What’re you sad about, today?
What are you happy about?
Are you playing a mental sad ballad, or a mental peppy poppy song?

I’ve been doing some stuff, lately, that I was previously postponing. That’s been putting some pep in my step. Why do I wait to do things?
I have an underlying sadness that I think is just pandemic and winter related.

Yoga is making me happy.
Lack of date nights and time out with my husband. We want to find a new sitter, but it feels so daunting when we try to plan something and it gets cancelled because one kid has a cough. We had 3 dates canceled because someone was sick, or might be sick and it’s just so depressing.

I have been sad bc J and I disagree about an issue M is having and how to deal with it, and it’s been really stressful.
I have been happy about M’s amazing Girl Scout group and all the cool opportunities she’s had.
I have hold music in my head right now (see TIT thread)

So am I the only one with Encanto songs constantly stuck in my head?
I waver between blues and gratitude. By the hour.

I've been sad/stressed about a thing that is somewhat out of my control, but will have a big affect on my life. And while it's still out of my control and I still don't have an answer, I've been feeling less stressed about it, which is nice.
I've recently enjoyed thinking about the differences between my kids and how they interact with school. When M was learning to read she would come home and go into great detail about what they were learning. She would quiz us on our knowledge about digraphs and rule breaker words. With C, I am vaguely aware that she's learning how to read. I see her worksheets from school and occasionally she'll ask me what a word is because she can't figure it out (she likes reading the tissue box in the bathroom). She seems to be doing well and enjoying school, but I hear more about the lives of her classmates. Like she's got one classmate who is visiting family in India right now. And two new classmates that are refugees from Afghanistan. I know her friend's favorite colors. C is so much more socially focused and will probably always have a different motivation to show up to school each day. I like their unique paths.
ETA: I've been listening to a lot of Encanto

My plants are making me happy today, especially the little seedlings that I have sprouting in my kitchen. The fact that I had to get poked once in each arm for bloodwork today is making me sad. I know those are both pretty shallow things, but I'm honestly pretty neutral today.

Sad: lately I feel like I barely have time to breathe… I’m concerned about not being able to slow down and enjoy my kids’ childhood. I don’t want to blink and have it be over 😭.
Happy: we are feeling more financially stable
Music: I have barely been listening to anything! I’ve been listening to the Resolved Mysteries podcast lately though & I love the ladies on there.

Grandkid roundup! We don’t talk about Bruno here. Mostly because it has a good beat and I love the mix up they did with Hamilton. E has had the sound track constantly playing when she is home.

I feel really content with my life right now and I wouldn't change a thing. But I also have deep, persistent melancholia that I can't shake. I'm terrified by how fast time seems to be passing. I feel like no matter how long I live, it'll never be enough. I wish I knew how to put these thoughts out of my mind.
As for music, I still have Green Day on repeat. Christie Road is constantly stuck in my head.

Christie Road is constantly stuck in my head. The school age years are my favorite years of childhood and I often feel like they are going to fly by. When I feel like that I get great peace in pausing and saying, "We are here today and that is enough." That's borrowed from my PGAL phrase "I am pregnant today and that is enough."

My niece may wear one of my prom dresses…
We pulled out dresses from the closet at my moms and she said she really liked it.
And yes I gave my permission. There is no guarantee my girls will fit into it, it will actually be wearable, or they will want to.
I think it’s pretty awesome the dress will be worn again (24 years later 😎)

Sad: seems really inconsequential right now, but we were supposed to be in Japan next week. Scored flights last April for $230/each. Obviously had to cancel since their borders aren’t opened to tourists yet. Someday we will get there!
Happy: really happy with my work right now and having something that I built and control 100% myself. I was worried that bringing on a 2nd client would be too much since I’m already the PTA VP and coaching E&A’s lacrosse team, but so far it feels good and I love having a real (though still kinda small) paycheck!

Sad: My relationship with my parents is so strained and it is really wearing on me. Due to Covid, religion, politics. All the usuals. I'm sad and frustrated.
Happy: A friend and I are coordinating a neighborhood valentine swap and the participation response has been so much higher than I expected. Basically everyone who wants to participate signs up (all ages, we have as young as 2 and as old as 80 so far) and then we randomly assign everyone to make valentine for another neighbor and they will deliver them on Feb 13th. I thought it would be a good way to bridge the generational gap between the kids and the retirees, but parents are participating too and I'm thrilled. Hoping to make this an annual event.
The song in my head is, surprise!, an Encanto song - Surface Pressure. I feel this song so deeply sometimes.

Sad: I am going to miss my SIL's baby shower next month
Happy: We are giving R that beach vacation she wants for her 10th (!) birthday. (Thanks to my parents paying for a beach house for a week). Oceanfront for a week!

Sad: Someone else is doing the daily schedule at work Happy: Someone else is doing the daily schedule at work
Managing the schedule is my favorite thing that I do. But it's also a ton of work and it's the reason that I work almost every night after the kids go to bed. And I'm going away for a week at the end of the month and I need to make sure that everyone knows what they're doing. So I'm training someone else on the schedule. It is a giant flood of emotions that is very non-proportional to the thing.
I guess it's also the one thing in my life that is all mine. I share my home, my workplace, parenting, food, etc. My business is too large to depend on me entirely for any one thing. So it's nice to have something that is just mine. And I'm good at it. Sigh, so is the person that I'm training. It's all fine. Good even.

We mostly cooked while we were there, but we did have lunch at Shaka Taco, which was delicious.

Sad song: Big sad/mad/frustrated/anxious about the bullshit happening in Canada right now. I’m so exhausted about arguing and listening to people excuse inexcusable behaviour.
Happy song: A hot shower for now, a hair cut tomorrow, and fun weekend birthday plans are keeping me from spiralling too much.
I’m listening to all the angsty emo song of my youth today. I’ll try to turn it around tomorrow.

Sadness: my oldest is into wearing scrunchies on his wrist lately. Today at school he was teased and laughed at for it. It’s not the first time he’s been teased for being perceived as “too feminine” and it just hurts my heart.
I don’t know the right things to say other than to reiterate that everyone can wear whatever they like. I don’t want him to dim his own light because of others.

I want to come back with advice for him. But my mind is blank right now and I didn’t want to read and not respond.
