jkjacqTechnical communication Human Resources management Corporate education Sociology Admittedly I am full ensconced in corporate America but I would major in technical communication and minor in corporate education. The tech communication degree can get you in the door at many companies in any written communication area-I know clear and concise writing is always a skills that is being trained too; the minor in corporate Ed opens up additional areas for you to use that technical communication degree (ie developing training).

It’s legit smokey here today and I want to cry and run away. Instead (hopefully) I’ll review my coping mechanisms and stay inside. PTSD sucks. 😢

To answer some questions, future salary is not a deciding factor. H is the breadwinner and travels quite a bit, so I am ok with working a lower-level job with little to no travel. My heart wants an English degree. I think sociology is so interesting, but admittedly I’m not sure how it would translate to a career. However, I have many years of corporate experience, and the degree is more of a bucket list thing for me. Technical writing and corporate education are really the only business degrees that interest me. Human Resources management seems like a smart choice, and it’s offered at a university with name recognition.
I need a fully online program, and that limits me quite a bit. But with our family life, online is what works the best.

What are you doing now? Also, I would not rule out English if that is where your heart is and you have a plan to translate that into a job on the other side. I have a history degree and make more than MH. With an English degree, you can teach, or you can be a grant writer, proposal writer, work in comms, etc. There are lots of options. If you can connect your current work, and English degree + a plan for the future, why not?

overboard personally I would go with sociology because it seems to interest you most. When I was having my midlife crisis last winter I started looking at all kinds of advocacy and community support type jobs and lots of them required a sociology degree. I would hate for you to do the “smart” thing and end up feeling blah about it, you know?

Thanks y’all for helping me think through this. Most of my work experience is in health and safety: permitting, presentations, PPE etc. Then I stayed home for six years with the kids before they went to school. Currently, I’m working part time in higher Ed. I’m not tied to staying in higher Ed, but if it works out I’m ok with that. I had similar thoughts easier and that’s what led me to sociology. Now I’m thinking about adding in more volunteering and training to be a CASA advocate instead of making it a career.

If anyone wants a laugh, I had a random encounter on my walk this morning. On a very sleepy side street, in the middle of the sidewalk I came upon an extremely large, black, double ended dildo. Can't say I've seen one of those before. It was still there, but discreetly kicked to the curb, when I took DH by it later as a surprise.

Oh my goodness, I immediately teared up when she started talking. Thank you. ❤️ Thanks enchanted dc2london addymac for your kind words too. Luckily - well , smartly I guess, since I made the decision - I just restarted therapy last week. So I had my action plan all sketched out and I’m following it. Having support here helps a lot too. ❤️

I had a dream last night that the Bidens came to my house for Thanksgiving dinner. It was very random.

overboard I have two degrees and one is Sociology with an emphasis in Law and Society. I loved it and it made my education go so quickly because I was genuinely engaged in my coursework. My other degree is in Economics, which is equally fascinating to me. I learned a ton in both, but honestly 20 years later the Sociology course work stands out as having taught me so much that still impacts me to this day. The framework of looking at systems and cultures at a macro level really helps me think through problems and analyze issues.

My local NPR tells me about 10 times a day that they can help me get my business degree on my terms.

dc2london Happy Birthday to your daughter! Any special plans for today? She just asked for lots of pool time. And miso soup. Lol. I went a touch overboard with presents so she's been quite content.
