cnf I can’t believe that little guy is so big! I still see him as a baby even though he’s only like 8 months behind my twins lol. Adorable! He's still just called "The Baby" in our house. He'll be 2 next month, lol. The twins are 4.5 and still get called the babies 🫣 They’ll probably be talking about it in therapy some day 😂

Round 2 is working it’s way through my house. At this point it feels like resistance is just futile and it would be better to get through this variant and all have the same general baseline of immunity?

trueblue, that's essentially where I am right now too. I don't think there's anything - minus locking down our own household- that we can do to avoid this. We will still mask in a crowd and constant hand hygiene is just part of life for all of us now. I'm also still testing us for symptoms. Unless we pack up and move, here we are. I may die mad that we gave up SO MUCH for things to wind up like this.

trueblue, oh no! Didn't you guys have it not too long ago? Not really? H & the 14yo went down with OG Covid over Christmas 2020/New Years 2021. Me and the 11YO fell victim to delta September 2021. I don’t know where that falls on the Covid infection frequency scale Eta: the 14YO was patient zero this time and tested positive when he returned from a week a sleep away camp last Friday. The good news is his rapid test was fully negative this morning after a squinter positive yesterday so at least I have comfort knowing his immune system is doing it’s job quite efficiently.

Do you have a co2 sensor? I think they are so helpful for deciding whether a situation is ok or not. With very good masks that fit you well and that you carefully check the fit of and don't remove at all, and with a co2 level that you hold in your head as a cutoff (that is, you're ready to leave in the middle of the movie just like you would if a fire alarm went off) this would be fairly safe. I wouldn't do it because I'd rather watch a movie at home than in a theater even without a pandemic but I know some people are really missing going to the movies. Thanks for this. We decided to just pass for now. We’ve all gone to the movies in the past month so we aren’t dying that bad. DS was able to go for a birthday party where the only people in the theater were people we knew so that was good. I went when it was a pretty packed theater and just kept my mask on when I was not eating. We can wait until things settle again. Apparently the Bay Area is the worst in the whole state right now. Weeeeee! Several Bay Area counties are among the top few, but you’re in Marin, right? Marin has fallen pretty substantially: experience.arcgis.com/experience/c635eb96e3d24521b9a0417cd0595773/page/Cases/I think that will take you to my county’s page but that just impacts what’s highlighted, should still show you all the data. Of course, those numbers are dramatically impacted by testing rates, but I wouldn’t think testing in Marin would be systematically worse than in SF or San Mateo, especially since your positivity rate is the same or better than theirs. So fingers crossed things are only semi-awful by you, instead of totally awful?

Did they stop offering the vaccine for free regardless of health insurance? I just looked at a health department clinic 2 counties over since we are still wait listed and the note on it says they take cash check and some insurance. And that if you don’t have insurance to call them for assistance.

My 5YO corrects anyone that calls the 1YO a baby that he’s now a toddler. I have a friend with a 2 year old daughter named Allie. We had a conversation with DD that she couldn’t call her Baby Allie anymore because she was now a speaking toddler and will get upset. So now DD talks about going to see Toddler Allie all the time, which sounds way too much like Toddler Alley, which my H decided sounded like an absolutely terrifying place where toddlers lurk in dark corners, ready to jump all over you. ETA: Toddler Allie got her first COVID shot last week. 😁

My newest coworker has Covid for the second time in not even five months 😬 She is so surprised to have it. She actually said "I guess it's going around again". This is why I'll be wearing a mask at work for fucking ever.

So fingers crossed things are only semi-awful by you, instead of totally awful? I’m in SM county. It’s pretty bad here. Especially in my particular city. It seems like everyone I know who didn’t have it in the dec/Jan surge has gotten it since May. The only silver lining is I know a lot of people where only 1-2 people in the household got it and it didn’t spread.

Me and one other coworker used rapids this afternoon, both negative. I don't know if the other person will test. I hope so since she also doesn't ever mask.

I really hate that everyone everywhere* has given up basic precautions. We're all in for a world of hurt. And it's making me even more anxious about our cross country move at the end of the month.
*obviously not everyone but it seems like a decent majority

I've been toying with going past 4 weeks for DS2's 2nd dose, but I also just want him to be fully vaxxed already. If I push it back it won't be past 6 weeks because I want him to be fully vaxxed before preschool starts.
Also in terms of insurance, there's really no reason insurance companies shouldn't pay for the vax going forward and federal funding being available for those without. The vaccine should be pretty cheap for them with negotiating AND it saves them $$ because better outcomes. Plus health care is like, what we pay them for! I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir here though.

YLE has two posts out this week. Things I didn't know- there is an emerging (likely to be named VOC) new strain in India- BA.2.75. Seems to be outcompeting BA.5 there. Also, while BA.5 is now dominant, it is still a bit of a wild card if a meaningful new wave will occur in the US because a lot of the world did not experience the BA.2.12.1 wave we've just gone through. Says we'll find out soon! Holding steady at an estimated 1M new cases per day (was 3.9M at height of the first omicron wave), but test positivity rates are increasing. yourlocalepidemiologist.substack.com/p/covid-state-of-affairs-july-7And this one is about the epidemiology of reinfections. yourlocalepidemiologist.substack.com/p/epidemiology-of-reinfections

The 14YO now has double pink eye, likely Covid related (even though he cleared a rapid with no line yesterday). The virtual doc was very clear that pink eye is extremely contagious (no ducking shit, this ain’t my first rodeo) but I forgot to ask him if that meant contagious for pink eye or contagious for Covid, or both. It’s really an educational question since the 11YO is positive now and I feel like the odds are not in my favor.

Sending love to all the recent positives. I hope everyone feels better asap!
Super excited that school starts back for us 3 weeks from today and this variant is raging.
