blablabirdie how did they think the Inauguration was evidence that masks don't work? I don't follow. Masks are dangerous because people who wear them don’t keep distance. They also wear them wrong and touch them a lot and that spreads more disease. People at the inauguration were regularly adjusting their masks, taking them off and putting them on again(this is an awful thing according to Tegnell), and then they were hugging and shaking hands while doing all this mask adjustment. All of these behaviors Tegnell uses to argue against masks and says they make masks ineffective and even more dangerous than no masks. This is just so mind-bogglingly stupid I hate that it has to be given any light of day at all. Yes, everyone needs to do their best, but touching your mask, hugging, and brief interactions while masked are not going to spread more disease. Are they gargling each other's masks?? No. Stop it.

My son missed the cutoff for K by one day this year and I definitely wasn’t pushing it. He will have to go this fall and man... idk how we will do it. MH cannot work from home. I do but my job involves meetings and phone calls with students where I can’t plan when they will happen. I guess when/if the time comes, we will have to have our BTDT mamas give us all the tips. And wine.

My grandma is getting her vaccine today and hopefully it appears H may be able to get his vaccine somewhere around the 1st. Keeping my fingers crossed.
I hope this admin can quickly get these vaccines and distribution running more quickly and smoothly for more people. I don’t believe my parents will qualify for quite a while yet.

I would have liked to be a fly on the wall in the Fauci household when it became clear that Biden would win the election.

I am hopeful we won't be dealing with this in the fall (I need to be for my mental health), and I know everyone's circumstances are different, but I am home alone with a virtual kindergartener and am on the phone with different people all day long. It is an adjustment for sure, but everyone is so understanding and nobody even flinches when DD shows up on the screen asking me a question. Even people I never talked to before.

Oh yeah, I've seen the crazy numbers from Ireland and the UK, and I agree that even though extending the lockdown is hard, it's necessary. I feel like Sweden has moved into an alternate reality from the rest of Europe and I just don't get it. We are definitely in an alternate reaity— our disease control heads were caught emailing and agreeing with Igor Cummin videos (he is anti lockdown and believes the disease dips are due to a natural cycle of Covid). And our 8% of highly contagious version is based on a tiny sampling of actual tests, compared to Denmark and Finland. But Tegnell doesn’t make mistakes, so we are kind of screwed (he says mistakes and being wrong only happen if you make a conscious decision to cause harm - therefore he has not been wrong, only some of his estimations were a bit off, but only because they were based on the data at the time and hindsight is not a good tool of assessment) While he doesn’t carry the 80% support he carried in the spring now the attitude here is ‘what can we do? Lockdown and masks don’t work - so better to be without.’’ ETA - they released our regional numbers and I was wrong - we dipped almost 500 cases so we have gone from about 1560/100000 to 1100/100000. So, still pretty high. Holy crud. We're at like 120/100000 and the goal is to get to 50 before the restrictions can be loosened.

DD2 is negative. Glad to put that behind us. Also happy that it was only about 36 hours for results! That seems pretty fast.

So it's a big mess in my state today with the DOH canceling vaccine clinics for school districts. And the ones that got canceled are mad because other districts in other parts of the state have already gotten theirs but the DOH is telling districts now they have to wait. But the DOH had approved the clinics and then canceled them the day before. And I guess at one point people were able to share their codes they got to schedule their vaccine so people were able to jump the line and get their vaccine when they shouldn't have. It's just feeding more into the hate our governor gets. 😬 I definitely don't follow the cancellation, especially with all the benefits it can bring to use it as a model for other vaccination events. It seems like there are a few entities involved to push back against this decision so hopefully it is reversed and gets back on schedule. I thought teachers were supposed to be getting vaccinated in this phase. I only watched 30 minutes of my districts school board meeting on Wednesday, but the timing seems to coincide so they must have complained. This is one time where living in the smaller towns has been a benefit as my family has all gotten round 1.

True Also, hasn’t it been determined that this isn’t a virus spread by touch but through aerosols, so the spreading of it through touching the mask wouldn’t be as much as a problem. (Note, not saying it can’t ever spread by mask touching, but the data doesn’t support it right now...and if I have this wrong, I welcome correction)

We regularly have cats, dogs, and kids make appearances in our meetings and it just makes everyone smile. Once DS snuck over for a quick hug and got a big “awwww” from everyone. 😁

But if it is aerosol he will then insist that is another reason why masks won’t help. (That one I don’t understand) I didn’t read anything about the vaccinations in the critical opeds, but our national news network already also criticized the US for grandstanding by putting politicians at the front of the vaccination queue because ‘they are famous’ We are very much in the us vs the world mentality at the moment.

The early argument against masks with aersol transmission was that the particles that were transferring the virus were too small to be filtered out by most masks, and only high quality ones would work. I'm sorry that even at this stage, your government hasn't come around to better measures.

Do we think the new plan is ambitious enough? The seven day average for vaccines administered is currently 939,973. Won't the new stimulus money for states improve that number?
Is Biden claiming 100M vaccinated or 100M doses? I mean, we're already nearly 1M per day and things suck right now.

They took it as 100M doses in 100 days. Their theory is that the strategy is to "aim low and over deliver".

mc13, thanks! Obviously the last administration had some sort of plan in place if we were reaching so many doses a day. I don't like the optics of saying we had to start from scratch, it seems disingenuous. Why not bump up the goal instead? Or if the problem is that we already shipped everything and are about to run out and there's no plan to maintain that pace, use that message? I don't know. I see people posting things on Facebook like, "The last administration was vaccinating nearly 1M per day. The new Biden will reach... (drumroll) 1M per day." And it did make me question if it was just under promise, over deliver or what.

The shots in arm up to this point have been for populations that can be somewhat easily located and distributed - health care workers at their place of employment and LTC residents where they live. I think they're starting from scratch on plans to get vaccines to people beyond that out in public. That currently seems to be incoherent.

California is dead last in vaccination rates. It’s such a mess. And no one is spilling the beans on what the problem is. My county health officer said it’s because there are multiple problems and it’s unclear what’s the biggest hurdle right now. 😭
And a lot of health officials are kind of throwing up their hands and looking for the health systems to vaccinate. Mine is scaling up but it’s just not going to be enough. We don’t have any of the resources to meet the need. Like we are standing up different remote locations to vaccinate but each one does like 200 patients a day. Which helps but...not nearly enough.

I read an article today that said at the current pace we are receiving vaccine in CA it will take until June to vaccinate 70% of those over 65. I almost fainted. Neither of our parents are in that age group so.... I need all that stuff announced today to work out so we can speed things up out here. My mom is very unhappy about how her county has been handling vaccinations. I guess there was a free for all in Stockton somewhere where they were just vaccinating everyone and not prioritizing. She will turn 65 in April, but she also has stage 4 cancer, so she is really anxious to get the vaccine, especially with my dad still working in the hospital (he did get both doses, at least).
