I’m having a weird day. After being up all night coughing with a tightness in my chest, I went to urgent care. Covid was negative, but I was told I was in the high risk category because of my history with chronic bronchitis/pneumonia. It made sense and I’m feeling stupid that I didn’t realize that before. I get A LOT of sinus infections and they always go straight to my chest. Anyway, both the doc and the nurse practioner told me the majority of the patients they’d had put on a vent or die had the same history as me. I know many are in the same position and I’m feel selfish centering my feelings right now, but my anxiety is out of control today. And the doctor told me under no circumstances should I travel to my sister’s wedding in June unless I’ve been fully vaccinated, which I already wasn’t planning to do, but anyway, fuck COVID. Hugs. ❤️ I have a similar history with pneumonia/bronchitis and asthma. Plus I’m overweight. Being high risk for COVID mortality/morbidity is really scary. I know I’m constantly feeling a strange mix of scared for my health, mad that so many are suffering so terribly due to the ineptitude of the federal response, and grateful for the factors that have so far left my little family protected medically and financially from the full brunt of the pandemic.

That is interesting because the latest that my friend, who works for a company developing a vaccination, showed me last week the latest efficacy for this one was only around 60% I read that they included a batch of vaccine with a lower concentration in the trials by accident because they were using nanodrop spectrophotometry techniques instead of qPCR to quantify the adenovirus vector and something else in the solution interfered with it. It turns out that the lower dose of vaccine is much more effective than the higher dose. www.bbc.com/news/amp/health-55086927

I’m trying to take a screen break this week, but I had to share with you all that my brother got the first dose of the Moderna vaccine this afternoon. He works as a substance abuse counselor in a residential program associated with the criminal justice system. It was very unclear if he or the residents would be vaccinated in the first wave, but it turns out they all will. My mom and I sobbed on the phone together when she called me to share the good news. He’s been so alone this year and so careful not to expose my mom and dad. I’m just so happy for him and my parents.

My state got almost 16k vaccines in yesterday for long term care facilities. They already started vaccinating yesterday. My uncle is a chef at one so he is getting his today.
Two of my cousins got theirs last week as well (they both work in the medical field but not at hospitals) and it's exciting how many people I know that have already gotten their vaccines.
My mom got hers Christmas Eve and didn't have any side effects from it.

Friends with knowledge/experience, can you help me understand how H’s cousin is doing? Like is he improving or is this pretty dire?
His mom said he was able to get up at lunch today with help and they reduced his oxygen by 5%, which was good because he was already at the max. This is the first “improvement” she’s been able to report. He’s been in the hospital since Christmas Day.
I don’t really know what it means to reduce oxygen by 5% - is that significant or minor? Is it likely a step in the right direction or just a fluctuation in his illness?
I understand you all aren’t his medical team but I’m just trying to get some context for this update. His mom is feeling hopeful and described it as “baby steps in the right direction.”
TIA.

easier, Not in the medical field but I think that’s a definite improvement. It means his lungs are healing and startito do what they are supposed to do with normal air. 💗

Also his fiancé is positive but asymptomatic. I told H to ask her if we can deliver groceries, hot food, mail, etc but if you have any other ideas please suggest. She’s all alone. 😢

She’s all alone. 😢 H’s cousin went to the hospital a few months ago and they wanted someone to clean her home before she returned. Cousin’s mom ended up doing it, but maybe some cleaning supplies would be helpful?

I assume if he’s eating by mouth(?) he’s not on high levels of oxygen support because at a certain point you can’t eat by mouth bc of fear of asphyxiation. 5% lower is good if he can maintain at that new level. If he can stay there and tolerate the 5% lower that’s a step in the right direction (usually).I think him “getting up at lunch” is a good sign from general covid knowledge/ where even sitting up in bed or walking to the bathroom can wipe you out for the rest of the day.

My coworkers BFF who is a dr got the vaccination last Monday and woke with a low grade fever on Sunday and tested positive. Poor thing was almost in the clear but caught it in that small window before she got immunity. It’s makes me wonder if HCWs should have to take a couple days off after the shot to lay low and not have the risk of exposure in the hospital setting.

Good point. The point that this dr friend made was that she wondered if her immunity was a bit lowered while starting to react to the vaccination those few days after the first shot and that is why she happened to finally catch it in that small window.

Well I'd think if her body was ramping up to fight this thing due to the vaccine, then she'd be less likely to catch it. But prob caught it standing in line to get the shot....

I'm so annoyed with my in laws. We ended up going to MH's aunt's for Christmas so MH could see her because she isn't doing too well with her Parkinsons. I felt anxious about being there but glad MH got some time with her.
But now my in laws just think we can spend all this time together. They want us to go over tomorrow for my BIL's birthday and then they want the girls to spend a few nights and days with them. It's like they forgot about the pandemic and just want to live life normally. And then we'll be the bad guys for saying no and not letting them spend time with their grandchildren.

It’s makes me wonder if HCWs should have to take a couple days off after the shot to lay low and not have the risk of exposure in the hospital setting. The trial data from pfizer shows about 50% immunity after the first shot and about 95% after the second, so there is only partial until 2 weeks after getting both shots. Hopefully she gets a mild case and the antibodies help her fight it!

How are you guys holding up cnf? How is your DD2 feeling? DD2 was doing well earlier. Her fever is high now and only came down a smidge with Tylenol. I think she's in for a rough go of things which is so hard after she spent all summer in the hospital and having multiple surgeries. Poor thing can't catch a break. DD1 had a negative repaid but I suspect her PCR will come back positive. She had a fever this morning and now she's coughing a ton. H, the baby, and I all seem fine so far.
