My sister is going and plans to FaceTime my dad while she’s there. I think I’ll go up and be with him on that day. Weird pandemic compromise. The FaceTime compromise can work. My H attended a celebration of life last month. They required vaccine and masks at the outdoor event. They also had designated FaceTime people who took the viewers around and showed photo collages, etc. It’s a compromise but felt like something to honor the life. That’s really nice. It’s my dad’s eldest sister who passed, the first sibling he’s lost… so he obviously wants to be there. But he has COPD and he’d risk a lot of wildfire smoke exposure just traveling there. So yeah, at least we have a compromise.

Alright alright alright A lower dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine — one-third the amount given to adults and teens — is safe and triggered a robust immune response in children as young as 5 years old, the drug companies announced in a news release Monday morning. The finding, eagerly anticipated by many parents and pediatricians, is a crucial step toward the two-shot coronavirus vaccine regimen becoming available for younger school-aged children, perhaps close to Halloween. Welp, my kid is home with a stuffy nose. It's her only symptom and I'm 99% sure it's seasonal allergies. Do I need a negative covid test to send her back to school tomorrow when she's feeling fine again? Is she going to miss a week of school while we wait for results?
GDI.
My rage at vaccine refusers is reignited this morning.

Based on their track record I don't expect anyone to ever call me back.

I teared up when I saw the news alert about Pfizer this morning.
Also, apart from the NPR ‘super hero’ antibodies article has anyone seen any research on what the antibody situation looks like after breakthrough covid? I am trying to figure out what my post isolation life is going to look like (obviously still masked and not going to packed places) since I had basically been living a shell of a life to avoid catching it. I am so desperate to get back to some semblance of what my life used to be.

I'm glad to see that news but let's hurry it on up and get it to the FDA now!!!
My coworker's daughter works at the Mayo Clinic here in MN and she said that her dept was told by the higher ups to cancel all elective surgeries for Nov and Dec. Apparently they are preparing for a big surge/wave the beginning of winter. Blech.

I have no reason to doubt what my coworker says, she basically only listens to the podcast that the Mayo puts out and what she hears from her daughter there. We'll see. Hopefully they are just being overly cautious...

I definitely think it's possible that states farther North will have surges as the weather gets colder. Hopefully not to the extent that the Southern states did over the summer if they're better vaccinated, but I guess we'll find out. I think we're looking at regional surges now.

Our surge last year started in November which is why I'm really hoping to have the kids vaccinated by then.

I think the other big part is because Delta does not play. We are finally starting to see a consistent lowering of the never of cases and hospitalizations across the board, but we had to get over 75% fully vaxxed before we saw that. Before that we were consistently seeing a couple thousand cases a day and steady hospitalizations. Now we are staying under 1000 cases a day and hospitalizations have dropped dramatically.
So without a huge vaccine uptake i think you will see pockets of spikes in communities.

My county hit 70% of the total population vaccinated with at least one dose! Now let's do the kids!

Areas with cold weather will see more as it’s harder to stay outside for things. 😢

And my county is still sitting here at about 45%. Stupid GQP Good ole Georgia 🙄 we’re acting like there’s no pandemic. The schools have a mask mandate, but when I went and withdrew DS2 on Friday, probably half the students I saw weren’t wearing them and probably close to half in the office staff. Whatever. The elementary school (from what I’ve seen) is only marginally better.

We are at 76% of 12+, not counting doses given by the military and government, which puts us in the low 80s last I heard. I was talking with my mom last night about how things are sooooo different based on where we live- my family is in Maricopa too, AmyG . We go into our target and easily 75% of people wear a mask. DH and I went to ikea in Woodbridge on Saturday and it was like 50% masking and we felt really uncomfortable. My mom said they are usually the only people in target wearing a mask and how she thinks colleagues are judging her for wearing a mask indoors when around vaccinated people (her work required vaccination) and here she would be the standard and everyone else the pariahs. It was hard to hear my mom so down by it. I was hoping they might come here for Christmas since they'll get boosters and the girls should be vaccinated by then, but she said they couldn't come here and not go to MI to see my grandparents, and it is bad as AZ there, and that's beyond their comfort. Maybe in the spring. Sorry for the ramble.

And my county is still sitting here at about 45%. Stupid GQP Same. We were supposed to start at a new daycare this week, and I can’t. There are no precautions in schools or daycares. Hospitals have no staff. But I am also at my breaking point of having them home and trying to work. My dad just had surgery and is unvaccinated (his neurologist has gotten all the side eyes from me about this) and I wanted to be available since I am his medical proxy. But I’m really not sure I can. PDQ my stress vomit. But going to daycare without precautions is just rolling the dice every day for the next 5 months, isn’t it?

And while we’re at it, H had a death in the family this weekend. We were already estranged for other reasons, but were told through the grapevine that the family was uncomfortable having vaccinated people at the service. So LOL?, makes that easy. I had no idea vaxxed people were a risk to unvaccinated people.

I got DD’s flu shot on Sat to get prepared if Covid vaxs are cleared in Oct. she was a mess during it, so I’m definitely not looking forward to doing this again twice this fall, but it is worth the tears and bribery toys/ice cream that will be involved.
Eta: I guess the gap isn’t required now per CDC?

He just had to be symptom free for 24 hours. If he’d had a fever or dry cough, it would have been required.

Hopefully we can bring it down further and get our number per 100,000 to go down fast once the 5-11 crowd can be vaccinated!

DS had a random throw up Friday morning in the car on the way to school and they were like negative CV pcr test and no symptoms required to return on Monday. It was negative, which we expected, plus he also had his 4y vaccines on Thursday afternoon so I chalked it up to that. But even if it’s one symptom we need a negative test.

Our daycare/preschool asks for a negative test or a doctor's note, and our pediatrician sometimes will write a note over the phone, depending on the situation.

We were expecting to need one, but we talked with his pediatrician first, then his school, and they were on the same page about it. He has a history of anxiety-related GI stuff that is documented with the pediatrician and wasn’t feeling sick at all after one throw up, which is why the pedi cleared us to come back after monitoring for any other symptoms for 24 hours.

lagom, ugh, could you convince your dad to get a second opinion? His PCP won’t go against neuro reccs. And I don’t think the neuro is giving poor advice overall, just weighing risks in a way that doesn’t seem to account for anything other than sitting at home alone until the pandemic is over. It’s tough because he’s had a bad reaction to a recent vax and they’ve been treating symptoms so long rather than identifying his underlying problem that it is very difficult to sort out what’s what anymore. Overall, I’m just stressed and pissed at everyone and everything. So there’s that.
