DD noticed her upper lip hair about a year(ish?) ago and said something to me. I said it’s a thing that happens, especially to girls with dark hair, and if she ever wanted to get rid of it, to tell me, and we would. I told her I have one and wax it off.
Today was the day. She and her friend were looking at themselves in the mirror, and her friend said something about it. Then they inspected their faces, and her friend has light hair, so they noted hers was only visible up close, while DD’s is more obvious from far away. So at bedtime she said she was ready. I told her sure, let’s do it tomorrow.
I talked a big game, but now what do I do? Nair? A tinkle razor? She has kinda sensitive skin, and obviously she is wearing a mask. I use Nad’s strips on myself, but that would hurt.

I made the same offer to my DDs. I took her to get waxed. I felt more comfortable letting a professional do it.

I bleach DD's. As soon as she turns 12, we are lasering that shit off. She is stoked.

First I want to say great job about having the dialogue with her and allowing her to make her own choices. I too have dark hair and noticed facial hair around her age and my mom was adamant I not do anything to it. I was 15 before I finally ally was able to wax it off.
I would let a professional do it especially since she has sensitive skin. I prefer the wax they put directly on the skin instead of strips. I find it doesn’t sting and leave as much redness.

I bleach mine.
I find it easier and more comfortable than waxing.
I kind of love Ella Emhoff for letting hers be.

My DS1 (11) has the beginnings of a mustache and unibrow and he didn't care for the look so I got him a pack of tinkle style razors and showed him how to use them. He was happy with that solution.

My mom let me shave my legs early, and it was such a gift. Also, I was internally screaming that they are already inspecting their faces together. I’m not ready for this!

I always break out with waxing so recommend a tinkle razor. I cleanse, apply shave cream, shave, apply aloe then regular moisturizer and avoid irritation.
Bleaching wouldn’t cut it for me.

Another rec for tinkle razors. I know you so this doesn’t have to be said but do it for her for a while.
I cut myself two weeks ago and went to drag brunch with two nice nicks a la the joker.

God I wish my mom would have helped me as a kid or talked to me about this, instead I had to figure it out on my own along with burning my skin from the bleach. I use tinkles now and think it would be the most gentle option

I am really in my feelings about this.
Not about whether to let to do, just like she’s so ollllddd. And I love it! But it was so fast!
Then she told me, “I’m lucky I have good friends because she went ahead and told me while we were in private, and I know she loves me, and then maybe I could have gotten teased about it, but now I won’t because we’re going to take care of it.”
So I pictured their whole conversation and 😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️.
Then she said, “well, I’m not surprised because my body is changing. Ya know, I’m almost 9 and everything.”
She turns 9 on Monday.

I would use the tinkle. Waxing is so painful to me. Maybe because I never do it.
Also be ready for other kids to comment on her sideburns if they come in dark and long. Kids called me “monkey face” 😩

I have this or something similar and it works great. I have a finer one for eyebrows, but I don’t use it as much because I get those professionally waxed.

OH MY GOSH rvascWHAT A SWEET FRIEND. and your DD for being so open about it!! I had a HELL OF A TIME growing up w my hair. Think Eastern Mediterranean, fair ish skin, dark, coarse hair. I was teased. I cried. My parents never once mentioned anything, never opened a dialogue, nothing. I remember asking my mom about shaving my armpits....man I dont remember when, but I had to bring it up. And she was like, oh, yea, ok. Same with my legs. Wtf. You're amazing. So is your DD. And her friend! I'd personally get one of those little electric ones linked above. I just shave now but I've waxed previously, but only professionally. For some reason I can do my eyebrows myself, but can never get those strips to like..grip? Enough on my lip.

i have this and use it on my chin and neck. It doesn’t get as close as the tinkle razors but I don’t get any irritation with it

I lurk from time to time. Tonight I happen to be while watching hockey and saw this thread. I wanted to suggest the Finishing Touch Flawless Facial Hair Remover. It doesn’t hurt and it does a good job. I’ve used one for years. Sorry if the link is long. www.target.com/p/finishing-touch-flawless-facial-hair-remover/-/A-75557663A few people here know me from my BMB. I’m not a catfish. Just a mom of two from Seattle who sucks at keeping up with message boards.

I think I’m going to start with this, and if the upkeep is too much, we’ll book a wax appointment. The great thing about the tinkle route is that she can do it immediately whenever she notices anything. A wax appointment takes a few days, at least, to get in so she may be feeling self conscious for that time. Anecdote: I can grow a noticeable mustache and white sideburns. I tinkle and don't bother waxing. It's so much more convenient and also cheaper.

Another vote for the tinkle razor. Easily manageable for her age, inexpensive, and the least irritating of all the options. Mostly just wanted to tell you rvasc that I'm so impressed with your daughter. As a kid I would have been crushed to have that conversation with a friend, or to even realize that I was different from my peers at all. Your DD is so confident and self assured--seriously amazing. Nice work, mom.

Nice work, mom. It’s her friends and their moms, honestly. We have cultivated this group of women in my neighborhood who support and love each other’s differences, and our daughters see it and model it and it makes my heart explode. I just hope it lasts.
