TIL Also thanks for that entire thread jaygee I’ve spent most of the day trying to figure out why I was having such a huge reaction (like wanting to just flee) and this explained it perfectly.

My son has a teacher who is from Ukraine. He is my son’s learning support coach and there are only five 12/13 yo boys in my son’s class. Yesterday, instead of class, Mr. Rafa sat the boys down and told them he would be leaving tomorrow for Poland. He was not in school today so that he can get things organized here before his flight tomorrow. (We live in Seoul so it is already after school on Friday) He’s going to attempt to drive from Poland back to Ukraine to help his mom and sister get out. He told the boys how proud he is of their hard work this year and wished them all well in case he is not able to make it back before the end of the school year. The boys were asking him a lot of questions and it came out that he actually intends to stay and fight. My son texted me a picture from learning support today. The principal was filling in as a sub and he allowed the boys to make posters instead of the planned lesson. The boys are planning to stand in front of the Russian embassy and hold up their signs on Saturday.

I ordered some crocheted tumble leaf characters from a Ukrainian woman on Etsy, twice actually. She was very lovely with both interactions. Like, you could feel her kindness through the computer screen and she always goes above and beyond. So much so that I immediately reached out to see if she was safe and she said she is not. She and her family are heading to western Ukraine now. I know my connection to her is silly but I’m so sad and feel helpless. I want to be able to help her family somehow.
I’ve always had a fondness for Ukrainian people. Their resiliency, strength and kindness is admirable. They have a sweet history with Indigenous people here too. The kokum scarves that are part of Indigenous culture came from Ukrainian babushkas!

Can someone explain to me why people (trumpets) are blaming this in Biden and saying this wouldn’t have happened if trump were in office? Is there more to it then the delirium of trumpets?

I feel this in my GenX bones When I started making an emergency kit and trying to find potassium iodide, DH exasperatedly said "this isn't WarGames" and I said "you don't know it's not". For what it's worth, we live right in between two nuclear plants, so those things are in our house anyways.

Those within the 10 mile EPZ are usually given enough for household members, but your general population isn’t going to be able access it easily. Same with prussian blue. That shit is under lock and key. We needed some a few years ago and talk about a logistical nightmare. I did see they are holding the workers hostage. The PPE they wear is only going to hold up so long (think extreme respirators, hazmat suits, etc. that the general army isn’t going to have).

We watched Winter on Fire again last night. Highly recommended it as it highlights the bravery and determination of Ukraine's civilians.
The story about the teacher going to get his family and to fight is incredibly brave.

I'm sure she was surprised and comforted to know people in other parts of the world are thinking of her and her country in their time of need. You're good people.

Trump wanted to withdraw from NATO if he made it to a second term. He wanted to do it before the election but advisors told him it could become an issue in the election.

I am finally caught up, I am having a lot of anxiety about *gestures around wildly*
DD(9) got a book about Chernobyl from the book fair in the fall, we joked about a 3rd grader picking such a heavy thing at the time. Who knew it'd be so relevant now.

The only reason this may not have happened under Trump is because Trump was already doing what Putin wanted - exploring options to weaken NATO and recognizing parts of Ukraine as Russian territory. Putin wants to ensure that Ukraine will never become part of the west the way huge swaths of Eastern Europe have since 1999.
Trump spent years talking about how Putin was his best friend, wondering out loud why Europe was on Ukraine’s side in the civil war, and withholding aid from Ukraine in hopes that they’d provide dirt on his political opponent. What a friend of western democracy...

I read this thread re: Chernobyl, which was re-tweeted by WMD/nuclear/national security people I've been following on Twitter since North Korea stuff. (I also don't feel like Eric Fiegl-Ding could possibly be an expert in everything he weighs in on on Twitter.)

Thank you for posting that, richard. I hesitated posting it from EFD because he tends to be very alarmist in general. I'm relieved there's a logical and rather benign explanation. Although it's concerning how even temporary raised levels may effect those on the ground.

I hope it’s ok if I jump in to ask a silly question. Does anyone have a recommendation for books to learn more about the Cold War? Like a Cold War for Dummies? You guys are awesome and hopefully I can contribute more than a question one day!

I dont have any recommendations though. There are so many (and I havent read any except for something on Cuban Missile Crisis when I was in high school) but that period is a pretty good snapshot of the entire thing.

Ok. ::scratch head:: What could be causing that and how big of a difference is it? Yeah, micro-Sv is short hand for microSieverts, which is 1 microJoule per kg in tissue (so 1 Sv is 1 J/kg; if you take out the tissue portion of that, the term is a Gray (which is also 1 kg/JThey are reporting the wrong units, but whatever. In this case, it’s a 1 to 1 to 1 conversion because we are talking gamma/beta radiation and not alpha. Alpha is only an issue if you inhale and is not represented in these numbers. Also, uranium will kill you from a chemical toxicity standpoint before the radiation even started to affect you. We use rad/rem in the US, which equals 100 Gray/Sieverts. Anyway, these numbers actually don’t mean a thing without context. Overall, they aren’t big until you associate a unit of time with them. 93 uSv by itself isn’t a lot. We’re talking 9.3mrem. For reference, you receive about 600mrem per year naturally Now, when we add in units of time, yeah, it can make a big difference. 65uSv/hr to 93uSv/hr is not much of a difference, but if we’re talking per minute or per second, yeah, it’s a big jump. Based on this, I’m thinking it’s per hour, solely because that is the standard for reporting these types of things As to why? Radiation levels aren’t a flat number. They rise and fall all the time and we just take an average to report levels Tl;dr- these numbers are useless without more context ETa- thinking about it and per hour doesn’t make much sense next to the reactor. I want to know the per what to give a context on just how deadly it is. Even here, rad levels next to a plant are more than that...

You guys are awesome and hopefully I can contribute more than a question one day! The Cold War by John Lewis Gaddis is an approachable read about the “themes” of the Cold War. It’s definitely (pro) US-centric and not a chronology, but it’ll hit the high points. Looking at our bookshelf, H has read a couple Odd Arne Westad books on the topic, but I haven’t personally. Also, I feel like asking for reading recommendations, especially about major world history, is never silly!!

Can someone explain to me why people (trumpets) are blaming this in Biden and saying this wouldn’t have happened if trump were in office? Is there more to it then the delirium of trumpets? The way I'm understanding that POV is that Putin has always wanted to do this and was waiting for weak leadership of the US, and since he views Biden as a weak leader, this was a perfect opportunity for him to go all in. But he's a madman who was going to do it anyways, so I really don't understand the Biden blame either when it would have happened under Trump, too.

I would actually say making Biden LOOK weak is part of the timing bc handing political power to the party that coddles chaos and authoritarianism makes democracy look unreliable or undesirable
