addymac You're not the only one thinking that. It's come up in every single conversation I've had about it today.

Maybe the outrage at the sentencing will inspire legislative change in sentencing guidelines because that is where this problem particularly lies. But with our GOP controlled senate right now, I find it unlikely.

I think someone here recommended Dr. Kendi's podcast Be Anti-Racist.
I would encourage a listen especially to the episode with Heather McGhee called The Zero-Sum Myth: We're Divided, We're Conquered All I keep thinking about this week is how have we had people in powerful positions that make such harmful and pretty gross decisions. How were these schools that have been in the news for indigenous children allowed. How was the idea of taking children from their homes even brought up let alone so widely accepted or ignored when it didn't directly impact our daily life. What else are we ignoring today that should be loudly spoken out against and rejected.
I need to watch the videos from MVPs visit today to see if the housing of immigrant children was resolved.
Deb Haaland being the US Secretary of Interior felt absolutely impactful before and even more so now as she investigates the role the department once had in these awful boarding schools.
Mainly a vent and ramble as I just can't believe how easily people have been mistreated and all there is to learn and not let it be forgotten.

I'm currently really in my own feelings because we had a huge mission project in elementary school, and I.... don't really know how to feel about what we were taught. I'm also feeling real pissed about the Alamo. oh, I was supposed to go on a mission trip to Haiti over easter break when I was 16 but ended up getting the flu and couldn't travel. Did the whole 24 hour fasting raising $2k bullshit to "make a sustainable difference", ie prosthelytize to orphans and the impoverished as a call to the Gospel to "make disciples of all nations". The Haitians were desperately seeking Jesus! LOL no. What I needed to do was hand a check to a professional organization. But, ya know, then a bunch of "selfless" white Catholic kids couldn't bring home photos with our new friends so we could show how great we were!!!!
I think it depends on the kind of mission trip it is. If "all" you were supposed to do was prosthelytize, then yeah, no. But most of the mission trips I hear about are going and taking on a specific project to help out the community. My cousins went down to NOLA after Katrina to help clean out homes that had been damaged and just needed to be gutted and continued to go on a mission trip to help out with rebuilding there every summer for years. I can really respect that kind of mission trip.

To me if any amount of time is spent proselytizing it's a mission trip. Doesn't have to be the only focus. Doesn't have to be all. I've heard of great volunteer work some people have done on mission trips that included a side of Jesus, which for many people then demeans the volunteer work. Most mission trips are just to fulfill white savior dreams. Sounds like what your cousins did was just volunteer work and that is great. Has nothing to do with church, just being decent humans.

And Catholic mission trips to Haiti, as I have learned as an adult, generally do more harm than good. Sending money to their local contractors to build schools or to boost a local economy that the US has pushed into poverty is more beneficial than a bunch of white kids who have never swung a hammer but look good on magazine covers. And there was absolutely a discussion of how we can bring the Word to those who needed Jesus. It sounds more like the cousin situation was more of a habitat for humanity trip.

The only mission trip I went on with my youth group was to the Rocky Mountains and we spent a week camping in the mountains and cleaning off trails to help the park rangers after a huge storm. We had our own bible studies and stuff during the day but we talked to literally no other humans lol. It wasn’t until I was in college that I realized other places did more of the proselytizing trips. But I was part of a super liberal and chill Lutheran church so there’s that.

This is awesome. There's a lot of farmland that just isn't profitable/ producing as it used to, and utilizing it for carbon-capture is brilliant. I'd love to eventually see full-scale carbon-capturing happening like they're planning in Scotland. That this technology exists boggles my mind. www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-42193432

I heard a legal expert that felt the reason Chauvins statement was so short is because they are close to a deal on the federal charges. Otherwise he would have had a more compelling statement today to try to reduce his sentence. Oh that's interesting. I only saw about 90 seconds of yesterday's hearing but Chauvin said something to the effect of "more information will be coming out soon" and I was very angry about it

This is making me ragey. If workers know they are in high demand and are using that to leverage better working conditions and compensation isn't that just supply and demand? I thought we were supposed to be all rah rah Capitalism? Fuxk this. 'In any case, the squeeze has given many job seekers the confidence that they can push for higher wages or wait until employers come around. “They know how in demand they are,” said Angelic Hobart, a client service manager at American Staffing who occupied a table at the Maryland Heights job fair. “And I think that is being taken advantage of.” She said she had dozens of manufacturing, warehouse, sales, office and technology positions to fill. But public benefits have made people “very complacent,” she said. And sometimes “their pay expectations are way over what their skill level is.” Where Jobless Benefits Were Cut, Jobs Are Still Hard to Fill nyti.ms/35XFsR3

Related anecdote: we were in my H's hometown recently and he noted that a job posting was offering the same wage he made in that job in 1999. Come on. People can't survive on these wages. We called people essential workers when it suited us, it's well past time to treat them as essential.

And yes, I understand that raising wages can lead to increased consumer prices and that matters but LET. PEOPLE. EAT.

Admittedly we are a Honda family, but this sucks Yeah this is not great. I just got a brand new Highlander and we are on a list for the new Sienna. I don’t love supporting that but I also feel less conflicted than I would about eating Chik Fil A or shopping at Hobby Lobby, both of which feel much more avoidable. I like how reliable Toyota is and have built a relationship with the dealership I go to now. It’s not a great excuse but oh well. I can’t be perfect in my purchasing. Hell I still use Amazon a lot.
