I finished In a Dark Dark Wood it was pretty good. Now reading Before She Disappeared and not enjoying it at all. Trying to speed read through it. I didn’t like that one either. I don’t remember much of it except there being some odd racist tones in it.

I'm listening to The Anthropocene Reviewed, read by John Green. First of all, he's the best. Second, there have been some serious LOL moments. I thoroughly enjoyed his review of air conditioning.

I actually went to the library yesterday and picked out a book for myself! 😱 I am starting with Spook by Mary Roach. For those of you on the nerdy side, I highly recommend her. Her book Stiff is one of my favorites. Her writing is funny yet educational. Non-fiction with a blend of humor and science. She has a new one out in September, Fuzz: When Nature Breaks the Law. I have it pre-ordered on Audible and can't wait.

It totally sounds like binging a podcast.

I finished The Dollhouse by Fiona Davis last night. I enjoyed the beginning and then it felt like it was dragging and didn’t know where to go. Three stars. I started Bunny last night and don’t know what to think but I’m intrigued.

I just finished the Great Circle by Maggie Shipstead and London is the best city in America by Laura Dave. The former was really good but long. The latter was ok but a quick read.

I am almost done with Stranger in the mirror and got to the "twist" and BLAH. I'll finish since I only have about 50 pages, but it isn't good to me.

I am almost half way through The People You Meet on Vacation and mostly love it, but I'm getting increasingly frustrated with Poppy. I suppose this is a normal/purposeful reaction, right?

Hello, I actually finished a book this month! I just finished The Good Daughter by Karan Slaughter. It was really good but should come with some major trigger warnings.
In a complete change of genre I’ve got a Hunt for Red October on hold at the library for my next book. Should be able to pick it up tomorrow

Finished Dark Waters, the newest installment in Katherine Arden’s middle grade horror series. I don’t generally read middle grade but I love Arden and these stories are well done and creepy.
Now I’m endeavoring to reread the last two Outlander novels before the new one is released in November. They are so long it may very well take me that long to finish them! I do love this series, even with all the constant drama.

I stayed up late to finish People You Meet on Vacation and I cried at the end. Overall I thought it was great, but I struggled with Poppy. It reminded me a bit of Carrie from SATC. As a 20 yo watching the show as it aired, I loved her and thought she was awesome. As a 30 something yo, I can’t stand her. It kind of feels like as a 20 yo I would have thought Poppy was super awesome too, but now I’m on the other side I’m not impressed. Does that make sense?
I have a skip the line copy of the House by Cerulean Sea that came available this morning to start. We are leaving on vacation this weekend, so hoping it’s a good book for that. Also have The Bookish Life of Nina Hill on audio for the car ride.

I started The Perfect Couple by Elin Hildebrande yesterday and will likely finish it today. I am really enjoying it and it's exactly the mood I was looking for.
The Maidens and Villa America came up from the library so I think those will be my weekend camping reads.

I'm half way through From Scratch by Tembi Locke and am totally invested. The way she describes Florence (Italy) and love and loss, everything about it is so relatable. Planning to read All the Bright Places (Jen Niven) and The Newcomer (Mary Kay Andrews) when I finish this one.

adelbert, I can only speak to the "so far" of things, maybe CestLaVie can weigh in overall. The author goes back and forth from present day to the early days, spanning 20+ years and when it's sad, it's very, very sad. But it isn't all sadness. She doesn't skim over that part of things, but neither does she dwell.

Some parts were obviously sad, but overall, a story of love and family. I'm also a sucker for stories from Sicily and Italy.

Yes, like I thought it was a really insightful type of sad. I read it on a work trip so it wasn't like a crying-into-your-kleenex type of sad. I didn't think it was depressing though, it was an enjoyable read.

CestLaVie it fascinates me and is such a reminder of how differently we all read the same material. There was a part of the book where I had to set it aside and let myself weep for a minute. I am an emotional person anyway (lol understatement of the year if you ask anyone I know irl) but I was having a visceral reaction to her storytelling because of my own personal experience with the subject matter. I agree about it not being depressing, but that one part, for me, was definitely a "glad I'm not on a plane next to a stranger" minute!

I got the Amy Rose Bennett Disreputable Debutant series after someone here mentioned it. I’ve liked, but not loved other books of hers. These aren’t bad, but I shouldn’t be binging the series because they are so similar. I just have nothing else to read right now. I liked the first one, not so much the second one as both leads were incredibly annoying and had no fixed personalities, and the third one is fine, I’m just over the same plot. I can only take so many dudes who “dOn’T kNoW hOw To LoVe”. I’m just obsessed with you and attracted to you and want to be around you all the time and can’t stop thinking about you and I’m devastated when we are apart WHAT CAN IT BE.
I’m on book 3 and this version of dude who doesn’t know how to love is Scottish so there’s that I guess.
