So my 2 year old has been enrolled in a gymnastics course for two quarters now. We have decided not to enroll him on a third because the class is just too structured for two year olds. They want the kids to do an obstacle course but the course has a slide and of course every kid only wants to do the slide or my kid really wants to do the rings but they are only on the balance beam...that sort of thing. So we want to enroll him in a different class and I was wondering what types of classes your 2 year olds have taken and which ones have been most successful?

We do gymnastics also, but we go to The Little Gym (I think they're nationwide), and they are not that structured, and it's worked really well for my almost-2 year old. They normally do two "skills" throughout the class, and they do their "warm up" and goodbye song as a group, but otherwise, it's pretty much free time to go play on whatever they want.
When he was younger, we did swim lessons that he loved as a baby, and we tried tot soccer league before gymnastics, though I think that was a bit advanced for him (but he was only around 18 months when we tried it). We're considering switching back to trying soccer again in the fall now that he's able to follow directions a little bit better.

This sounds more like what we expected when we signed him up and I think he would love that. But no. Every class my husband spends chasing him around and we always have at least one major meltdown. It's not fun and this second quarter we always want to skip them instead of go.

We just do swim. The soccer "classes" at 2 around here are just running around a field and we can do that with him for freeeeeeeee.

Gymboree was great for my ds from 18 months until around 2.5. It's not very structured at all. In fact, you are encouraged to step back and let your kid take the lead. We all really enjoyed it. He just turned 3 and is ready for more structure/ skill based activities. He's currently enrolled in something called Jump Bunch. A teacher/ coach comes to daycare once a week and teaches them a new sport. Ds is also doing soccer starting in June.

If you have Music Together where you are, I can't recommend them enough!!! Perfect for age 2-3. Also, swimming lessons. My daughter didn't learn a ton, but she LOVED them!

We do swimming and then gym and music classes. They gym is similar to the Gymboree class we were doing before we moved it's just a local business instead of a national chain. And when we signed up they were having a 2 for 1 deal so we picked music too. Once she starts preschool in September we'll drop the gym and music since she'll be getting that kind of enrichment there.

We did two classes through our county Parks and Rec dept this spring. One was similar to a gym experience- singing in a circle, a parachute, a very simple obstacle course, etc. The other was a "cooking" class. The cooking class went the best, I think because the teacher seemed more chill and because there was food involved.
I'm also looking into Tinkergarten classes for the fall but nothing's been posted yet. I've heard good things.

My kiddo loves her Little Gym class. I just signed her up for summer.
She also loved swim, the 2 sessions she took. I agree Music Together is really fun. And if you can find a Zumbini class where you are that might be a hit. Music and dancing. There are very simple routines but the instructors I know I very laid back and if your kid wants to jump up and down and run in circles they are happy with that.

We've done swim lessons. I think we're going to try soccer soon. I really want to give V more opportunities to interact with other kids in play situations outside of daycare, and we have a great indoor program locally.

We've recently started at My Gym and so far she loves it. We are starting swim in June. We also go to library storytime once a week and that's helped her learn structure and she gets to play with different toys at the end.

I want to sign DS up for swimming lessons and gymnastics when he is old enough (he's 14m and they start at 18m).
We have tried music classes, but he is far to impatient. Which stinks, because he LOVES playing with instruments at our house.

We did gymnastics for a couple months and it was pretty much a free play. She liked it, but it was too far of a drive for such a short class. We did swim lessons last year and she's signed up to start next again next month. She'll be starting a ballet/tumbling class in July. I'm a little nervous about that one because it isn't a mommy & me type class, so we shall see how it goes.

It will just be me and E since M is starting pre-school.

This reminds me, I need to sign A up for some classes. I was thinking gymnastics, but she's only 2.5 so maybe too young still.

We just finished a Mommy and Me art class. It was a little structured, but the teacher was very flexible and had a nice variety of activities to keep the kids interested. She was also very understanding if someone needed to be up and moving around - which was often, because toddlers.

Mine just turned 3 and I'd be anxious about signing him up for anything but swimming at this point.

+1 to Little Gym - DS just turned 2 in March, and he loves it. Not too structured. We do swimming and soccer classes as well. Soccer is mostly just controlled chaos with a bunch of littles running around a grassy area, but DS has actually learned to kick goals, dribble the ball a little bit, and gained some new balance skills. It is so cute to see all the toddlers running around in their various soccer outfits and laughing. I'm glad we signed him up.

We took DD to one class at the kiddie gym and she just really isn't that into class participation. She basically spent 50 minutes walking up and down the her-size staircase. She wasn't interested in any of the other things to do, or the songs that the group was doing. I would take her to the open play time there, but they only have 4 hours of open play every week and none of them really fit into my schedule.

I took mine to the My Gym classes and he liked it but always wanted to do his own thing. I only paid for it for the open play that DH took him too while he was laid off.

For those who work full time, how do you find time for activities? We do swim now which is at 9am on a Saturday. I'm trying to figure out what else we can do that wont take up our entire weekend. I dont get home until 5:30 on weekdays so there is little time to do anything.

We also do Little Gym and love it! My 3 year old has been going since 5 months and DD2 started at about 9 months.
We've done Kindermusik in the past but not recently, I do want to try it with DD2 though.

I dont get home until 5:30 on weekdays so there is little time to do anything. Honestly, at this age, we only do the gymnastics and that's plenty for us. It's Saturday morning, so that leaves us Saturday afternoons and Sundays to plan things with friends, family etc. I need some time in the weekend to just be "us." And we're in a similar boat - during the week by the time we're all home and fed, there's only about an hour before we need to start winding DS down for bed. So between day care and his gymnastics, I really think DS is getting the socialization he needs for now and for me, personally, I have no desire to add in more activities until he gets older.

If I worked then I would consider daycare to be plenty of activity and would want to relax at home with my kids when I was off, especially for the one year old.

Down side on the days I work I don't get home till 1130 at night.
