They were just on the Today show. I'm so happy that Noodle's owner is such an advocate of adopting older pets that need good homes for whatever reason.

I’m chaperoning an outdoor field trip and we have to meet the bus there. All the other parents have been standing in a group waiting for the bus that was supposed to arrive 15 minutes ago.
I, having worked at a museum for years, knew the bus would definitely not be on time and am still sitting in my car - avoiding making 20 minutes worth of dreaded small talk.

The 50k is attorney fees racked up by our less than illustrious Lt Gov when the AG told her to pound sand on her investigation of public schools and if they pushed CRT

I think there’s a real market for supplemental education materials in those states that have such backwards thinking. I’m basically going to have to purchase curriculum used in more progressive states to make sure my kids are at the same level.

PSA - if you have onions, and you don't know their country of origin, the CDC says to throw them out.

I mean SEL has always been a part of school? It’s just called different things and teachers are more aware of/working with differing needs The iff however is starting in their groups with the seeds of they shouldn’t be teaching our children how to feel etc. That it should be a parents job.

I don’t know where to put this because I know Succession has. A more current thread. But, I just hit episode 8 of season 1 (Bachelor party) and spent. A good amount of time googling the heights of actors.
Cousins Greg is 6’7”!
ETA: my weird autocorrect has decided to give punctuation to things before the letter A. It gives an emphasis that’s odd.

In case y’all were wondering what came after uproar about CRT, don’t worry Idaho is previewing it for you This is why they keep expanding their media empire. As long as they can make something up and convince people they need to be terrified of and angry about it they have a guaranteed 40% of the country in their clutches.

Also I love all the screaming about how teaching DEI is trying to "tear us apart" and "put us against each other" when it's literally about trying to bring harmony and empathy

Also I love all the screaming about how teaching DEI is trying to "tear us apart" and "put us against each other" when it's literally about trying to bring harmony and empathy Particularly when the original actors' intent was certainly not unity. If anyone is looking for a legalistic perspective, I really enjoyed "The Second Founding" by Eric Foner. It's about the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments during Reconstruction and how it set the foundation for our current issues. Very good book. www.npr.org/2019/09/17/761551835/second-founding-examines-how-reconstruction-remade-the-constitution

This is really random, but anyone have a favorite adult language learning method? My girls are in a Spanish language school and I had one year of college Spanish like 20 years ago, so starting not from zero, but close (also 6 years of Latin under my belt). I think I'd love to learn with them. I need to push myself. Thinking it could be my Christmas gift, like if Rosetta Stone is still the best.

I have a BA in French language and literature…used veeerrry little since graduating ~15 years ago and recently picked up Duolingo. I love it. The gamification really works for me and I feel like it’s all coming back.

byjove If you can find a way to speak it out loud weekly with others along with Duolingo. Usually there are groups that meet at libraries or even zoom to help people practice the language they are learning out loud.

byjove, the public library would likely offer a couple options for online learning, as well as books/audio. Through my system we use Transparent Language and Mango Language.

It was overpriced for what it was. I found it was okay for learning vocabulary and very basic phrases, but way less helpful for learning the grammar and understanding the spoken language. I’ve heard decent things about DuoLingo, but only used it briefly. The BBC has a ton of online resources for language learning. Your best bet if you want to be conversational and be able to help them with schoolwork would probably be to take an online or CC course and find a conversation group/partner. Finding people who were willing to chat and email with me in the language and give me gentle correction was the most helpful for me when I was learning French for my field work.

byjove, just another vote for DuoLingo. MH's family speaks Spanish even though he did not. He has learned so much. With it set up like a game, it's kind of fun too.

MH’s cousin is a PA state congressman in the Scranton area. He and his 4yo got to meet Biden this weekend! They asked the President to sign the 4yo’s train and the President said “I can do one better for you” then proceeded to take the flag lapel pin off his jacket and pinned it to the 4yo’s shirt collar. I.am.dead. The video is so adorable. 😭 🥰

byjove I used duolingo earlier this year and it was great. I recommend after you get past some of the intro stuff paying for the fuller access. It will allow you to get to the harder stuff more quickly. They also have a really great stories podcast that I got into. They tell a story in Spanish but give some info in English. I can’t say I understood even 75% of it but I felt really good when I would understand a whole section.
