@clay I pick up pots and decorative baskets at thrift stores. There’s also lots of vintage sellers on Etsy that have cool old pots and baskets for sale. I miss going to thrift stores. Well any home goods type stores really. Eta: and obviously I would go if I had a real need but I don’t so it's better to skip the shopping trips. I just miss browsing. I miss my thrifting trips too. ☹️

I was just gifted 3 tomato plants, and I already have some tomato seeds planted.
I might be made of tomato by summer's end.

I had 12 tomato plants last year and definitely need like...4 times that. On the other hand, I had 6 squash and 6 zucchini and can’t even look at zucchini bread anymore 🤣

There are plant care apps that prompt you on what to do and when! I have no idea why it never occurred me to look for something like this. We may be past this, but hello, I am you and you are me. Just last weekend I downloaded the Planta app for my three houseplants, one of whom is not doing super great, and it's been awesome. They have like, every plant and what kind of care it needs when and where and how. Then it notifies me when it's time to water each and reminds me to check the soil first to make sure it's not still wet and if it is gives the option to snooze. I love it.

Hello! I haven't been here in days and of course there's now a gardening thread when I spent all weekend contemplating my garden!
I used to be a super brown thumb, kill everything all the time. I'm slowly (sloooooowly) getting better. I'd say I'm more of an ecru thumb now.
I did a fall planting of euphorbia characias which are doing great, hostas which are very dead (but I hear they'll come back?), a NW fern which is doing great, and a fuchsia which is half dead half alive.
I'm also trying my hand at a raised garden bed this year and we have a flower bed filled with bulbs that I hate and best me every year, one mercurtian mallow, one clematis, and four million calendula.
We're 8b so it's just about time to get out and start digging.

So apparently I will now be needing to plant some blackberries. I have these thorny starts that were gifted to me. Not going to lie, I’m panicking a bit and don’t know what I was thinking. Would this be spring fever?

My arborvitae arrived today, so this afternoon is going to be a big push to get the ground tilled, mixed with the new soil, and ready for them to be planted. I wanted to work on prepping things yesterday, but I was on fumes from only 2hrs of sleep and still had a sore shoulder, so today is the day.
While I kill time before picking up Dd2, I'm watching The Big Flower Fight on Netflix. I love it. It's the sculptural garden equivalent to Great British Baking Show.

Hello gardening friends. So we just bought plants last weekend for our backyard pots, including a potted hibiscus and icelandic poppies, and then some more typical annuals. It's going to be in the 40s the next two days and we *might* see freezing Fri and Sat am. Do I cover them in plastic? Try to bring them inside? The hisbiscus doesn't like it much below 50 according to the tag, but I don't think it was getting any special treatment at the garden center. Clearly freezing is going to be an issue if that happens.

If you can bring them inside for definite freezing. otherwise put them close to the house and cover them in the late afternoon with something like a towel. I never use plastic uncover them when the sun comes up and it's above freezing. also water them well helps to keep them from totally freezing

These spoiled plants getting to come inside 😂 I’m nervous for the cineraria- the purple daisy kind of looking plant. A squirrel keeps attacking it and nibbling it’s leaves. Also digging in the pot. I’ve had to refill the dirt several times 😡

blurnette989 awesome gardens! I’m very jealous of the space. I’m off to buy pansies for my outdoor pots, I don’t see any more below freezing temps in our forecast. I’m so excited for some actual outdoor gardening!

I am not a fan of azaleas (they are literally everywhere here) and this house had 3 rather sad looking ones out front. I finally replaced them with some Purple Daydream Loropetalum. Our house is gray, the purple looks phenomenal. I am v excited here.
Never have I been so happy to pull stumps as when I removed the azaleas.

Well, the blackberry bush stems/starters/sticks with roots have been planted into some pots, guess we shall see how this goes. My plant loving neighbor didn’t tell me that I was off my rocker, so there is hope!

I was kid free with nice weather yesterday so I got 15 bags of raised bed soil (which still wasn't enough, of course), three strawberry starts, two chive starts, and 8 bags of hazelnut shells to hopefully deter the neighborhood cats.
I also put lettuce, cucumber, and spinach seeds in so we'll see how that goes.
Tomatillos/tomatoes and peppers will be in a couple weeks.
And my hostas are coming back! I did it! And my euphorbia looks great so far.

I think we are in the clear for hardier plants, so I'm excited to get to work! My perennial seeds went bananas in just 5 days, so I need to do some transplanting! Ready for sun, warm and green!

Planted some mint, chamomile, rosemary, and lemon balm in some pots yesterday. We'll see how it goes. We're planning on setting them outside for spring/summer.

Planted a rose bush in the empty irrigation spot.
Got MORE tomato seeds (Easter gifts for kids are just more work for me) that I'm not sure I'll plant this year. Also some string bean and coneflower seeds.
I have some forget-me-not seeds I want to plant but I'm not sure how they'll do here. I don't have much to offer them in terms of shade and it's 90-105 here starting soon and lasting through September. But I love them and they'll remind me of childhood in AK. Hmm.

I say give it a try, maybe in a pot or north facing area wher you can baby them.

I think the soil’s warm enough here to plant bean seeds, so I’m gonna do that today. Maybe sunflowers too. It’s very springy here and I just want to be outside all day.

What apps do you recommend for reminders? I'd love one that covers things like when I need to prune, fertilize, etc. And I have no indoor plants, I need it for my herb garden, raspberries, currants, elderberries, roses, and other outdoor plants like that. I looked for the Planta app mentioned upthread but couldn't find it 🤔
Eta: just realized I couldn't find it bc it's for iOS. Anyone have a recommendation for Android apps?

I'm on the hunt for a similar app. Also I just learned what elderflower looks like, which is hilarious. Made me realize it's everywhere here and I'm going to make some cordial this week!

Yep, we often get elderflower syrup as a hostess present in the summer, but I want some bushes of my own
