Anyone had an amazing cake recently? I have no idea what to bake for my birthday this year and am looking for inspiration. I will make it df/gf, but can adapt almost anything. I made a crepe cake last year. I've made this cake a few times df and it is heaven. www.notquitenigella.com/2016/02/23/earl-grey-london-fog-cake/

dc2london I can't remember if this was the thread we talked about it but I got my food sensitivity results back. Thankfully I only tested in the "moderate" range for one food and "mild" for 8 others. Nothing in the high range. My moderate food was cinnamon, which is a bummer because I do love me some cinnamon toast lol. But I do notice that I usually have a gassy stomach afterward so that makes sense. The other mild reactions were not all that surprising to me, with things like brewers yeast, bakers yeast, bell pepper, wheat, sesame, coffee (made me chuckle since I've never had a cup in my life), and rye. All things I'm probably not going to eliminate completely because I mean, I love things that have yeast in them and I love wheat and sesame, lol. But good to be aware of going forward.

willow, I am also sensitive to cinnamon (and like a gazillion foods), but if you only tested in the moderate, you may have good luck taking it out for a while and slowly introducing it back in. I have also switched to ceylon cinnamon, which is usually better tolerated than regular cinnamon which has the toxin coumarin (which isn't going to kill you in regular amounts of course, but if you are sensitive to cinnamon can be aggravating). I also find mild and most moderate foods I can tolerate in smaller amounts for the most part, but if I am really struggling with my digestion, taking them all out usually makes a big difference to reset (like a couple of days). I can't tolerate any mustard or curry when I am struggling and just try to avoid them. Also if a food is cooked you might tolerate it better than raw or unprocessed (like I test high to almonds- almond milk is fine for me). I know you say you aren't interested in dietary restriction, but low fodmap also makes a difference for me and is also helpful when things are really bad. Some of my other non-obvious high stuff are stone fruits, cranberry, celery, lettuce, flax seeds, etc. My insides are a wreck.

Lovetit because my GP says that trying FODMAPS would be the next step for sorting out my IBS. Though increasing the dosage of my SSRI is helping a lot right now, so hopefully it won’t be necessary for awhile. If I have to go that route, I may ask to pick your brain about it.

byjove Minerva I will be ok eliminating cinnamon for the most part, I actually don't eat it too much but I do enjoy it when I do. I might try lessening the amount of bell pepper I cook with since it was on my higher "mild" reactions but probably not a ton, haha because I just love bell peppers. And I'll be more aware of where wheat and sesame and yeast and stuff is in my daily planning.

byjove willow did you learn about these sensitivities from one of those tests you can buy online, or through your doc?

easier I ordered my test from Everlywell. It was pretty smooth. Once I got the test, I put it in the mail on Friday and got the results this morning via their website.

I have to show up at 8 am for US District Court jury duty tomorrow. I was really hopeful my answers to the jury questionnaire would have disqualified me because I have direct experience with the subject matter. It’s supposed to be a 3 week case and I just cannot.

Aw man! Could they still release you tomorrow? I’ve never been called to that level of jury duty.

Aw man! Could they still release you tomorrow? I’ve never been called to that level of jury duty. I assume so. But I’m nervous because it said they are bringing in the smallest group of potential jurors they can to seat a jury due to covid. So I don’t know if the odds are in my favor. I’ve never been called for anything other than county or city criminal Court. This is very serious business. And of course it’s in the middle of the city so I’m playing the do I drive or BART game in my head. I’m not against being on a jury, but it’s a really bad time for me. I have 3 direct report positions and 1 is vacant right now and the other 2 are possibly going to be soon.

Local news has been a rollercoaster of sad, unimaginable and decreasing hope. It is everywhere. Spoiler because children involved in separate 2 incidents. Over the weekend, a mom was posting on every local group: mom groups, babysitting, b/s/t, marketplace, etc. She was posting to see if anyone had seen or would look out for her children: 5 & 3. Comments were awful and she was, rightfully, defended before the offensive comments deleted. EXH was supposed to call (court ordered) with the kids, but hadn’t for a few days. She doesn’t live locally and couldn’t just go check herself. Police attempted well-checks and they were unanswered. Sunday after the police did 2nd check, upon her request, a friend went to check. The friend found the front door unlocked and then found the children dead. Thanks to big brother cameras in Reno (20 hours away!), he was located in CA. He is being brought back here.
We are now well past 48 hours for an Autistic 11yo who walked out of school around 12 on Monday. He had been searching ‘how to hide from the police’ and ‘how to not be spotted by the police’ on his computer recently. From the news and what the PD has stated, this has happened before, but never this long and that is why they alerted the public. Please pray or send good thoughts or whatever that Ryan is found.

clucky I heard about that first case because of him being caught here. That’s so sad. We’ve had a string of local bad/sad news here lately too. Including a fatal shooting a couple of nights ago about 4 blocks from my home. They arrested two teenagers for murder. Ugh.

jaygee it is so much, those babies were the same ages as my little 2. When I went to search for an update, before seeing the sad news, I saw her postings from when the oldest was breastfeeding and my heart ached. Then it broke when the news came in - which she clarified in a local post. That is so sad about your local news too. Such unnecessary loss for everyone involved.

Jfc I’m sorry clucky. That’s a lot of sad and worrisome news. God I hate people. jaygee hope you get DQ’d!! Not even gonna click on the cicada article. Nope. Self care 2021. Had an amazing massage today where the pain in my shoulders and arms was gone for most of the day. Best I’ve felt in weeeeeks. Then in PT she realigned my right hip and oh my god the lack of pain was immediate and just amazing. I felt so good physically after this morning.

I was excused from jury duty. It was kind of an exhausting experience due to the nature of the case (IVF/ART patients suing a cold storage manufacturer for a malfunction that caused them to lose their eggs or embryos) so I’m glad I wasn’t selected for the jury. I’m also glad I don’t have to miss 3 weeks of work.

jaygee I’m glad you didn’t get selected. Me too. In hindsight I should have just written on my form that I couldn’t do it. I like to remain open minded. But they said there would be witness testimony from the plaintiffs about their infertility paths and I would have suffered through that.

Glad you were excused, jaygee. I don't think I could have served on that jury, even if I somehow managed to survive voir dire.

jaygee That would be a very difficult jury to serve on. The thought of what happened to those families breaks my heart, that their chance at babies was destroyed outside of their control. Oof. I don't think I'd be able to be impartial just knowing that one vague description of the case.
