I just had mine this morning, and got some concerning news.
While everything is structurally sound with baby itself, it turns out I am a freak and have 2 placentas - a main one and an "accessory." They are on opposite sides of the ute and connected by membranes that stretch over my cervix - vasa previa. While it's possible it could move out of the way, it's unlikely, and I've been told to prepare for C-section at 34 weeks. They'll check it again at 28 weeks and see if there's been any improvement on the location. The literature out there on vasa previa is really frightening and I'm so upset.

typo31 - I'm so sorry! I wish I knew more about vasa previa to offer some advice - maybe ask in Pregnancy? I know grads still hang around that board, so someone over there might have some experience, or know someone who did. Sending love and hugs your way.

typo31, wow - that's a lot! I'm sorry you received such worrying news. I'm glad baby is ok, and I'm glad that they're going to monitor you closely and already have a plan in place. My daughter's bestie is a 34 weeker who had IUGR, and she's a fierce and mighty toddler now, completely fearless, and a-ok. She's got a slight language delay, but nothing anyone is too worried about. I also have a college friend who delivered at 23 weeks. Her son did have some serious delays and a LOT of challenges, but he's a healthy 3 or 4 year old now. And another college friend delivered at 30 weeks due to a placental abruption and you'd never know her son was early. All this is to say, they're monitoring you, and based on my limited experience with a range of early to barely-more-than-halfway deliveries, you and baby can do this. You're right that what is on google seems terrifying, so if I were you, I would try to limit your consumption for self-preservation reasons and take your cues from your doctor. Hugs.

Wow typo31. Wish I knew more about that to offer some advice. The only experience I have is with a c-section. I will be having one with this baby too. If you have any questions about c-sections I can answer those. I've already shared how my scan went. We'll see how things go in about a month. Also, here's a picture of my little one. typo31 I'm sorry for the scary news. I've never heard of that before. I know it's really scary, but I would take comfort in the fact that your care team is aware of this now and will be doing everything the can to ensure everything is okay.

sarahandben108, I have to go back too. I had to with DD as well. With her they were missing info on her stomach and with baby boy they didn't get his kidneys. It's really common. I was so worked up last time (my old OB was very bad at communication) but, everything was totally fine.

typo31 I'm sorry. I had my first by CS at 36 weeks. He was totally fine. FX things improve, but if not, you and baby will be ok.

typo31 I'm sorry you had a concerning AS. I hope it improves! My anatomy scan is this Friday and I'm anxious bc my previous doctor never went over the result of my quad screen with me. The nurse in me knows that usually any abnormal results would be reported to me, but I don't trust my old OBs office not to drop the ball since they already did with my thyroid. typo31 sorry you got concerning news. It's great that your doctor knows about it and can monitor you carefully. My niece was born at 35 weeks and she was perfect- small but she didn't even need a NICU stay. AFM, my scan was yesterday and it went well. They got all the views they needed and everything looked fine. The only slightly concerning thing is that I have a partial placenta previa. My doctor is hopeful that it will be shifted into a better position as things expand, but if not I'll need a c-section. We'll recheck at 30 weeks and see how things look then. I don't know anything about vasa previa, but I did have a scheduled CS with DD due to her being breech so if it comes to it and you have any questions, I'm here for you.

typo31, I'm sorry. I hope everything moves in the right direction. A lot of my friends has scheduled c sections and all the kids were fine, none needed any extra care.

Thanks for allowing me a moment of panic, everyone. officedronette , kim22 , BlahBlahGinger ,I love hearing the positive stories about early delivery! After doing some more research on this condition (which, btw, is about 1:2500 in normal pregnancy but 1:200 in IVF - I had no idea??) I'm feeling a bit calmer. Almost all of the accounts of infant deaths and stillbirths correlate to those who had undiagnosed vasa previa and went into spontaneous labor. When it's diagnosed and the mother is kept from breaking her water (hence, the 34 week CS date) the babies almost always live. Thank god for these fancy-schmancy anatomy scans! The super cool blood flow red/blue doppler was the thing that caught it. My husband and I have cancelled a trip we had planned at 26 weeks that wasn't close enough to a triage/NICU hospital and are choosing to remain positive that I'll make it to surgery before anything bad could happen.

I'm sorry to hear about the placenta previa, BlahBlahGinger. I know quite a few friends who had theirs move throughout their pregnancies - I hope you are one of these success stories!

Our scan went pretty well today and we are still firmly team green. They couldn't get all the measurements because baby had both hands and feet over its face and they couldn't get full spine measurements. The tech said that's pretty normal, that they can either get really good heart measurements or spine but not both, but everything they could see was normal. We go back in the middle of August for the second half.

Lurking again... typo31 One of the ladies on March 17 had vasa previa. I'd tag her here to share more of her positive anecdote, but our BMB moved to Facebook rather than transitioning here in the most recent exodus. Anyhow... hers was also discovered at her a/s. She had pretty frequent ultrasounds for the remainder of her pregnancy, checked into the hospital at 32 weeks for bedrest and constant monitoring until delivery, and made it to their scheduled c section date at 36 weeks. Her little guy is a big, thriving, nearly 6-month old now. Thank you so much!

typo31, that is scary and a lot to take in at once. I am glad they identified it early and can help guide you through the proper treatment plan. My best friend's little sister had 2 placentas and was able to deliver just fine - she just delivered both of them. They never mentioned vasa previa so it was definitely under different circumstances. I had my scan yesterday and everything is still looking good. Firmly team green here as well. I closed my eyes whenever they got relatively close to the bottom half...

I had my scan this morning and all is well. They said Daph has all the right parts and they're in the right places. She does not have a penis, which is good, because I really like her name and don't want to change it. She also has a cute little nose just like her sister. But is WAY more active. Which I guess I knew already from all the movement I can feel, but if she's like this on the outside, oh boy we are in trouble.

I had my scan yesterday. From what they could see of baby everything looked good. They confirmed we are team pink. 🎀I will have to go back for more measurements bc she wouldn't cooperate for some things which they assured me was normal.
In other news, they found that I have a low lying placenta and said if it doesn't migrate I will need to have a c-section. As much as I understand why it would be medical necessary, I'm anxious about that possibility.

babydsmama, I had to have a c section last time and this time again. My water broke naturally with N but I wasn't progressing fast enough. They wanted him out within 24 hours. They gave me pitocin and it put him in distress. It wasn't what I pictured his birth to be but it wasn't terrible. I had to stay 3 days at the hospital and I had to heal a lot after. But I will say that after a week I stopped my major pain meds and was just using just ibuprofen. I had a lot of numbness at the sight but on the plus side I had a lot of less bleeding after because they "clean" you out quite a bit. Of course there are risks as it is major surgery but it wasn't the end of the world.

sarahandben108 thanks for the reassurance! I delivered DD vaginally and it wasn't a terrible recovery. Part of me is afraid of the unknown and the other part is afraid of csection recovery with DH deployed, a newborn, and a toddler. Again, if necessary I will do what needs to be done, but I'm just worried right now! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I hope you have some family that will be able to help out. I didn't have a 3 year old the last time so I'm worried about that part. But I do have my husband around to help. I know that it must be difficult to go through that with a husband who is deployed.

I found that having months to kind of mentally prepare for it helped me a lot. If you have questions about the procedure or recovery, let us know. Fx it will move though!

Thanks ladies! Trying to plan anything has been impossible lately. We just got word that DH may not even deploy now! As much as I don't want him to go, we already moved!! DD and I are already living in MA. Now we're kind of in the dark about if he's actually deploying or not. Makes me really look forward to 5 years from now when he can finally retire! 😕
