Excuse this post, because I'm real up in my feelings about this. I swear on the grave of my father, so help me God, I will never again step foot in a Roman Catholic Church. I am ashamed to have ever been called Catholic. I'm horrified that I was unaware of these abuses, because in the Church, bad things are swept under rugs and hidden. This Church has committed the worst of abuses, and are the worst of humanity. If I prayed anymore, I would wish every hope upon hope that the Church would burn to the ground. The hypocrisy of acting Godly and as though they are without sin, while they abused and tortured children. I'll cast this first stone, because I own my sins. Fuck the Roman Catholic Church. I'm currently really in my own feelings because we had a huge mission project in elementary school, and I.... don't really know how to feel about what we were taught. I'm also feeling real pissed about the Alamo.

I am watching. The victim statements are just heartbreaking. That judge better do the right thing and give the maximum sentence. It’s the very least his family deserves.

I could not roll my eyes hard enough at the murderer's mother. She said nothing about the actual victims, including George, which is just gross, and trying to make it seem like her murdering son has been railroaded and this isn't who he is (which yes, IT IS), just take a fucking seat, sis.

And a big STFU to the defense attorney talking about "what ifs?" Um, what about if he hadn't knelt on George's back and kept him there? What if he hadn't ignored George's pleas that he couldn't breathe? What if he had listened and gotten him medical help?
And citing statistics of all the murdering, racist motherfuckers who got off with a proverbial slap on the wrist - it was horrible then and it will be even more horrible and make the verdict hollow if he gets anything less than the maximum.

I'm also feeling real pissed about the Alamo. oh, I was supposed to go on a mission trip to Haiti over easter break when I was 16 but ended up getting the flu and couldn't travel. Did the whole 24 hour fasting raising $2k bullshit to "make a sustainable difference", ie prosthelytize to orphans and the impoverished as a call to the Gospel to "make disciples of all nations". The Haitians were desperately seeking Jesus! LOL no. What I needed to do was hand a check to a professional organization. But, ya know, then a bunch of "selfless" white Catholic kids couldn't bring home photos with our new friends so we could show how great we were!!!!

I believe some schools closed as recently as the 1990s. Not ancient history by a long shot. There’s definitely survivors and descendants still living. Oh absolutely. I just meant that some people can't be prosecuted because they're long dead. The ones still living need to be held responsible. ETA: In the US, parents couldn't even legally refuse to send their kids to the boarding schools until the late 70's. This definitely isn't ancient history. I didn't meant to imply it was and I am sincerely sorry I did. Oh I didn’t think you did. Most of the individual perpetrators are probably mostly dead. But I was surprised to learn how recently these places were operating so I wanted to share that. I think all of us in colonized places have a duty to right this wrong. I think that will involve a long process of healing and reparations. It needs to be fully uncovered and investigated, and I agree the government needs to take some of the responsibility.

I’ll be interested in reading the memorandum. I’m not surprised he didn’t get the full 30.

He still has the federal civil rights trial, too, right? That could add more time to his sentence.
ETA: Not an attorney; just that I remember there being talk of federal charges for the civil rights violations.

Hopefully not, but I can see that happening.

I’ll be interested in reading the memorandum. I’m not surprised he didn’t get the full 30. When would the public have access to the memorandum? I’m curious why not 30. And also why is 30 the max he could have gotten?

And also why is 30 the max he could have gotten? Theoretically it’s public the second it’s e-filed through the court system. However you need to pay for the public access somewhere to read it. Usually the press gets copies of that kind of stuff and quotes it like they do complaints but I don’t know what they will do here. I technically have immediate access to it through my work because I can view basically any court documents in MN with my login. But it’s against the rules to look up cases that I don’t need to through work so I won’t/can’t.

That memo is interesting. So the sentence guidelines called for 128-180 months, and the judge added to it because of aggravating factors (particularly cruel, abuse of power). Prosecution argued that two others should be added, children being present and that he acted as part of a group, but the court did not extend time for those factors.
And OmG, Chauvins lawyer argued that abuse of power isn’t relevant here because that typically only applies in cases of sexual misconduct or domestic abuse.
Go read this. They did a good job showing the math.

I heard a legal expert that felt the reason Chauvins statement was so short is because they are close to a deal on the federal charges. Otherwise he would have had a more compelling statement today to try to reduce his sentence.

So they we’re saying a bit ago with good behavior he could be out in 15? 🤬 Yeah, I heard he's eligible for parole after serving 2/3 of his sentence.

Don’t worry, I already know I’m a terrible person.
