Morning. Yesterday was rough. I asked dh to come home at like 12 but his bosses said no so I had to parent until 5:30, at which point I locked myself in my room. I’m still not feeling well today, fever and headache, so DH stayed home. I called out of work already. I have big plans of staying in bed most of the day. I’m sorry for your loss jewelsI’m sorry you still aren’t feeling well. Are you planning to get tested for flu or covid? Hope you turn a corner soon. No, I’m not. I think it’s a gi bug, I have zero respiratory symptoms. I’m feeling a lot better today than I was yesterday, so I’m expecting that I’ll be back to normal tomorrow.

It’s snowing again. My parents had appointments for their second vaccine at 11:45 but they announced they were closing at 10 but would vaccinate anyone on today’s schedule if they arrived before 10. They made it but have been waiting forever. I had no idea it was the 100th day of school today since my kids only went 3 and 12 days this year for real. I’m super annoyed by coworkers who are fighting our return to in person instruction but who have sent their own kids to school all year in other districts. If you truly feel schools are unsafe, why did you send your kid?

Okay I have a completely frivolous question. We’re watching Friends, it’s the episode before Monica’s and Chandler’s wedding and they’re having the rehearsal dinner. We don’t really get the idea behind this. This is not a something that is done here. Is that something that being ‘hyped’ for tv or are these the norm in the US?

It's done after the wedding rehearsal and kind of a way to thank everyone for taking time from their day to be there. Depends on you, how big you make it. Sometimes it's just parents on both sides and wedding party. I've seen immediate family members invited as well. My first one was a BBQ at my moms house, very laid back. We didn't do one for my 2nd marriage.

Like mwhip said, it's usually a dinner after the rehearsal. Usually the bride would pay for the wedding and the groom's family pays for the rehearsal dinner. Sometimes it's just the wedding party and sometimes it's the wedding party and out of town guests. I say usually because who pays for what changes these days. I went to a very fancy wedding in Charleston and it was a 3 day ordeal. Pretty much everyone was from out of town and the rehearsal dinner was just as big as the wedding. crazy.

Ah I see. Rehearsal weddings and/or dinners never happen here. Also usually no bridesmaids/groomsmen. And no waking down the aisle, traditionally the groom picks up the bride from her parents house and they will drive to the ceremony together. We Dutch are cheapskates, we usually have two (ore three!) different invitations. One for ‘day guest’ a select group of close family and friends who will be there for the whole day including dinner (usually between 20-30 people). And one for people only invited to the ceremony & the party, they’ll have figure out their own dinner arrangements;).
Also, most people pay for their own weddings. My parents did pay for my dress!
Eta TLDR? dutch wedding traditions;).

For Dutch standards we had a big group of day guests because we wanted our friends to be there too. So in our case wedding at three, drinks/app/dinner for day guests between 4-7.30, party & cake 8, end 11.30. Also no gift registry & cash gifts are very much the norm. It is huge fun to rip open envelopes in the middle of the night while still high from your wedding 😉!

jewels, I'm sorry for your loss, but glad your grandma got to live a long life. Your grandparents sound like amazing people. I'm happy their memory can live on with your family. I'm in a similar situation with my grandma. She's 95 and my grandpa also passed in 2008. She's made it clear she misses him and is ready to go when the time comes...but it will be weird to have my grandparents both gone from this earth when the day comes. trtlcrzy hope you're 100% soon. klong11 and tgrimes thinking of you and hoping this is over soon. I'll sing my Pee Wee Herman song in your honor: "Where the star shine bright, both day and night....DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS." Sorry, I'm cheesy, but Pee Wee's Big Adventure was one of those movies I watched on repeat as a child because it was one of the only Beta Max's at my dad's and my brother was obsessed with it. I always wanted to go to Texas and sing that as a kid and have everyone join in. nam2013 I love those traditions. We definitely went against the American norm and had a very small wedding. About 35 people, 3 month engagement, my parent's backyard, no rehearsal dinner. It was definitely my style.

wineallthetime Cass goes back today too for the first time in over 11 months. She's nervous. She starts with a new teacher and almost all new classmates. Their day ends at 1:25 instead of the usual 2:55 so I'm excited to hear about it soon. M goes back in 2 weeks and learned today she'll get to keep her teacher. She was thrilled. I'm also in a daze about the days. It's a weird week for me and I work my other job Fri and Sat. Can't wait until it's done and I can enjoy the weekend.

I've never been involved with a wedding where they didn't have one. Sometimes there is a rehearsal at the church and then this is dinner afterwards. For my wedding we just did a small dinner for the wedding party and immediate family the night before. Some family's have almost a full mini wedding for a rehearsal dinner.

inthekitty Lol! I also used to watch Pee Wee’s Big Adventure on repeat. I was disappointed when I went to Texas as an adult and never witnessed people break out in that song. I also wanted to ask about the basement on an Alamo tour, but alas, it was a self-guided headphone tour. Large Marge used to scare the shit out of me...and the surgeon clowns. *shudders*

nam2013, oh it's fun when you bring up things like this and share the norm there! We had a rehearsal at our church and dinner in a private room at a restaurant after. It was our bridal party, parents and anyone else involved in the wedding (like people doing readings). Our dinner was casual. In-laws paid for the food and MH and I paid the bar tab. We just mingled and also gave thank you gifts to our bridal party, parents, ect.

Also, I had to put a coat on during the rehearsal at the church because it was a very bright church and my mom said you could see right through my dress. Whoooops!

Apparently there have been power and water issues in our area. School is out tomorrow- no distance learning either. It’s my weekend to work, so I’ll be going there the next three days. I’m actually not mad about it since we’ve been housebound for the last week.
