J&J is claiming their vaccine to be 66% effective but it’s less so outside of the US. This would be high enough to get approval but it’s a downer that it’s not as effective as Pfizer and Moderna. And per the Wapo article, it’s problematic because is it less effective in South Africa. So is it less effective against their newest variant?
Also a bit confusing to read the CNN article with different percentages all over the place.

Oh I see that maybe CNN is saying 72% effective for J&J.

The South African variant has been found in 2 unrelated cases in SC (each with no history of travel), including one in my general vicinity. Given how infrequently SC tests the variants, its assumed to already be out in the community spread. I am ... not handling this well and the quick google search isn’t reassuring. Poofed stuff This doesn’t surprise me at all, unfortunately.

Oh I see that maybe CNN is saying 72% effective for J&J. Except it’s only 48% when you consider some of the new variants. That Twitter thread I posted this morning goes into a deep dive on this. There will probably be a very limited effectiveness of the J+J vaccine. I mean some protection is better than none, but if I had a choice I would not get it.

Anecdotally, a lot of our people are starting to get their second shots. Who does and does not get sick on the second shot has been interesting. A lot of the people who had a confirmed positive last spring are not having symptoms for the second shot. That gives me hope for some longer term immunity.

Ugh. I’m sorry Dr. Cox I hope YH can come home soon symptom and covid free. Oh jaygee. I’m sorry grandma is giving you guys so much stress. I hope she’s negative and stops her speakeasy lifestyle. If CV wasn’t so serious it’s be kind of a hilarious story. Secret party in the laundry room? This really is turning into the roaring 20s and speakeasies popping up...

I’m upset by the fact that it was supposed to be our hope for disadvantaged communities. Now the idea of sending them the “third rate” shot is gross. Hopefully it has potential of being more like the flu shot once we get this mostly under control.

Hopefully it has potential of being more like the flu shot once we get this mostly under control. I thought that as well. J&J still has huge advantages of storage and shipping, it sounds like, and the whole one shot deal. But now the perception of 'who gets what' could be so bad, even if the protection turns out to be not all that materially different in real life. I was under the impression that those percentages are still really great for a vaccine? Just that the first two were incredibly successful?

If you would have told me this information last summer before the mRNA vaccine results, I would have been excited. I kinda feel bad for the J&J scientists. It’s like coming in third at the olympics. What they are doing is still amazing.

I don’t think it’s all bad news for J&J and especially given that it is one shot and doesn’t have the same refrigerator requirements this could be so helpful in areas where that is an issue. This was a good thread.

J&J is also testing a 2 dose (Ensemble 2 - 2nd shot is 57 days after the 1st). I'm interested in seeing the efficacy of that version.

I'm so sorry jaygee . Grandma Mr Jaygee has been stressing *me* out through all this so I can only imagine what it's like for you and your H. I hope she stays healthy and is feeling better mentally soon.

I mean, I hate to sound picky but....I'd rather stay home longer because I have the privilege to do so, which I acknowledge, and wait for a Pfizer or Moderna vaccine. To me there is huge difference between 66-72% and over 90.

After a cup of coffee, if my doctor called up and said I've got J&J right now for you and the protection looks fine to me and the FDA, I'd be in the car speeding to get it.
I'm in 1B but probably weeks/months away from vaccination.
FWIW I and most of my friends are not in an underserved or rural area, and everyone did like the one-shot model. That might be a big selling point to everyone, especially if it turns out the percentage difference in protection is not really a real life material difference.

Vaxing 95% of the population to 70ish% is better than not vaxing at all, imo. People who might be willing to do one shot instead of two might at least get it. Especially with the reports about people feeling worse after the second, and MSM making it seem like the 2nd is awful, which isn't exactly true.
There will be obvious advances and I have a feeling its going to be like the flu shot where we have to do it every year eventually. So I'm not disappointed in the less efficacy of J&J.

I think one of the points that is being missed in comparing it to the mRNA vaccines is that it is still extremely effective at preventing severe disease, which is one of the main goals in putting the CIVID fire out right now.

H and I do chuckle when we can because man these olds are really stubborn. Where there’s a will theres a way I guess.

Severe disease/death from COVID is a very real fear for me. I’d take J&J in a heartbeat over waiting several months under a pretty strict personal lockdown for an mRNA vaccine. Also, remember, it is also possible that people may be able to get J&J or Novovax now and an mRNA vax sometime in the future if the mRNA vax provides better long term protection.. I think it will be particularly useful for vaccinating the younger, healthier crowd.

Also, it will be interesting to see if it proves true that full immunity takes longer to develop with J&J.
