I had a boyfriend who took me to all sorts of fancy stuff like the Opera. I loved the experience but omg that shit is so boring. There was a lady sniffing when that Mimi chick died. I was 👀 He also took me to the philharmonic and the only stuff I remember was that it was Vivaldi night and they did this one bit that morphed into the Tequila song. So there’s how cultured I am. now see, here we go, I am a major nerd and LOVE opera and philharmonic mumbo jumbo in fact, my first real opera was supposed to be on 01/31 of this year... FUCKING covid.

DD is campaigning for a bunny. I have rarely denied her anything in life. So she's due for a soul crushing. oh god STD will eat it No she won't, because we will never have a bunny. Or fish. Or birds. Or rodents. Or reptiles. Or amphibians. Or non canine mammals. I seem to only fall in love with asshole dogs, so that will be their lot along with me.

I can understand what rvasc is saying about avoiding things that make you feel. I think it’s separate from the art thing though. In general, if you are avoiding things to keep your feelings bottled in instead of processing them than it could be unhealthy or lead or unhealthy habits. That is exactly what I meant. If you’re avoiding something because it makes you feel something, that’s worth exploring. That is literally what I said.

I don’t care about the whole art part of this conversation, but yeah, I don’t gravitate towards emotional movies or TV because I’m a high empath and I don’t need to be taking on emotions from fictional characters. Shows like This is Us just feel like work for me. It’s almost emotional manipulation and for ME I’m not into it. I tend to consume entertainment and art that makes me laugh and smile. This is how I feel about Jodi Picoult. I hate feeling like I am being emotionally manipulated. I actually love poetry, but it’s more because I love hearing how words sound together and how they’re constructed to create the experience of a poem. And I know that sounds ridiculous.

But again, I acknowledge that I did miss that discussion so maybe there’s more I’m missing.

There’s a lot of emotional manipulation in art. I find it important to my own well being to recognize that and ignore it.

Your response of "that's not what I said, but ok" after I shared something a tad vulnerable wasn't real nice. But I get it. You were pricked.

This may shock you all, but I love ‘The Kiss’ by Klimt. I found his work weird and/or creepy for a long time then one day it clicked for me. Art is subjective, which is part of the fun of it all.

Ok. What did you say then? Probably a bit more constructive that that response, esp when someone is being honest and open with you. Well, it sounds like you have explored and made decisions that are healthy and good for you. So what I said doesn’t apply, because I said it was worth exploration. And I’m not on a campaign to make everyone love art, but I was really put off by the dismissal of art as an important expression, not just for individuals, but for the nation as a collective. People don’t have to love it, but dismissing it as unimportant, whether it’s your thing or not, which is what was happening at the beginning of the thread (not by any one person), just irritated me. Wait, did someone say it’s not important? I’ll admit I skimmed more than read but I didn’t see anyone say it wasn’t important? I feel like you’re just taking these opinions personal which is absolutely ok but the manner it’s coming off is kinda shitty.

All of this is hilarious as I actually enjoy a lot of paintings. My favorite afternoon in the city was when my mom and I had a docent at the AI of Chi give a whole talk on Cassatt. I love her work. However, I could totally understand someone taking one look and yawning. Domestic stuff speaks to me, and it's domain I can be in peacefully. This is how I am about history museums. I would spend hours in them if I could and would probably walk past an art museum. I accept that spending 3 hours at the Field museum would bore most people to tears without judgement.

The idea of an immortal spiteful Beta fish is adorable. We had what seemed like an immortal algae eating fish once. We got it to keep a freshwater tank of goldfish cleaner. It killed the goldfish even though the pet store said it was safe and then that fucker lived for like eight years. This is an amazing amount of time given how bad I am about keeping fish alive.
