’s time to send my kiddo back to school, and so now I have to wait and see how the school is going to respond. I feel so helpless and defeated. Is it only a matter of time before we all get sick? I know we’ve been fortunate to take a ton of precautions thus far but like, damn. Was it pointless? 😢

A cold (or cold like) virus has slowly been working it's way through our house. Everyone that's been sick has tested negative for covid. We don't even know where we picked this up. DS2 was sick first, then MH, and DD and I had super mild runny noses but now over a week in I feel terrible. Super congested, headache, sore in the area between your mouth and nose, above the throat I guess? But no fever.
DD had open house for school tonight and we wore masks and saw maybe 2 other families with masks. It was like covid isn't and has never been a thing. This is a school of 700+ kids. She's been asking to not mask this year since we're all finally vaxxed and she's freshly boosted. It seems kind of pointless if nobody else does. Her 2 friends that masked all year last year and we did outdoor lunches with every day both just had covid, so their parents feel more comfortable with no mask. There was some pretty bad teasing going on for the few kids that were masking last year too. It just sucks all around. Our county is still red/high risk

You avoided it long enough to get vaccinated and protect your family as best you can. That's worth a lot. And while boosters are helpful. You won't hesitate to get them so you'll still be doing your best.

Thanks so much everyone. Really appreciate you all.
Talking to the kids yesterday, they were telling us about all the teachers who have suddenly gone out sick and "won't be bacl for at least a week." To me, it's pretty clear this is just ripping thru the school. Nobody gets notified anymore. Probably one of my kids is asymptomatic. It doesn't really matter since we are all in iso together.
Really every family for themselves here where we live. The MAGA school board really fucked us.

That's some bullshit. All I know is my company better not ever tell us we aren't allowed to wear masks anymore. I will raise hell. I plan to keep wearing one at least through flu season so through early 2023.

This is a really interesting thread on what the CDC has done. I think reducing or eliminating quarantine just for exposure is probably a good step; I'm in favor of common sense measures that reduce the amount of school kids are missing. I don't understand some of these other changes.

I really didn't think we would be where we are today when my kid starts kindergarten. He wasn't even 3 when this all started.

My daughters were 3 and almost 5 and have very little to no memory of before. I talk to them about it like it was the olden days. Back when you were in 3 year old prek you never had to wear masks. Mom never wore a mask as a kid, isn’t that crazy?

Speaking of boosters - what would you guys do? Son had Covid at the end of May. Daughter took a combined flu/Covid test at the end of June when sick and came back positive for the flu although our discharge paperwork said positive for both? Would you boost now or wait for the potential updated booster possibly coming next month?

It still seems up in the air if they'll have an updated booster for kids so I'm taking advantage of what we have available to us now

My coworker was super cautious this whole time and has two kids under five. They finally took a vacation and she called me yesterday because the day before they were set to fly home they all tested positive for Covid. Her little ones are pretty sick and she just sounded so overwhelmed and tired. I feel awful for her.

We are leaving for our first vacation since pandemic and what are the chances that one or more of us don't come back with COVID? 😭😭😭 But I figure, my 5YO either gets it now, or he gets it when he starts school in 3 weeks. 😭😭😭😭😭

Luckily we still have Covid time off until September because she is pretty new and doesn’t have PTO to burn. I mean, I have taken several vacations and not gotten it but I just always go into each situation assuming I will. I’ll cross my fingers for you.

We're only going for 4 days and there are no testing requirements to return so hopefully we'll be okay at least during the trip. After getting COVID from doing nothing, part of me feels like we'll probably get it at some point anyway, we might as well do something fun at least. 🥺

I'm going to try sending the kids to school with masks for at least the first couple of weeks. I'm so worried about DD1 keeping it on. They got boosted before we went on our vacation in June. This is all such a crap shoot. Fingers crossed that no one gets it before my birthday/anniversary in a couple of weeks. H and I have rented a fancy hotel room for a night to get away and celebrate, and I do not want to have to cancel.

Our household got Covid last week starting with me testing positive and then followed by DS2 (4) then DS1 (7) and finally MH. MH is a teacher and tested positive the afternoon of the first day of school. He had been testing since it was in our household but was negative until then. DS1 missed the first week of school and he was so disappointed. MH missed most of the first week and was not so disappointed. I was the most sick with flu-like symptoms for about 3 days. My boys basically just had runny noses and felt fine. MH was given paxlovid and felt bad for about a day.
We’ve been very Covid conscience. We’re all vaccinated as much as we can be and we wear masks in public. I don’t know where we got it as no one else around us has it. Just thought I would share our experience!

N has had some nasal congestion and a minor cough all week, no fever. I've been testing him daily and nothing, and yesterday I started feeling crappy. Thus far my tests are also negative. So maybe it's just a summer cold? *crosses fingers*
I mean, N just had it in June so unlikely he has it (unless he didn't catch this variant).

starbuck my dad has been having heart rate escalation stuff, and his doctor has given him vagus nerve things to do to calm it - one is sticking your face in a bowl of ice water, but there are several other things like breathing through a straw, that might help calm your heart rate down. He was given many drugs to help fix it before they gave him this common sense solution, so I thought I would pass it on incase your doctors haven't mentioned. Also, sorry about Covid.

Well fuck starbuck that sucks. I hope your heart chills back to baseline soon and covid symptoms stay minimal for you. My SOB and post cv cough are off the charts this week, particularly today. Of course I just had an appt with my pcp and I was feeling better so we were all like YAY. now I can’t go up or down the stairs without huffing and puffing and being totally winded. She said to let her know in 2 weeks bc then she’ll refer me to a pulmonologist and get an echo of my heart just to make sure covid didn’t fuck anything more up. sifl it is not pointless. Getting covid now, post vaccines and boosters will make a big difference even if dying wasn’t the highest risk before for you personally, I think it’s *usually* more manageable now. Plus the paxlovid or monoclonial antibodies help.
