You were just gifted $3000 and are required to take a trip with your SO. (childcare at home included - so no kids)
Where are you going?

Italy. Actually wait, $3000 doesn't cover a trip to Italy.
Maybe L.A. to visit friends.

Renting a house in a tropical location. Close to the beach with a private pool.

Newfoundland or Cape Breton, where we'd rent a little house and go for lots of walks and meander around small villages eating seafood.

My sister and I are heading to Puerto Rico in October (fun fact: this will be her 30th country before she turns 30 later that month) and it is easily under that amount for both of us. Obviously, haven't been there yet, but I've heard amazing things.

First of all, I hope this is really happening in your life.
For that amount of $, my answer would be either Chicago or Napa Valley. Simply because those are next up on our long weekend trip list.

I was having trouble with this so I ran it by J. He had the idea of NYC or Montreal, both of which I like.

There's this resort in Bali that has amazing villas with private pools and a car that takes you to the local restaurants... if you get sick of room service, that is.
I'd like to hide out there for a while.

Probably Maine, where we honeymooned. Or London, if we could keep it under budget.

A long vacation in the NE US. For sure back to Newport RI, which we love. A few days in VT to get syrup, cheese and hot sauce. Maybe some time in Boston since we've never been.

Oh. No this is not real life. I just didn't want it to be like dream vacation. Practicalish vacation.

See. We could make it happen but I have a severe panic attack just thinking about getting on a plane without our kids. And visiting the maritime northeast seems pretty boring....

Okay, also. I feel like I could totally save 3,000 over a span of several years. And I could cobble together childcare - probably not for more than a weekend, but at least a weekend.
I should, like, do this.
Some day, A and I both really want to go to northern Canada to see the northern lights and be very cold. Nunavut. Or Iceland. Or Greenland. Somewhere up there. But that'll probably be when the kids are, like, much older and more independent.
Short term, A and I want to go back to Acadia (in Maine), where we went three months before H was born. It would be great to go alone. It might be fun to go with kids. So we shall see.

I would go to Nova Scotia with A in a heartbeat, (and Cape Breton, where his family is from), except he honeymooned there with his ex-wife. So... maybe just a bit more time needs to pass.

Basically as soon as we think that the kids could handle the 6 hour drive and we can afford a week+ vacation we are totally going to Bar Harbor with the kids. We would like it to be our go-to, perhaps annual, vacation spot. I'm pretty darn excited that C seems to be a little bit more adventurous than M, so we don't have to wait as long for her to say, be willing to go into water cooler than bath temperature.

When A and I went, we were gifted a week at a time-share condo in Ellsworth (by a friend who mis-timed their share and couldn't go) and it was basically perfect. And huge - would've been great with kids. I'm friends with a goat farmer in the area and she's offered her land for camping. GAH LET'S ALL GO AT ONCE!

The maritime northeast is NOT boring. Have you been there? I believe I live and work here. Ok live may be a stretch. Have spent much time in coastal towns of New England. Thought Nova Scotia was meh. Got very seasick on ferry over. Love them. But maybe I'm dreaming too big on this occasion.

Well that's horrifying, especially from a person who professes to love the ocean. We must cease this conversation.

DH is pretty anti camping, so we would need to do a house. But a huge house would be amazing. We stayed in a tiny VRBO place that was wonderful but doesn't allow kids, so we'll need a new place.
