dc2london, I read that earlier this year and didn't end up liking it. The ending just didn't do it for me!

Thanks. Added it to my holds. I finished the song of Achilles last night. YA is really not my thing. It was ok. I’m onto the invisible life of addie larue that I keep seeing recommended.

I didn't sleep much this week so I finished another book. There's a lot if suspension of disbelief required here and an extremely wilfull eleven year old but it kept me turning page after page.
The Photographer By Mary Dixie Carter
As a photographer, Delta Dawn observes the seemingly perfect lives of New York City’s elite: snapping photos of their children’s birthday parties, transforming images of stiff hugs and tearstained faces into visions of pure joy, and creating moments these parents long for.
But when Delta is hired for Natalie Straub’s eleventh birthday, she finds herself wishing she wasn’t behind the lens but a part of the scene―in the Straub family’s gorgeous home and elegant life.
That’s when Delta puts her plan in place, by babysitting for Natalie; befriending her mother, Amelia; finding chances to listen to her father, Fritz. Soon she’s bathing in the master bathtub, drinking their expensive wine, and eyeing the beautifully finished garden apartment in their townhouse. It seems she can never get close enough, until she discovers that photos aren’t all she can manipulate.

I finished Miss Moriarty, I Presume? last night. Once I hit the 2/3 mark, I could it put it down. I loved the ending! In general, I love all of Sherry Thomas’s twists on traditional Sherlockian canon. I can’t wait for the next one. 😁

I finished this book last night. It was a good old fashioned Cold War spy novel. A quick read, too. 'Moscow, 1985. The Soviet Union and its communist regime are in the last stages of decline, but remain opaque to the rest of the world—and still very dangerous. In this ever-shifting landscape, a senior KGB officer—code name GAMBIT—has approached the CIA Moscow Station chief with top secret military weapons intelligence and asked to be exfiltrated. GAMBIT demands that his handler be a former CIA officer, Alex Garin, a former KGB officer who defected to the American side. The CIA had never successfully exfiltrated a KGB officer from Moscow, and the top brass do not trust Garin. But they have no other options: GAMBIT's secrets could be the deciding factor in the Cold War. Garin is able to gain the trust of GAMBIT, but remains an enigma. Is he a mercenary acting in self-interest or are there deeper secrets from his past that would explain where his loyalties truly lie? As the date nears for GAMBIT’s exfiltration, and with the walls closing in on both of them, Garin begins a relationship with a Russian agent and sets into motion a plan that could compromise everything.' What’s everyone reading to start the new year? I finished two regency romances and How Lucky by Will Leitch. Currently reading Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune and Poet Warrior by Joy Harjo.
The ones I’m most looking forward to on my holds list are The Book of Longings, We are not like them, and Harlem Shuffle.

I think I’ve read 8 of them so far in the new year? A friend loaned me Circe by Madeline Miller. I need to get it back to her, so it’s next on my list.

I'm working my way through the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy. I'm about halfway through book 2. On deck after those is The Ballerina, The House in the Cerulean Sea, the Last Bookshop in London, and Thursday Murder Club- which I hope I'll like enough to pick up the sequel.
I did such a bad job of actually reading books last year, so hopefully diving in will propel me through this year.

I really liked Circe. It’s a good read.
I’m trying to get back into my reading world again. I just finished The Most Fun We Ever Had. It felt like the TV show Parenthood a bit and I really liked it.
I also read a middle grade graphic novel called When Stars are Scattered. It is about a Somali boy growing up in a refugee camp. I plan on adding it to my personal library for my kids to read.

I started 1619 (well tried to) this past weekend. Midnight in Washington is also on my list. I just need to be in the frame of mind to read both of them instead of fluff.

I'm listening to The Last Black Unicorn (Tiffany Haddish) during work breaks and should finish it up today. My last audio book was Adam Schiff so it's quite a swing in the other direction. LOL
I'm struggling with a regular book right now. The last few I've tried to start have all opened with someone dying and I can't hang with that right now. So I read a Sweet Valley High book on Kindle Unlimited last night. At least I read something?
I have The Family by Naomi Krupitsky and People We Meet on Vacation out from the library right now. Hopefully one of them catches my attention.

I got some books for Christmas that I'm working on. Right now I'm in the latest Old Kingdom book by Garth Nix, Terciel and Elinor. It's fun.

My first two books of the year were Clap When You Land (5 stars, HIGHLY recommend listening to the audiobook) and State of Terror, HRC & Louise Penny - not sure if it was the narrator or the writing, but it was super choppy and hard to get into even though the plot was pretty good.

At the end of the year I finished Pride, Prejudice and Other Flavors. It was a really fun twist on Pride and Prejudice, set in modern day Bay Area with a super wealthy Indian American family. Literal Indian royalty.

If you liked it, you’d probably enjoy City of Girls.

There's a great BBC adaptation of Tipping the Velvet, though I don't know if it's streaming anywhere.
Eta: it's available on BritBox (you can get through Amazon) and I believe they have a 7 day free trial.

I've actually read four books so far this year, which is more than I've done in a few years so I'm excited about that, even if they were kinda fluff.
First was A History of Wild Places which was pretty good. Then I read If You Tell by Gregg Olsen, which is really a really dark nonfiction crime story. Very well done but definitely not a light read. Next were The Cipher and A New Dawn, the first two books in a series by Isabella Maldonado. They were quick, and my best description is its the show Criminal Minds in book format.
I want to finish The Splendid and the Vile by Erik Larson and The Premonition by Micheal Lewis next (I started both at different points last year) but I may do another thriller instead.

Oh and also Rachael Stirling, the actress who plays Nan, is Diana Rigg's daughter.

I just finished Saving Noah by Lucinda Berry and whoa, that was dark. Major trigger warning for sexual abuse and suicidal ideation and so much more. Not a light read. There have been comparisons to We Need to Talk About Kevin, and I definitely get it. If you have the stomach for it, this one will really make you wonder what kind of parent you would be, and it really sticks with you. I cried so much and can't stop hugging my boys and appreciating how young and (relatively) uncomplicated they are.
