This is very difficult to see. The images of civilians attempting to flee is so heartbreaking and triggers a ton of emotions. I'm not saying Biden is to blame; it is definitely spread over more than one administration, but I think for me, his silence on this so far has not been a good look. We would most definitely say the same had Trump been in charge (and I absolutely despise the guy to be VERY clear). I don't think it's bad to want the troops out of Afghanistan, but it was so rushed. Couldn't we have pulled out slower and also left a small force there to keep it stabilized? I’m old enough the fall of Saigon photos are a relevant comparison in some ways. All the loss to end in more loss is so hard for me to watch. Lawrence O'Donnell had a piece about comparison of the two Monday night. It was interesting. And if you can find it, its a good watch. He speaks personally as someone who opposed Vietnam and all war.

POTUS is directing Dept of Ed Sec to circumvent Governors who are blocking commonsense covid restrictions, i.e. masks.

I saw that on twitter last night - baseball Twitter was active last night with that horrible hit Chris Bassitt took yesterday - and just couldn’t believe it. How stupid is he? And his apology was garbage.

And his apology was garbage. I mean, was it an outright racist rant or direct insult to Ohtani as a person? No, but eeeeesh. To be in 2021 and make an Asian accent joke on a live TV broadcast is just so old white man of him.

Please tell me this is satire Once again reinforcing how regional this stuff can be because this seems insane to me. My 5yo came home in Feb this year and told me all about MLK jr. they were teaching it in preschool! This is so ridiculous.

But how can they pretend that we "used to be great" if they teach anything negative from the past?

Because their school district is so large, they often determine what stays and goes in textbooks that school districts all over and contractually obligated to use for various reasons. So rather than print a different book for different districts the publishers go with the Texas version and basically force other districts to use it.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong but if I understand correctly this is not a ban on the teachings but rather a removal of the requirement to teach it? It’s still infuriating but makes me wonder if districts/teachers in bluer areas will do it anyway?

Unless this has changed, Houghtin Mifflin/Harcourt & McDougal Littell printed a separate book for Texas because the Texas history requirement is large and it does not make sense to have that in nationwide books. For the most part, at least in the 90s and aughts, there was one social studies text for Texas and one for the other 49 states; for every social studies subject and grade band. My dad used to work for those textbook publishers and he haaaaated Texas adoption year because there was so much different training and negotiations because the books were so different.

So this dude was apparently charged just with unlawful entry to the Capitol on Jan 6. There was no evidence he was violent and he told a story that minimized his inlvement that day. He even claimed to be a Democrat who didn't even like Trump. He was all set for a little baby slap on the writst. Online sleuths just found video of his beating a police officer, so the FBI is going back and adding more charges. YOU LOVE TO SEE IT!! www.cnn.com/2021/08/18/politics/robert-reeder-capitol-riot-sentencing/index.html

The reason Texas leaders have been so batshit awful lately is because we’re no longer truly a red state. They’ve gerrymandered us to hell, enacted voter suppression laws, and done everything to stomp out the fact that Texas is pretty purple, possibly leaning blue. They know if voting was fair, they would no longer hold power.

Dr. Cox, exactly. They are scared shitless. And if TX isn’t red, Republicans are in trouble nationally too.

Im sick so I might not really get this right But the city of phoenix is suing the state of az for all the extraneous extras they added to the recent budget bill. Phx take is the az constitution says bills need to be about what they say they are about mostly single subjects or related subjects.
The complaint is they put stuff in the budget bill that would negate oversight of police. But i think that's also where they put the mask mandate ban.

I cannot wrap my brain around schools just choosing to omit history them find personally offensive. It's such bullshit and I hope they get called on it, somehow. I don't know. Fuck them.

A small school district just south of Portland voted to ban Pride and Black Lives Matter signs and flags citing "politics" so some neighbors directly across the street from the campus put up an enormous progressive pride flag facing the school but on their property. I hate the vote, but love that regular folks are like fuck it, you're not taking this away.

It’s still infuriating but makes me wonder if districts/teachers in bluer areas will do it anyway? Oh lots of teachers will still teach it! But the kids who definitely won't get any anti-racism, honest history at home also will now possibly not get it at school. We have so, so much moving forward to do in terms of honesty and equity ANY step backward is worthy of attention
