Ugh i just saw an article that six retirement homes in Portugal have active outbreaks of the new variant. Every single person has been vaccinated fully before getting sick. Two fully vaccinated elderly person's have died. And sorry not trying to scare anyone but that shook me. The FIL of one of my coworkers now has covid and is in a medically-induced coma at the hospital on a ventilator - after he was fully vaccinated. I know that nothing is 100% but fucking yikes at being one of the people in that small percentage. I'm also a bit shook by it.

I wonder if for some reason the vaccine didn't work for him. It seems that the vaccines are less effective on people aged 70+ from what I am seeing. Where I live, deaths usually get reported along with age group and vaccine status of the deceased. (Deaths in Atlantic Canada are not a daily occurrence so they get reported in detail, often with a press conference to express condolences.) A couple of people have died after receiving both doses, and it is usually in the 80+ age group. People have died after a single dose, and that is generally 60+. When a death under 60 is reported, it is usually someone who is unvaccinated. The Delta variant is more vaccine resistant, so as it becomes dominant, I expect there will be more deaths of people who are fully vaccinated but have weaker immune systems overall.

I just read a report today from UK data that Pfizer is 96% effective at preventing hospitalization from the Delta variant and AZ is 92% effective. So they still seem to be doing what they're supposed to do, it's just that when you vaccinate such a massive number of people, those leftover 4% or 8% are going to add up to seemingly big numbers.

Yeah that makes sense. That's definitely frightening.

Masks only for unvaxxed people still. "Go out, live life" Go to concerts, games, shopping, out to eat, etc.
Oof. That sounds like a lot after everything that was this past almost year and a half.

State of Emergency expires tomorrow and will not be extended. CDC mask requirements stay. Local governments can do whatever they want So what expires then? Everything except CDC masking guidelines; so masks for unvaxxed people, but local governments can make their own decisions too. So whatever local government wants to kick, they essentially can.

State mandates for quarantines and remaining restrictions. That said, counties can do whatever they want. Back to the home rule rule. ETA- the SoE allows him to utilize the National Guard. It expiring it changes how he can utilize it. The state testing sites are all supposed be closed after Friday, and state vaccination sites won’t be open much longer

Well, while I personally feel the reward outweighs the risk for most, I suspect this finding won't do much to drive up vaccination rates for many young folks, especially males. A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) safety panel said there is a "likely association" of mild heart inflammation in adolescents and young adults after they were vaccinated with an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine. link

I tend to believe hiding data will just come back and bite you in the end. Better to get ahead of the story and hopefully make sure the data is understood in context, IMO.

So stupid questions if the quarantines end what happens if you test positive for Covid? Can you just go about life as normal? And I’m assuming the mask mandate following cdc means that summer schools currently have to mask?

Honestly it would make me pause to give my son the vaccine if he was eligible until there was more behind what they think is causing it. It wouldn’t make me not get it at all but I’d need more information to feel comfortable with my choice.

This article went into a little more detail about ramifications. I don't know - after that pause we had last spring for J&J, it never seemed to be as popular as everyone had hoped, or that's the feeling I got. And the issues with the one manufacturing plant didn't help. 'Dr. Doran Fink of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Vaccines Research and Review said the agency would soon issue additional warnings to clinicians and vaccine recipients, particularly those with a history of heart inflammation, after consulting on language with the CDC. “Based on available data, a warning statement in the fact sheets for health care providers, vaccine recipients and caregivers is warranted in this situation,” Fink said.' link

And I’m assuming the mask mandate following cdc means that summer schools currently have to mask? Yes to the quarantine. No more tracking, no more isolating. Anything under the many revisions to EO 202 are gone. CDC actually does not require masks in schools. It is recommended indoors, but not required. Recommendations mean nothing in a regulatory sense and don’t have to be followed. My pediatrician sent a notice that they will still require masks in the office, based off the CDC recommendations to mask in medical facilities.

So basically my kids could get a cold and still go to daycare/school now because what difference would it make if they tested positive? Isn’t that like basically saying at this point we expect any unvaccinated kids to be exposed and get this virus?

I saw a really interesting graphic today. Hopefully I can embed it correctly. The blue curve are the numbers of new infections in Germany since March 1, 2020, and the orange curve is the number of deaths. In the first and second waves you can see how the deaths correspond almost exactly proportionately to the cases. In the third wave (as vaccines finally started to get going and most 80+ patients were vaxed), you can see that the number of deaths didn't nearly follow the curve.
