San Diego unified is requiring masks again, effective today. I saw that, good for them. I hope other districts follow suit. I know ours won’t! 😭

DD (going into 2nd), myself, and MH will all be masking for the foreseeable future as we are in schools. In the past, we've done Happy Masks and Enros. I really liked the Enros, but I'm not sure I trust them against this latest variant.
What are KN95s like? We had the Enro Curv last year so that they didn't sit so close to our mouths, which is critical since we talk to peoole all day. Do KN95s sit away from your mouth? Are they hotter than other masks? I've seen ones that have adjustable ear loops plus we have some ear saver straps and I'll order more as needed.
I don't want to order a package and then not be able to tolerate wearing them, especially for DD.

They mess with them so much that I switched them back to Happy Masks. I figured that a well-fitting mask that they don't futz around with is better than a higher filtration that they are forever pulling on and off. My DH is a teacher/administrator and wears one all day long at school, but he really does not enjoy it, lol. But as an adult, he sucks it up (and sometimes stands out in the parking lot for 5-10 minutes for a mask break).

My kid likes this KF94, which fits similarly to Happy Masks: behealthyusa.net/products/blue-kf94-2d-mask-black-small-kids-size?variant=40843523621028I prefer them over others as well, although, for my kid it's mostly the feel of the interior that matters to him. Behealthusa.com lets you mix different masks into a bundle so you can try them out before committing to a large pack. Also, I bought a bunch of ear loop adjusters on Etsy so I can add them to masks and they work well.

DH likes these kind over the flat fold kind: This is the style my H and kids prefer. I buy KF94s for them. I like KzN95s more for myself because they play better with my glasses.

One thing to keep in mind about the BA.5 variant and outdoor transmission is that the physical properties of the virus haven’t changed. It can’t travel any farther as an aerosol or droplet than it used to be able to. High quality masks still block the vast majority of virus particles from entering your respiratory system - the virus does not move any more easily through them. The two things that have changed since OG COVID are 1) it takes a smaller amount of virus to get infected because it is more efficient at entering cells and reproducing and 2) the virus has become increasingly more evasive to the front lines of our immune system. The main driver of the BA.5 variant’s spread has been immune evasion - because vaccination and previous infection are less protective, there are a lot more susceptible people to fuel the exponential spread of the virus.
Ventilation and masks are still the most effective ways to prevent transmission. Outdoor transmission is still going to be far more rare than indoor transmission - aerosols won’t accumulate outside with the exception of extreme crowds, but droplet transmission could happen more easily since it takes fewer virus particles to get an active infection. KN95s or other high quality masks and moving socialization outdoors if possible are still going to be the easiest ways to protect yourself without making too much of an impact on day-to-day life.

I'd be pretty upset if those were my kids. Same. A lot of people around me are following the 5 day rule and it’s upsetting to me. It’s been taking people I know a lot longer to clear a rapid test. I think people should stay home until they are negative.

My dad tested negative today, so 7? Days out from initial test last Tuesday and 9ish from symptoms starting. My mom hasn't tested again yet but is doing one later today. I told them they need to test again Saturday morning before we would come over.

And then meanwhile, the grad party I went to where my aunt tested positive the very next morning, literally no one else tested positive and she was around at least 20 other people indoors that day. Just wild.

But the 5 day rule is with a negative test….. Is it? I thought it was 5 days with a mask. I think you're right. There's so much conflicting info. Pretty sure it was 5 days full isolation, then you could go back to work/school with masking for 5 more days, but you should still limit other places/contact with people. Of course, most people take it as, 5 days and we're good to go. Which is why they never should have changed it in the first place.

But the 5 day rule is with a negative test….. Is it? I thought it was 5 days with a mask. That is what the CDC says. Nowhere does it say negative test. It says 5 days if symptoms are gone/going away, and then mask for an additional 5 days. But that would mean I'm "safe" on day 11 and I'm still not.

ldubhawksfan, I think the state of CA does require a negative test to exit after 5 days. The CDC, however, does not. Not that any of that matters here because Texas nocurr... This is THREE school years in a row that chaos has ensued right as school starts.

It’s 5 days then mask. I know I’ll get pushback on this but I never tested us after the positives in our house. I look at it the same I guess as other viruses that you could still positive for some time (ala the flu)

DS1 just tested negative, praise be! He hasn't been able to go to his dad's house this whole time, his dad is a carpenter and if he gets sick he doesn't get paid, so we've been really cautious. I'm pleased for them to be able to be together again.

Yeah for our school (in state of CA): Isolation can end after Day 5 if symptoms are not present or are resolving and a diagnostic specimen* collected on Day 5 or later tests negative.

We are heading to the beach for a week. I just added Covid tests to my packing list. But I just got 3 boxes from the library so I’ll just bring them
