For those who work full time, how do you find time for activities? We do swim now which is at 9am on a Saturday. I'm trying to figure out what else we can do that wont take up our entire weekend. I dont get home until 5:30 on weekdays so there is little time to do anything. We do Saturday classes. For my older kid though, I changed my work hours to get off at 4 and take him to baseball after school.

loves2read, we take a rughoppers class at the Y. They are supposed to do the skills, but like you said all the children want to do is run around and go down the slides. Last week R did well with, if he wanted to slide I told he we had to do a somersault 1st. And then he could go down the slide. We have also done toddler time at the Y which is a 30 mins class of simple large movement skills like running back and forth across the gym. And then it has some music that we dance to. We also do swim lessons which he is only doing really well at this year. R just turned 2.

This basically leads to not being able to take swim lessons because we can only take lessons on Wednesday or Thursday nights and they don't offer them at that time. Right now our schedules work well for babysitting (my husband watches them Saturday and Sunday, my parents Monday Tuesday, I have them Wednesday and Thursday and my mother in law takes them Friday) but it does make everything else difficult.

I apparently have a dissenting opinion on Little Gym. We went to the free first class and it was fine, nothing special, but fine. I thought the classes were comically expensive and they have a bad cancellation policy so we didn't sign up. I wish the Gymboree was closer bc I've heard good things and the rates are better there but it's far. We have a place space near by that's really nice and only $4 for free play i really just need like a regular meet up there.
We do swim and sometimes a baby sign and sing class and library story time, lately we haven't been doing much though, I really need to get back out there!

The one near us does. They are all during working hours but since you stay home with her, that may be an option.

Swim will be in the afternoon when it starts, but otherwise, we pay my mom to be the nanny so she takes M to daytime activities. She gets as worn out as the toddler at the My Gym! But my mom loves everything library and reading so her going to storytime and the used bookstore is a no brainer.

No, we used to go to this other play group but it's a lot of really little babies and when LO started walking it became kinda an issue. I have a local Meetup group... just got try and make it happen!

We miss all of the library activities and most other toddler-based activities in our area, as everything seems to only be offered during the week. Since we both teach and H will be home all summer with V (I teach summer school), we are looking to sign up for activities then, starting with soccer.

Thanks guys, I'm glad I'm not alone in trying to figure out when to do stuff with K. I get really salty when all the things I see around us are at 10am on a Tuesday. As she gets older, maybe I can ask fil to take her to more things. I really want her to do a martial art but in pretty sure the earliest we can do that around here is 3.

It seems to me that there's more offered as they're older and some stuff is just luck of the geographic draw. Keep your eyes open though, I've seen a couple library story times and Meet Up groups that have weekend activities so they do exist. Once my kid is a little older I plan on looking into the the weekend classes at Home Depot (I think Lowes used to do them but recently stopped) and I think some Michael's locations offer kids classes as well. I think they're usually $2-5 per class.

We just signed up for a music together class that starts in two weeks. We had done musikgarten before, but there wasn't much interest in the class so the teacher stopped offering it.
I still need to find something else for J to do, he has so much energy. I think we will probably do swim lessons through the park district this summer.

This sounds more like what we expected when we signed him up and I think he would love that. But no. Every class my husband spends chasing him around and we always have at least one major meltdown. It's not fun and this second quarter we always want to skip them instead of go. Ugh. This is exactly what happens every week at gymnastics for us too. He's been going for 9 months now, and, while he used to enjoy classes so much, it's been a disaster pretty much since he turned 2 a few months ago. We can't decide if we should stick it out and take him for the summer session, or just give up. I keep hoping it's just a phase.

coffeecoffeecoffee We are giving up. My husband dreads them now and he was the one who really wanted to enroll him. I was hoping to do swimming lessons instead but they aren't offered at a time we can make it so now I'm looking for a music class.

Swim and music are great options. Also, if you have a local library with a story hour - ours has a great program - my mom takes my girls each once a week and has been doing it starting with DD1 since age 6m. They have a lap sit, then a toddler and a preschooler group. Each is structured a little different. They do a craft in the two older classes each week.
If you have another option for gymnastics, try somewhere else. My nanny tried to enroll the girls at one place when DD1 was around 18 mos and it was way too structured for that age group - I also just don't think she was ready. I started her last fall at a different gym, age 2.5, and she has loved it and excelled. I think the coaches and environment are a much better fit. She also does dance - tap & ballet combo class - and LOVES that. Not in her class, but they do have quite a few boys in the program. They were really cute in the recital.

Another one I did with DD1 was a parent/child class for 12m to 2.5 at the Waldorf school where she now go to nursery. I had to take a morning off work once a week for the 6 weeks of the program last summer, but it was really nice to spend the time with her and helped us decide it was the right place for preschool. It was mostly free play, table activities (kneading bread dough, chopping fruit for snack, craft - which mostly the parents do, lol), circle time, snack, and free play outside. It had a nice structure and socialization, and was a good intro to her starting school there in the fall. I will definitely do it with DD2 at some point.

It's always crazy to me how few places offer evening and weekend activities for kids. People with 2 household incomes are much more likely to afford extra curriculars...why wouldn't you cater to them?

Has anyone tried Zumbini? I'm interested but would love to hear from someone who's done it before I sign us up! Thanks radtechgirl Yeah, we've done a few classes with a couple of different instructors. A mom I know became an instructor so we went to her sample classes and then a few sessions with someone else. DD (newly 2) loved them. They're all fairly similar since the instructors are trained to lead classes the same way. It's some very simple steps to music and lots of playing with instruments, jumping around, and dancing. Little circle time is expected. All the classes I've been to have had kids running all over and the instructors didn't seem phased.

No activities currently for kids-it's hard when they have visits on the weekends when we could have them do stuff and then during the work week we are at work and need to get kids from daycare, eat dinner, etc.
We are going to try to do the summer reading program at the library though. Some of the events are in our area in the evening so FX that we can go do that!

Never heard of Zumbini but it looks like there is a class near by...
Whenever I read it I keep thinking about Zoombinis which was my favorite computer game as a child. Lol.
