Gun or no gun is a very personal family decision. But if you ever put a gun in your hand in self defense mode you had better be ready to fire it. Please do not get a gun thinking that brandishing one is a deterrent. Please.
This is not directed at anyone but that is a common misconception that gets people killed.
1st rule of gun ownership, dont point gun at anything unless you are going to kill it. 2nd rule, know where you are aiming and whats behind it. They show you in good hunter safety courses that the wall behind the watermelon you shoot is not going to stop that bullet. If you shoot in a house its going thru multiple walls, not just the person/thing you aimed at. [Of course Small caliber 22 is likely not going to go that far past the person nor shotgun pellets but they will hit more than what you are aiming at)

Id be afraid of wildlife randomly entering my house looking for food if I left the doors and windows opened unattended. Tlex and her black bears come to mind I’m still low key worried that a raccoon or possum will come in through our dog door. Speaking of dog doors that’s how I used to get into my house when I was a teenager and left my keys in the house. Oh god, a raccoon DID come through our dog door in the middle of the night a few months back and our dog was traumatized for a good week or so. (Our dog and cat are both too stupid to learn to use the dog door, so the flap is taped up).

Hey I know this isn’t a confession but since everyone is here I need cooking advice. I was going to grill burgers but it’s too cold, so I’m doing skillet for first time, do I put oil in pan like I would a steak? I do not. The juice from the meat will release enough to cook it in. Non stick pan, of course. I thought so. I think I’m going to do it in my Dutch oven.

I don’t even know what fuck with locks means. A 90° turn of a deadbolt? The one in my room is not lined up right or something and a total PITA to lock/unlock. WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE OUTSIDE DOORS.

Speaking of dog doors that’s how I used to get into my house when I was a teenager and left my keys in the house. Which reminds me to say, we have top locks on our doors too. So, even if they were able to unlock from the outside, there’s another lock to get through on the inside. Our 6 safes and double locking system. I must look crazy. But our state has a high crime rate. Plus I’m paranoid.

My house has a front door and 3 back doors, one in my room, one in the living room, and one in the dining room. They are all big glass doors. Like french doors but only one side opens, not sure if those are still french doors or not, and lead out to my back porch.

ETA: my favorite way to cook burgers on the stove is to carmalize onions first, then use the leftover oil to cook the burgers 🤤

Well I do have a grill related confession. We have a propane grill and I'm too afraid to use it. H does all the grilling.
I know thats really dumb but its a weird mental block I have. Like I'm afraid I'll forget to turn something off or it'll blow up or...something 😬

My H has talked about getting a gun and the answer is no, never, absolutely not. The aluminum baseball bat under the bed is gonna have to do. This convo comes up about once a year in our house. I told him, before we were married 14 years ago, that my two hard nos were guns and motorcycles. I had a great uncle and grandfather commit suicide with guns, and they are a very hard no for that and other reasons like statistics referenced here. He seems to think I will change my mind. Nope. He doesn’t push, but just tests the water. Sorry H, not happening. I hate guns.

I forget to lock my car and that’s how I’m going to die. But I lock my doors even when I’m home because I’ve seen too many true crime things. I never lock my car. I'd rather have somebody open the door and find nothing of value than to smash my windows i forgot to lock my car once and someone stole my favourite prescription sunglasses. No one was going to smash my window for them but the opportunity presented itself to them to grab shit and go. I still miss those glasses, they were Ray Bans

I never lock my car. I'd rather have somebody open the door and find nothing of value than to smash my windows I took that to mean when she was in the car. But also someone is going to be in your backseat. Please check before getting in. Thanks. This happened to my dad once. It was a 2 seater with a hatchback. A guy had climbed into the back and couldn’t get back out. He was naked.
