Random, yet interesting thread about refugee-evacuation logistics. Praying for safety for all the refugees and everyone helping them in AFG.

The dep natsec secretary just gave a word salad about evacuation of ~30k people
Q Are you talking about people at the airport
A No it has to be orderly and they need to show up when their flight is called
But the airport is shut down, streets owned by taliban and you’ll probably be executed or incarcerated if you leave the complex to get to the airport
It’s a shitshow and we should have done better

People were seen falling from lifting off aircraft because they are so desperate to leave.

800 evacuated on one flight - trackers showing multiple military aircraft from various countries involved as well RCH-871 is hardly alone, however. Online flight tracker data collected by open-source researchers reveal that a full spectrum of military airlift capabilities are at work over Afghanistan in a bid to create a sustainable air bridge to evacuate tens of thousands of expatriates and Afghan allies from Kabul even as Taliban fighters secure the capital and prepare to proclaim a new government called the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. www.forbes.com/sites/sebastienroblin/2021/08/16/800-people-one-jet-flight-trackers-reveal-heroic-desperate-effort-in-chaotic-afghanistan-evacuation/?sh=5c6672a4bedbI don't think 'they' can send commercial aircraft in at this time, and most commercial carriers are staying out of that airspace - for myriad reasons, I would think.

It's so intellectually dishonest but unsurprising that they're gonna pretend that what's happening now is the responsibility of one man. We have made so many missteps over the past 20 years. There are 4 Presidents worth of blame here. (Including the last guy, who released 5,000 Taliban fighters and negotiated with that whole group without the Afghan government.)

They're just going to completely ignore that Trump legitimized the Taliban by meeting with them, withdrawing troops, and releasing 5,000 prisoners including the guy who just took over Kabul? Yeah, they can definitely fro.

FOUR other presidents bare responsibility as well.

So I'm jumping in as someone who knows very little about international politics, but how is Biden to blame here? Either way, he was screwed. It was either continue to send troops over without support or pull them.
PDQ - My H was deployed there over 6 years ago and said then that it wasn't going to change anything then. He's very much not surprised by what is happening now.

unheardof, because he is the current commander in chief. While other administrations certainly share the blame, biden is the one in charge. It sucks but it is what it is. If it had been successful he would have gotten all the glory. There was no good time to withdraw. I truly believe that, the Taliban never went away and just bided their time. Centuries of this have taught them they just had to have patience. I'm sure once 45 legitimized them, the planning for the takeover went into overdrive.

Biden is going to address the nation at 345p EDT on this situation. That should be interesting.

This is very difficult to see. The images of civilians attempting to flee is so heartbreaking and triggers a ton of emotions. I'm not saying Biden is to blame; it is definitely spread over more than one administration, but I think for me, his silence on this so far has not been a good look. We would most definitely say the same had Trump been in charge (and I absolutely despise the guy to be VERY clear). I don't think it's bad to want the troops out of Afghanistan, but it was so rushed. Couldn't we have pulled out slower and also left a small force there to keep it stabilized?

He's known for empathy and I am missing that right now. ETA: I know he is speaking this afternoon. I hope it is the first of many addresses.
