I think Senator Sinema personifies toxic white feminism for me so that’s part of my reaction.

The building collapse is so just awful. Seeing this makes my heart jump into my throat. When you see the building now, you don't get a good idea of how big it actually was. So horrifying.

The condo collapse is just so awful and tragic. I keep thinking of the people and animals that could be trapped inside or dead and it makes me really upset. I hate my brain always goes to the little ones and pets.

51 people unaccounted for in Miami, one death confirmed. I see one first responder with a dog on CNN right now. They're talking with the FDNY commissioner who dealt with 9/11 and those rescue efforts. That video is unbelievable - and the weather isn't good there either. What the rescue people have to deal with is just unimaginable. My grandpa was one of the first water sheriffs on scene at the 35W bridge collapse here back in 2007. Devastation like that never leaves you when you see it.

Per Biden FEMA is down and ready to move in FL as soon as requested.
This was the last bit of his press conf on the infrastructure bill. MVP reminded him to say something. And she is looking fantastic in a light blue suit today.

DH and I were talking about this. How it reminded me of the OKC bombing and DH of 9/11.

Same byjove! I kept getting flashes of OKC when I see the pictures. It's so heartbreaking and mind boggling. Like I really can't comprehend how a building just goes down like that. I saw the surveillance video and it looks like how a demolition is done.

So our area is in a hiring crisis. We are a shore town, so usually have tons of seasonal jobs. This year places, rides, arcades are closed because they can’t find people to work. In the past the majority of those jobs were held by high school kids. Literally it was turn 16 and work at the boardwalk/beach. I don’t know what the actual answer is. My friends went to the boardwalk and half the rides/games were closed because of lack of staff.

I would be interested to find out if the teens that would have worked those jobs are just not joining the workforce due to virus concerns/vaccine hesitancy/lag period for full effectiveness or because they are able to get ‘better’ job in more traditional retail and food/beverages locations. Our friend’s son turned 16 this week; he went out to put out feelers when school ended last week to see what the market would be like. Of the retail and restaurants he hit the answer was the same: we can’t touch you at 15. Come back the day you turn 16, put in an application and we will basically hire you on the spot. So he went and put in a bunch of applications to see who will offer the highest hourly rate.

trueblueI definitely think it will take years to recover but I am curious for the root cause especially with jobs held primarily by teenagers. There is a division of people in our area that fully believe they jobs can’t be filled because of unemployment/socialism 🙄🤬 But with jobs primarily held by teens (who don’t get unemployment) what is the psychological basis for being short staffed. One of DDs friends went to the boardwalk and a lot of things were closed because of staffing.

I've been in meetings all day but that building collapse is the stuff of nightmares. I also don't think my brain can handle questioning the soundness of structures that we have to be in/on/under day in and day out. I just shut down.

Here, which is also seasonal/somewhat tourist based, I am seeing a lot of places close saying it’s because of lack of workers but if you dig a bit deeper through reviews and the like the businesses were on the ropes well before the pandemic hit or they just never recovered from 2020. Which creates another issue of pandemonium over the whole issue.

The mayor of Surfside has signed an emergency declaration and there is on the governors desk waiting to be signed so FEMA can come in.

About half the staffing is usually filled by young adults from Europe on short term work visas for the summer that aren’t available this year. We’re lucky that our neighborhood pool is staffed almost entirely by swim team alums.

Gov doesnt think its necessary for the Feds to step in. She made the comment the county has everything it needs right now.

There was fairly big group behind Biden and he started talking, stopped turned around and asked them if they had chairs. Yes they do, Well then sit down you dont need to be standing. I asked one guy once and he told me he didnt have a damn chair. You got a chair? sit down.

An amusement park near us is running into that issue as well, to the extent that they've been having to close various days of the week due to lack of staff. They used to have a large international work force and just couldn't get people over for this season. They were advertising for workers last month. I've also wondered about the big overnight camps as well. I worked one for a couple of summers and they had a significant percentage of international workers. Just another weird ripple effect.

I truly cannot understand why one would deny help because of who is in charge. It makes no sense. This is a tragic accident - why would one want to make it worse by holding back aid. Ugh.

I don't know if other areas are doing this but our district is offering an extended school year because of covid. It's optional but a large percentage of high schoolers signed up.
