Yeah you. Not your kids. Anyone having career change thoughts? Or have experience changing careers? I thought maybe we could talk about it and offer advice/hair pats.

I'm very seriously considering becoming a real estate agent. I've been doing a lot of soul searching this year about what my next step is and this seems like it might be a good fit for me. Does anyone here work in real estate?

I've been doing a lot of soul-searching in this area. Pre-kids, I was an artist (like, sold my work!) and then a gardener.
Now, gardening part-time is great, but this particularly flexible job won't last forever and I won't be able to do it if we have a third kid (I would make way less than daycare costs for 3).
My current ideas:
floral arrangements (I've done three weddings)
floral CSA (you pay $XXX in April and get a bouquet a week through October)
kitschy tee-shirts or bags or whatever based on either plants/flowers/agriculture AND my town and surrounding towns (farmers markets, etc).

ovenrack, would you grow the flowers yourself for the CSA? That, combined with the tshirt/bag idea could be flexible and profitable.

I could see you doing real estate also. I don't know what real estate is like up there, but I know it's very, very different between tx and ok. It's one of those tvjnga though that the more you hustle, the better you do. There is also a lot of paperwork.

I have no idea what I want to do when I grow up. I spent 11 years in research and compliance. And now I've been a SAHM for almost 3. I'm giving myself one more year for sure. But really need to start thinking about what I want to do.

It's one of those tvjnga though that the more you hustle, the better you do. There is also a lot of paperwork. Real estate here can be very different, depending on what you want to do. There are agents who work part time as a side gig in rural areas and agents who sell multi-millions a year in the city and commuting areas. I'm trying to figure out where I want to land.

Real estate has always fascinated me, too, especially with the current market!
Realistically, unless something super flexible with higher pay comes along, I'll probably be keeping my career for the long haul. It's been really good for work/life balance with flexible hours/part-time WFH that I'm not sure I'd be willing to give up. At least not for awhile.

I'm rethinking all of my career plans. I'm still working on my PhD and I always planned to get an academic job. But since having L my thoughts on that have changed. Academic positions are stressful, competitive, and you never ever get to leave work at work. It always creeps over into evenings and weekends because there's always grading, course planning, publishing, emails, etc. I look at my friends who have kids and who work in academe and they look so stressed. I don't envy them.
Right now, I want to have two more kids close together (if possible) and be a stay at home mom until they're all in school. After that, I really don't know what I'll do. Maybe I could get a job in a more administrative position at a university. Maybe I could work at a library. I was a part-time medical transcriptioner for a few years so maybe I could get back into that. I really don't want to go back to school for anything and any job I do in the future will just be supplemental income, so good hours and low stress are a priority.

I've already done one career change, 3 years ago when I burned out working in daycare and got an office job doing payroll. I like payroll, will probably start thinking about moving companies after I have kid #2, it would be nice to have a shorter commute. I like my company, but the commute is brutal in the morning, usually over an hour on the turnpike.
I contemplated going to grad school before I ended up in payroll, for Occupational Therapy, but I ended up abandoning the idea because it was a two year full time program and I wanted to start having kids. I miss working with kids sometimes, but it's so nice to have a 9-5 job

I've already had one career change, when I moved from politics to digital media after getting my masters in journalism, but that was right before R was born and I've been home since. I think I would probably go back to that, especially since there are a lot of part time and work from home opportunities there. With the twins not even a year old yet, it'll be a few years before I will. For now, I'm just trying to stay current on all the trends and keep my skills as sharp as possible.

Already made my career change. I was a business analyst at a big Secondary Mortgage Market company. After A was about a year and a half, I couldn't do it anymore, so I quit to be SAHM. And now I'm a dog trainer a few nights a week. I love how flexible this path has been for me. I shadowed for a while and now I have my own class, and I'm still learning so much about the field and where I might want to take my career. For now, though, it's a little extra pocket money and tons of learning opportunities.

Last August I went from bedside nursing to case management, which has been a huge change for me. I switched from 3 12h shifts to 5 8h shifts, and from hourly to salary. M went from part time DC to FT. I also moved from surgical step down to cardiac icu in the past few months. It has been so much change, and in so many ways it's been a tough year for our family. The new schedule has been great for me-- I am surprised bc I thought I would hate it. I still work with patients and their families, so I'm really glad about that. I was hitting a wall in my previous position, I was really feeling like I didn't have much room for growth. Stepping so far out of my comfort zone has been incredibly hard, but I am growing and learning so much. It's still hard every day, and I'm definitely dealing more with end of life care in this new environment. I'm glad I made the change, but it's a work in progress. grumpycakes, I think you'd be great in real estate. You have such a flair and vision for what a home could be.

I would rather be doing literally anything else right now. I work part time supporting families with children who have special needs to access supports and services. I get yelled at a lot about things I have no control over (waiting lists, funding, etc.) Also part time/casual working overnight (asleep) shifts in a community living organization for adults with developmental disabilities. I like that job.
I've been working towards my Bachelor's in social work buuut, I don't think I want to continue to MSW.
I think a lot about going back to school. I've considered diagnostic imaging/medical sonography but it's a competitive program.

I was actually strongly considering getting my realtor's license right before we moved a year ago. We're in an extremely rural area so I feel like it may be tough to do here, although all the Realtors I've met with and come across are super old so some fresh blood is needed, as I'm sure they'll all be retiring in the nearish future. So that's still i on my radar, but I would want it more of a part-time gig as opposed to a full-time job.
I quit my job to stay at home a year ago, and I'm really liking it. My previous job was in sales and although it was pretty lucrative and flexible in terms of hours and clientele, it was so unbelievably stressful so I don't know that I can go back to that. I actually like sales though so I'm not opposed to doing that just in a different environment. Like perhaps real estate.
My husband's always had a dream of opening a coffee shop Cafe someday, and our area could really use one of those because there's not many breakfast places to choose from, so I could adapt that dream to be my own in the future.

I need to find something to supplement DH's income unless he becomes motivated to pursue more liscensing in his field, but I'm not really sure what I want to do and I feel like I lack marketable skills. I don't want to do anything until all of the kids are in school full time, and doing something on the side feels daunting because of needing childcare. I was thinking of trying to do something administrative at the kids' school. Alternatively I often feel the desire to get involved with a certain department at DH's company and overhaul it based on my experience working with a different company, but that is very unlikely.

We have 2/3 acre so I do think I could set up flower beds to do get started here. It's amazing what you can do with less than an acre! I'm tempted, but don't know if there's actually a market for weekly bouquets around here. There was a cut flower CSA conference a few weeks ago, about 90m away. I regret not going.

That is really cool, OR. You live in and around some pretty affluent areas, right? I can totally see that being popular if you market it the right way. You could even offer different packages where you do the arrangements and switch out the containers every week. Like low centerpieces for the dining table or mantles, bigger arrangements for living rooms and even single stems for bedrooms and bathrooms and stuff. You could load up on mason jars and dollar store vases to start. And grosgrain ribbon!!!

What do you guys think I should do? grumpycakes, I feel like tee-shirts/bags are cool but only to a point, ya know? And I'm sure they'd have to be more expensive than anyone would like in order to break even. I dunno.
