Winter for kids now? And I have one in both of the age categories. Both are going back to school- 2nd grade and preschool. It’s needed for their mental emotional health. But im terrified. I feel like it’s worse than we were a year ago because there is no mask mandate here. The amount of parents already proclaiming their kids won’t wear a mask is staggering. I don’t know that we can keep this up all year. I can’t. Ugh. I want to cry! Hi, friend who also has a preschooler and 2nd grader and no masks in sight. This state.

My county (DMV) just announced full masks for everyone and I think they said elementary may be able to transition between virtual and in person each quarter, which previously had sounded like an all year commitment. I don't plan to do that, but glad to hear there may be more flexibility given the delta changes and vaccine timeline.
I think I'm going to spring for some happy masks to try, since my natural reaction to stress is throwing money at a problem.

For my situation, the data currently emerging that the fully vaccinated may transmit more viral load than was previously believed has a big impact. Yes, that is making me nervous as well. Combined with the fact that kid vaccines keep getting pushed back, and I'm thinking my kids are going to have to start wearing their masks around grandparents again. Ugh this sucks. It was the one area of my kids lives that was "normal." And I know it's early and probably nobody wants to think about this, but it's going to majorly impact the holidays for our family again most likely. Ugh this sucks. My ILs just visited for the 2nd time since the pandemic started (1st was about a month and a half ago) and we know with school starting soon it'll likely be a while before we see them again. If the kids are back in school it just seems too risky. I know DD and DS2 will be super disappointed, they've really loved seeing someone other than their parents.

She wants to go so bad and I was so hopeful she'd be vaxxed and we could breath a little easier (literally) My HSer I'm less worried about because he's vaxxed and will wear a mask, but if he got sick it'd still likely end up spreading to everyone in the house via the preschooler that loves climbing all over him

Anyone else a stress shopper? This pandemic has made me one and I keep buying and selling crap on the internet. I need to get it under control before the new IRS reporting thresholds for Paypal/ebay take effect in Jan ($600 in "sales" threshold nationally vs $20k, some states were already $600)
Do not need another thing to keep track of on my plate

Last year they decided at the last second to mask at elementary school. That made it easier, and they had a successful year. I’m not hopeful for a Hail Mary this year.

Even with the CDC recommendation I doubt our state will mandate masks. And if the state doesn't mandate there is no way the district will. Because we are going to a new district for DD, I may have her go the first two weeks just to make connections in a new school environment. And then have her go on homebound until things settle down again.

Covid Kim is not happy with the new recommendations.
"The Biden Administration’s new COVID-19 guidance telling fully vaccinated Iowans to now wear masks is not only counterproductive to our vaccination efforts, but also not grounded in reality or common sense."
And of course the people in the comments section are loving it. I hate this place.

Also, we basically have no state board of health right now either because she refuses to appoint any democrats so they are short 7 of 11 spots and can't meet. Seems like a great idea in the middle of a pandemic 🙄 That woman is so fucking dangerous.

I'm wondering if my ILs, who are retired and very careful, will want to do the same.

My county and the very large county next to me are still in 'moderate' levels re transmission, but who knows how microtargeted any mandates/suggestions will be from the state/county level.
I admit I really got used to not wearing a mask at my very large, very airy, and at the times I go, pretty quiet, gym. Already sad about that - and, yes, realize that's a very small thing in the scheme of life.
I don't see shutdowns happening, though, at least right now - I don't think the restaurant industry, etc., truly can withstand that. And I do think there's going to be greater anger/frustration at those who choose against vaccination, no matter how poor or good their reasons may seem. Caveat - not the truly medically exempt.

Anyone seen guidance on the "high transmission area" terminology? Yes. Basically everywhere. We're in a substantial area, but most people will look at the actual numbers and think it's not that bad since our population is lower. 1 case a day isn't something they'll think we need to worry about.

I went in to talk to my admin about some things yesterday. One of them has a grandson in a local charter school that is on a year round schedule, so they're already back in. Apparently there mask policy has been lose...if a parent, and not a doctor stated they had a "medical condition" they didn't have to mask, so mask usage has not been great. While I was sitting there, her daughter texted that 250 kids were under quarantine 😱. I can't find anything about it on local news pages, but she read her text while I was there.

Like everyone being vaccinated is the goal so that everyone can survive but...the implications of that are just staggering. I can't even think about it.

I can't wait to read the comments if masks become mandatory for the fall. I am a member of a fb group for our state's educators and comments by some teachers (and one is a relative) make me hate people.

Here's the thing about schools and no mask policies. It is going to spread through students and staff, apparently even ones who are vaccinated, like wildfire. They are shooting themselves in the foot because I don't know who is going to teach kids when no one can find large numbers of subs. And I know it's regional, but do not for a second assume that many teachers are vaccinated.
I'm afraid this is going to be a very bumpy first half of the school year in a lot of places. I don't think we're done with remote learning yet ☹.

Same. I worry about how much lack of testing is happening now. That unknown is terrifying. We've been consistently showing only 2-5 cases/ day in a very red county of 153k people. We just surged to 18 cases. I know the true numbers are more. These people aren't testing, masking, vaccinating and consequently the school districts here think they're "safe" and won't mandate a damned thing. I'm petrified about school. Dd2 will be in 1st and dd3 in preK, in separate buildings. That's so many potential exposures among the unmasked and I'm constantly feeling borderline to a panic attack. I wish pulling them were a viable option, but having them home 2/3rds of last school year was a nightmare I'm still reeling from. I cannot do it again. We feel fucked no matter what. Eta: I guess I'm in a "moderate" area. But I feel like that's a lie.

Like everyone being vaccinated is the goal so that everyone can survive but...the implications of that are just staggering. I can't even think about it. I mean if people will go back to wearing masks, which vaccinated people are probably more likely to, then hopefully not. Personally, I feel like my risk as an always masked, vaccinated person is low. We've never really expanded our social circle beyond family, still don't eat in restaurants or really do too much other than grocery/Target trips. I do have a hair appointment tomorrow and I'm going in Home Goods after, but those are 2 "risks" I will take now that I'm vaccinated that I didn't take before. But I'm aware most people are not willing to lead such a boring life, and I don't blame them! Had we been doing more, I'd probably feel very bitter about having to give it up again. I know it will get more risky in a month when I have to supervise unmasked kids at lunch and when my daughter is one of those kids who might bring it home to us. Then I'll probably feel like you do because I'm expecting cases to be awful once kids are back in school if masks aren't required at least inside.

I think in this space, where most of us have been vaccinated and have been taking this virus seriously, it's OK to vent about situations where you need to mask again where it's unpleasant. Personally, I'm not interested in judging or pain Olympics trolling anyone for saying, "It was nice to not have to wear a mask for 2 hours in the salon and now I have to" or whatever. IMO if you've done what was advised this while time, you get to feel upset or petty or irritated. That's just my opinion and I'm only one person.

I haven't seen anything like that, to be clear, I just would hate for people to feel like they can't vent here because "that's what the CDC said, get over it" or any such thing
