I'm catching up but the last line of this tweet made me laugh out loud. I've been, uh, writing a story all day.

Major anxiety about school starting for my eldest in 3 and a half weeks kept me up half of the night last night. 😴Thankfully the district is keeping masking protocols in place but I'm still nervous with how contagious the Delta variant is turning out to be - I can't believe things are pretty much back to where they were a year ago.

Does anyone else follow pediatrician mom called Beachgem? I really like her content. It's simple and her calm way of speaking helps

Well the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Both myself and a couple of my coworkers sent separate emails to our union president to request a union member meeting to discuss this "back to work" plan since we have serious concerns given the Delta variant and the fact that our workload requires zero in office interaction currently because our court is still virtual into next year. We want a meeting so that we can get a group of people together to force management to talk to us about what the hybrid situation looks like going forward into fall. We will see what happens.

This isn’t ant different than being told we need TB tests yearly or get your flu shot or you’ll need to mask. I think it’ll hold up in court. My first thought was not having full FDA approval might be some basis for refusal - or litigation. For those NYC employees that are unionized, I hope the union leadership is all in on vaccinations. Most unions are “highly encouraging” it, and even said that stuff like this could be authorized as we already have precedence 🤷🏼♀️

We're still planning on traveling to the US in 3 weeks and I'm so stressed about it. Is it the right thing to do? Should I just go alone? How can I keep the DDs safe on the 23hr trips? How can we safely see relatives who will have to travel to see us? I've got a massive headache today from clenching my jaw over all this stress 😫 We made the trip in June. Having just had Covid changed my mental stress levels significantly, but it was touch and go for awhile — everyone got a post Covid cold with lingering airline impossible cough 2 weeks before departure — and the idea that any kind of illness can throw a wrench in things is really stressful — but I am glad we came. Things are surprisingly normal despite everything and we have been careful, but still doing lots of stuff outside.

Here's the WaPo version of that earlier story about more testing for the 5-11 age group. They say timeline definitely delayed, just don't know how much. I get that if there is concern, best to do due diligence now so doctors and parents will feel safe, but frustrating no less. www.washingtonpost.com/health/2021/07/26/fda-asks-pfizer-moderna-test-their-vaccines-more-children-under-12-help-rule-out-safety-issues/"The FDA is likely to require two months of follow-up data for the 5-to-11 age group, as it did for adults and adolescents. For children under 5, the agency may require four to six months of follow-up data, meaning vaccines are unlikely to be available for several months for infants and young children."

Moderna confirms expansion of kids' covid trial (5 to 11). excerpt The U.S. drugmaker is expanding the trial, which began in late March, to increase the likelihood of detecting potential rare side effects, the company said, declining to say how many children it ultimately hopes to enroll. The Food and Drug Administration last month added a warning label to the Pfizer and Moderna Covid-19 vaccines to list a rare risk of heart inflammation, which was reported in young people, as a potentially rare side effect. "It is our intent to expand the trial and we are actively discussing a proposal with the FDA," the company told CNBC in a written statement. "At this point, we expect to have a package that supports authorization in winter 2021/early 2022, should the FDA choose to use the authorization avenue." www.msn.com/en-us/health/medical/moderna-says-it-plans-to-expand-covid-vaccine-trial-for-kids-5-to-11-will-seek-fda-ok-as-early-as-year-end/ar-AAMAhBe?ocid=BingNewsSearch

Winter for kids now? And I have one in both of the age categories. Both are going back to school- 2nd grade and preschool. It’s needed for their mental emotional health. But im terrified. I feel like it’s worse than we were a year ago because there is no mask mandate here. The amount of parents already proclaiming their kids won’t wear a mask is staggering. I don’t know that we can keep this up all year. I can’t. Ugh. I want to cry!

Fuck fuck fuck about that news. I get it, it is best to be cautious but ugghhh. I was really dreaming about my oldest being fully vaxxed by Halloween and the twins by Christmas. Blah. This is where I pray for lemondrop to come in with some insider knowledge that is against the news, lol.

Wow. That makes me really sad to hear the latest vaccine info for kids. I feel defeated for all the kids and parents out there. I know I’m lucky that DS’s school is requiring masks but I feel for everyone whose schools aren’t. Ugh. Fuck fuck fuck.

What I guess I don't understand, is I'm sure the vaccine makers needed to submit their study protocols somewhere in the first place right? If so, shouldn't the FDA have known how many participants the studies had? And if so, couldn't they have let them know earlier that they needed more participants instead of waiting until they were almost done with the study to tell them?
I'm just feeling depressed tonight and kind of resigned to the expectation of my kid getting COVID at some point. Why have I done so much (and deprived our family of so much) to keep her safe again?

I would guess that because of the rare side effects that have been seen (heart problems?) in the youngest eligible kids now, they are rethinking things and feel they need a bit longer/more participants to know the scope better of any issues that will arise in the littlest kids group. Cause I know lots of people panicked over the adult side effects and then freaked more at the 12-16 year olds side effects too.

So much this. It's fucking enraging. It shouldn't be so hard to keep our kids safe. We know how to do it. We know the kids can handle it.

I’ve got nothin, y’all. I’m just spent. I’m sick to my stomach that we’ve gotten so close, and the FDA just proverbially punched us directly in the face.
To answer a few: yes, the FDA has known since the protocol was drafted how many children would be in each trial. To start a clinical trial, a sponsor must submit an IND (Investigational New Drug); that IND describes the protocol in detail. This is not a surprise, this is not a question. The FDA has known since… December? January? How many kids were being enrolled. They have in the past on other clinical trials requested more data, more subjects, but… this is an unprecedented situation. I’m aghast. My contact at the pharma company is aghast. It is understandable that they want to gather more information on myocarditis, as that didn’t start being recorded as a 12-18 adverse event until after the pediatric trial began.
This all said: and I could just walk away, but given the support I’d gotten before, I feel the need to share; this will be my last post. Unfortunately this board is not a safe space for me as I struggling with infertility and I just simply can’t be here anymore. I don’t want to make anyone feel bad, but 3 pages of guessing if someone is going to birth a boy or a girl in the middle of a Covid thread just really fucking sucks and I can’t do this anymore.
I wish you all the best. Truly.
