MIL made it home today. She fucking hauled and drove from Pella, Iowa to CNY in two days. She usually dawdles when she travels alone. She had FIL buy kn95 masks and put an air filter in her room. They actually sleep in separate rooms which is working in their favor right now. Whenever she comes out they both mask up, but she's only coming out to use the hall bathroom. Otherwise he's dropping food outside her door and she's staying very put until Sunday when she'll be a week post symptoms, but will continue to mask. Fingers crossed FIL avoids it. I offered to GrubHub her something but she declined. I feel so bad. They made it SO long.

We’re off to the pediatrician this afternoon for the 14YO, who just can’t shake the post Covid cough/congestion and who woke up with bilateral ear pain. He’s so frustrated he just can’t ‘get over it’. Also, I can probably stop rapid testing myself now right? I have been negative on near daily tests since the 14YO tested positive. The 11YO tested positive a week ago today and cleared his rapid with a negative yesterday. Stupid anxiety. Stupid 8 test per family per month rule. Amazon had the ihealth tests on lightening deal today. Such a hilariously depressing thing.

They stayed away from the crowds so I'm hoping no one catches it. I hope your FIL manages to not get it. I can't imagine driving that far feeling like crap.

No, she went to her 50th high school reunion. The awful irony is that her 50th was actually in 2020 but cancelled due to covid. This was their rescheduled event and it turned into a super spreader event where everyone involved is 70+ years old.

And people wonder why I wear n95 mask everywhere We’re in upstate NY visiting my parents. DD and I went to get haircuts yesterday. We were the only ones masking at the hair salon, the grocery store, and Target. I keep wondering how much of it is that people don’t know that BA.5 is surging so badly or that they just don’t care. I think a lot of people truly don’t realize how bad transmission is right now because they’ve stopped paying any attention to COVID news. I just can’t imagine inviting COVID into my home willingly, knowing how contagious and widespread BA.5 is right now.

Minerva, I gave away tickets to a sold out show at Wolf Trap this weekend. We bought them 2.5 years ago and I hate to miss it but also the thought of that crowd gives me hives.

I do think a lot of people just aren't paying attention anymore, they want it to be over. Sticking their heads in the sand. I mean, I do, too, try telling myself that at this point, it is much more like a bad cold (in my family's experience, but I am not discounting how bad it actually can be), but then I realize I am 9 months out from my booster, and I slap on my n95 everywhere. At least my four year old is actually on her way to being fully vaccinated this time.

If I didn't follow epidemiologists on twitter, I'd probably have no idea what was going on.

That said, the news has basically stopped talking about covid unless there's anything breaking about it. Updates on spread or cases is completely off air and you need to go seek that out on your own. I would absolutely think most people don't know, and don't want to know now that it's so much less in their faces.

I also don't think the info is as easy to find as it was before. True. The transmission info has been harder to find ever since they changed the CDC maps to reflect hospitalization rates instead.

I desperately need a hair cut but I don't know if there any salons masking anymore.
My 5YO is now fully vaccinated and asked to get a haircut at a salon. Thankfully, the stylists at the kid salon are still masking (masking is optional for kids). I'm thinking about taking my 1YO for his first real haircut once he is fully vaccinated.

The FDA gave EUA to novavax as a primary vaccine series yesterday. The CDC still has to approve, but I really hope this becomes available soon. I'd really like to have this as a booster option. I haven't had a vaccine since last April (though did have covid in December 2021).

My ILs really want to book a Disney trip for next February and I still feel so worried about COVID. People have been to Disney successfully, right? Flying with no mask mandate?? With a newly-masking 2YO??

DD, my mom, and I all wore our N95s and crossed our fingers. DD’s hair had gotten so long and tangly from split ends, plus she had cut herself a few bangs last month that needed to be evened out. 🤣 Mine was just long and heavy. It feels so nice to have short, bouncy hair again!

I went for a walk this morning and my neighbor didn't even recognize me. Ha. Feeling fancy.

Mine is really getting out of control and also still shedding a ton and I'd rather have shorter/less hair to pick up off of everything. Maybe I can ask the (masked) kid stylist for a cut. I'll sit in the taxi cab.

With a newly-masking 2YO?? So… there are reasons for the decisions made but I guarantee we were masking/distancing as much as possible. We’ve gone in 2020 and twice in 2021 and did not get Covid. We went again this year. We didn’t get Covid but somehow my daughter got the flu (and she was masking with n94 but kids are kids). My BIL and family were there about the same time as us and they did get Covid, but they were not wearing masks either. I will say there are a ton of people coughing and no sense of space but February is a long way off and who knows what Covid will be like by then.

With a newly-masking 2YO?? We made it through Disney without getting sick, but we definitely took more risks during the trip than we do in our normal day-to-day. We ate indoors multiple times because the kids were overheating or there was no outdoor seating. We let the kids sip water and suck on candies for their ears on the plane. We wore our masks on lanyards so that we could easily pop them on for indoor rides and bus transportation, but a lot of the lines move through indoor and outdoor spaces and it was hard to enforce mask wearing in those situations. Supposedly, WDW has upgraded their ventilation in indoor spaces, but it’s hard to know how much and how much it really helps when it’s crowded. Basically, you can mitigate the risk for your family by masking and eating outdoors, but it feels impossible to take all of the precautions you can at home. And the other people around you definitely won’t be. That said, we were able to relax enough to have a great vacation because we were all vaccinated.

The dining situation would probably be easier to navigate in February than in May because the weather will be nicer. It was mid-90s while we were there and both of my kids are pretty sensitive to heat. February is 70s and 80s, so much nicer for patio dining.

With lack of updates being televised or posted widely online the lack of knowledge of the current state of things is… I’ve been waiting for the local health dept to announce clinics for kids. They never announced it, I called them and they’re like oh yeah we are doing them by appt. We just didn’t feel like there’d be a big draw so no need to publicize. 🤔 I mean maybe publicize so we know??? Lol

Disney has seating outside for lots of the counter service (think fast food) options. But, if you want actual service, those are almost none (there are a couple, but not many).
We are actually headed to Universal in a week. We just got over COVID, so that is why we booked. But, I don't know what variant we had, so our plan is to mask almost all the time. We will still eat inside.

Ah okay, so there are ample outdoor dining options available? I don't know when I'll ever feel comfortable eating indoors again. There are at least one or two Quick Service dining options with outdoor seating at all of the parks. Some of the restaurants that require reservations also have patio seating, but it is more limited and not guaranteed (this was where we ran into the most trouble). Some of the outdoor dining areas are under pavilions with protection from rain and sun, but a lot of them are just tables with umbrellas. Some of the patios get closed when it is too hot or when it rains. It was generally just harder to do outdoor dining than I had expected during our visit. We went in planning to eat two meals indoors at specialty restaurants without patios during our visit, and found ourselves eating indoors much more often than that.

With a newly-masking 2YO?? We have our first ever trip planned for this November. I feel nervous too and we've been super cautious this whole time, but I really want the kids to go while they are still prime age (closer to 7.5 and 4.5 by then). We are close enough to drive though. We are staying in a suite at Art of Animation, so we will have access to a fridge and microwave. My kids are annoying eaters anyways, so this just helps us feed them easier. My plan is to either eat outside or bring it back to our room.
