Augh. I was really hoping for late September/early October. This article seems to say the FDA is asking for 4 to 6 months of data instead of the 2 months they wanted for adults. But in the meantime, tons of kids will be in school without masks. Why does it feel like the kids always get screwed? I want to hear the 4-6 months of follow up from a named FDA official before I believe that. I can understand that under different circumstances but with the variants rapidly evolving and the CDC guidance being bastardized, Im hesitant to believe it when the pharma companies are still saying that they’re going to ask for immediate authorization. Of course the FDA does not need to grant it, but with current approvals in adults and older teens with 2 months of follow up, I’m very 🤔 about it.

Our school board just had a meeting wherein they stated that come fall, all y5/k-12 students will be required to mask regardless of vaccination status. Huzzah! I really hope they hold to that.

We can't do virtual learning unless we have a documented medical reason. I doubt I could get one, and my kids would be terrible at it anyways. All this uncertainty just sucks.

I need to order DD (9) some more masks. She only needed a few because we didn't go anywhere, but will definitely need more for school in the fall. Any recommendations?

Our neighboring county health department has announced masks should be worn indoors again (unless you’re in a workplace and know everyone is vaccinated). So the backslide is starting, exactly one month after the governor lifted the mask mandate. I was shocked to see LA announce it. I legit didn’t think we’d see another mandate after everything reopened and freedom Americans.

And LA is requiring them indoors again as of Sunday. Not good news. :::checks upcoming school start dates:::: This is such deja vu with last year. Schools out for summer, everyone goes crazy, wait oh fuck school. Except this time people are caring less about the children.

Averaging 1,100 daily in the last week. Nothing like e peak but still…they’ve got to get this in check.

Parents hella worried about their children and somehow right now it’s fuck them kids. I don’t get it. I haven’t been emotional and mentally right with all of it.

I feel like the only person on both sides of family paying attention to Covid and variants and I am struggling and need to dump it out here.
There is a bbq on MHs side this weekend. I don't want to go, but then he feels hurt about not seeing family. My SIL just posted pictures of her 2 kids too young to be vaccinated unmasked at an indoor play place from today. They are planning to hire some person to come sing.
I had planned that we would just stay outside and continue to avoid being indoors with others but now I just feel that is not enough.
When things were looking bright and before all the no mask nonsense, I booked a vacation for end of this month. All traveling by car and outdoor activities, but now I feel anxious about the decision or what risk going to this bbq places us with.
I also had booked a trip with a friend in a month. I feel bad for canceling but I just think how will I not get Covid right now with the rate it's increasing again.
Just like many of you said, I can't believe we are in this place again.
ETA: I am of course anxious about school in August, but I am pretending that will all be fine at the moment while I whine about extended family and vacations instead.

I’m sorry orangebird2020. Personally I’m only comfortable having DS at gatherings outside with other vaccinated people, which I know is extra but with the variants I’m pretty ok with being extra. Personally that bbq would be a no go for me. I know it sucks. We also have a trip to LA planned for mid August and lol no that is not happening. I bought the tickets in December hoping it would safe enough by then, but alas. Anyway just commiserating. I get it.

This article helped me a little. I understand that this article feels controversial but all of the numbers are well cited. For me, I do not feel that everything is fine and we should drop precautions. But I do have to remind myself of actual risk and how I navigate it every day. This journalist is not a science denier, much the opposite. I think any death of a child is too many and masking and vaccines are going to help get us over this but I also am reassured by the reminder that actual risk is very low to our children and that is factually a good thing. nymag.com/intelligencer/2021/07/the-kids-were-safe-from-covid-the-whole-time.html

lizblue, thank you for that - it made me relax a bit after the news that the vaccine won't be approved for under 12s until mid-winter.

I needed that article this morning lizblue. My son's pre-k just sent an email announcing that next week, masks for 3+ will be encouraged but not required. I am getting a little panicky. He only has until Sept 1 and then he is done there and starts K on Sept 8. I hope we can get through the month with all the kids still mostly wearing masks. I really hope the school district keeps a mask requirement starting in the fall for elementary schools since there is no way any kid is age eligible by then. No announcement has been made yet. I think they will be required on the school bus for sure since its considered transportation and my son will be taking the bus, so it seems silly to wear it there but not in the school. Aghhh

I'm bummed. I was able to get us timed entry tickets to see the dinos at the Natural History museum for July 25th. They are stopping timed entry/entry limits on the 20th. Now I'm not sure if we'll feel comfortable going. Ugh. So close!

We apparently lost all our kid masks- where do they go?! Into the sock purgatory?? Anyway, I got these and they fit my (99.9%ile) 7 year old very well. Has anyone seen any information about Delta transmission outdoors? We've become pretty comfortable not wearing masks outdoors anymore unless we are in a crowded area but we pretty much just avoid those in general. But now I'm wondering if the kids should be wearing them or if it's still a pretty low chance outdoors.
