LaRo422, that is so awful! I would think, when it comes to it, that any college would look at these years and realize that it's out of the norm for all kids. I hope they find a way to get the kids the help they need.

Good news for once! Federal judge ordered an immediate halt on the mask mandate ban in Iowa! Now of course we have to see if the school board does anything.

This isn't a great system. DD became feverish on Saturday. When she was still feverish on Sunday morning I immediately sought a covid test. This was pre-dawn on Sunday and the earliest appointment was noon today (at a clinic open 7 days a week). Test results are taking 3-4 days to come back in my area. Keep in mind, none of my children can go to school until her test comes back negative (DS1 is still in quarantine either way, of course). So my younger 2 are going to likely miss an entire week of schschool, and that's with me acting quickly. We have got to get our act together with testing. If we want kids in schools, we can't just have these constant rolling disruptions. And my little kids get no instruction while at home. You only get virtual assignments and independent study if you are on quarantine at the school's request. (Luckily DS2's teachers have kindly shared with me what they're working on in the core subjects this week so I can keep him on track) Enough parents have pushed back against our schools that they are offering the limited streaming to kids in this situation now too, when before they said no. But parents had to get mad (which I know you can do!). ETA our district is big on “equitable” learning and if you through that around a few times, that usually greases the wheel

I think it's just unbelievably stupid of the schools to not offer a rolling virtual option for kids who are waiting for test results/ or voluntarily quarantining. It's not like they had no idea this would happen.

My cousins oldest tested positive for Covid yesterday. She had to temporarily move her middle child into her mother's because he is 8 and has CF. They're also in Florida so I'll add another fuck Desantis.

(Luckily DS2's teachers have kindly shared with me what they're working on in the core subjects this week so I can keep him on track) My 9th grader is currently failing math and he is distraught. He has goals of being a radiologist and said any bad HS grades could keep him from doing what he wants. He went to school the first two days (a Thursday and Friday), became symptomatic over the weekend, got tested on a Tuesday. He missed that whole week because we didn't get results until Friday morning. There was no virtual instruction. Only assignments sent to his school email. He didn't understand it because he wasn't being taught, so he got behind. He started school the next week, but then we got a letter that Thursday evening stating he'd been a close contact and to quarantine for 10 days (if we wanted, totally optional. We obviously chose to quarantine). So he missed the whole next week. Again, no virtual instruction, just emailed assignments. He still didn't understand the work, so he struggled through assignments. Then, school went virtual for two weeks, and it was a total shit show. The teachers couldn't catch him or the other students up on what they missed because then the whole class would be held up. They started back in person instruction today. I talked a counselor this morning and they said many kids are in this situation, and they're trying to figure it out. He's never failed a class or even come close to it. He gets mostly A's with a few B's sprinkled in. He has a 33 in that math class. He has C's in some other classes, but they're working with him. He's beyond frustrated and stressed. I told him we'll get it figured out. I can't believe that a year and a half in and we haven't figured much of anything out. JFC what? The school should be ashamed of themselves. It's been a year and a half, how do they not have something figured the fuck out yet? I'm so sorry your son is stressing. None of it is his fault and it's completely unfair and unacceptable.

Thanks y’all. He had a break down tonight and said he can’t handle the pressure. He’s too stressed about how covid is affecting his schooling and we made the decision to switch him to a virtual option. I think there is a waiting list, but we’ll figure it out.

It’s not offered through the school, but it’s accredited, so if he decides to go back next year then there won’t be any issues with missed credits. I wish y’all could have heard him. He sounded like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders. I hate how much everyone is struggling with pandemic burnout. It’s intense.

Results are guaranteed in 40 hours, but we got our back in 20. You can also pay $75 out of pocket for 12 hour turn around or $250 (yikes!) for 1 hour PCR results. They tested my K girl! Let me know if you’d like a PM!!!

LaRo422 - your poor guy. My mom was in higher ed until she retired last week. She repeatedly talked about this being a generational event. They also understood that gaps may exist because of it.

It is 6am, and the soonest I can find a PCR is 5:30pm. I can get a 2pm appointment if I wish to travel 30 minutes with an obviously sick child 🤬
DS2 needs a test because now he has a fever, but DD is confirmed to have HFM, so…

I agree with everyone that the testing situation needs to get figured out, this is insanity. I've been having intestinal distress for a few days and yesterday started to feel the beginnings of a headache and sore throat tickle. I assumed it was due to the storm front moving in because my body always reacts to that but I wanted to be safe. I searched all Walgreens and CVS in the metro area for an appt for yesterday evening after work and couldn't find anything for a rapid OR a PCR. All OTC tests sold out everywhere.
I got lucky by searching the vaccine hunter FB group I'm still part of and there was a lab not too far from my house that is in a strip mall and just does parking lot testing while you're in your car. I was able to get an appt within the hour. Results back in 20 min, negative. PCR results will come today or tomorrow but I'm feeling much more confident since today my sore throat is gone and my headache feels like a normal pressure headache.
But seriously, that was a stressful time finding an appt and this is going to be a real long fall/winter virus season if it doesn't improve.

If you wouldn't mind PMing me this, I'd like to have it in my back pocket. We've been ordering the at-home PCR tests for DH to test weekly and now I'm going to start having the kids do it regularly. They do DoorDasht them to our house but you have to UPS them back. I want to have some quicker options if they get sick.

richard PM sent! I should probably order a few boxes of Binax from somewhere online. I just hate how pricey they are. This is actually only the 2nd time I have felt the need to test since the pandemic started, so I feel fortunate that way.

I just ordered some Binax on Walmart (which I hate ordering from, but they were the only place I could find them), and they were $13 dollars. Which is at least better than it was when I bought them the first time.

Hopefully the price will go down soon

I was just able to order some Binax COVID tests from CVS online this morning. They haven’t been in stock any of the times I’ve tried to get them in person at the store. I’d like to be able to do surveillance testing on both of my kids now that they are back in school.
For those of you in the States who have used the mail-in PCR tests, which brand have you used? How expensive were they? I might pick up some of these as well since walk-in testing is so effed up right now.

I don’t care how many covid tests I take, I will never not panic when I get the text to check my results. Like I did last night at 12 am.
Negative, but nervous.

I still can't believe the prices of at home tests. It's gross.
They were 5€ initially here and are down to about a 1€ each now. And that's from private retailers, so not like government subsidy or anything.

I'm not sure how expensive it is, but looks like you can purchase them on an individual basis: www.vaulthealth.com/covid
