I just went to donate and the website says 'form over quota' so I hope that means they are being overwhelmed with donations. Will check back later.

I'm so saddened by this discovery and hope every residential school is investigated with the same technology, there can't be truth and reconciliation if the truth continues to be covered up and ignored.
It takes a lot of effort to unlearn the white washed history most of us have been taught and to see the truth of what really happened. I know i'm still learning and I want to make sure my kid grows up knowing that colonialism was a centuries long horrific genocide and not some great gift (which is what i was taught).

Also sometimes i struggle with weighing in on these issues because i wasn't born here, i feel like a fake Canadian who shouldn't get to have an opinion since it's not my past but it is my future and i want to work on making it better.

Born here or not, there is no fake Canadian. We need people to speak up on these issues.

DS asked me if he should tell anyone that he’s Ojibwe because he’s worried about people being mean to him. I was gutted. He also was nervous about starting school because he was worried it was ‘one of those schools’.
We’re all settlers* and have obligations to Indigenous folks living on this land. I feel like people aren’t wanting to do the real work. They hear ‘land back’ and get huffy. It’s uncomfortable reconciling what’s still going on (MMIWG, astronomical foster care rates, continued sterilization, man camps, starlight tours, drinking water etc) and what our roles are and how we still benefit from the systems in place. There are many, many more mass graves. Babies buried in walls and floorboards in these hellish buildings. The government spent more on fighting survivors in court than they would’ve spent actually locating the bodies for these families.
This ‘discovery’ isn’t new for Indigenous folks. They’ve always known. So the alarm people now feel is frustrating in a way because where has everyone been? I hope I don’t sound holier than thou btw, I’m a first generation Canadian and still a settler. I’m just angry. I should avoid comment sections, but seeing how ignorant people are, or how unwillingly they are to do the right things is infuriating. (I don’t mean anyone here)
My MIL was ‘lucky’ and only went to Day School. The trauma is very hard to deal with in an intergenerational sense. It’s still destroying families. Racist policies are still in place. More kids are being taken now than at the height of residential schooling. None of it is in the past.
*this doesn’t include descendants of slavery or those who didn’t have agency over their bodies in arriving here.

You aren't coming off any sort of way babybean. I'm so sorry your DS has to have those thoughts/worries. I've been reading the stories from survivors and I am absolutely gutted by the things they experienced. I have been drifting from the church for a number of years. But I've been feeling guilty lately that my boys haven't had communion or confirmation or anything and trying to decide if I would enroll them in Catechism Classes. This has cemented my decision not to. While I still have faith, to a degree, I cannot support a church that would not only commit these atrocities but also refuse to take any responsibility for them in this day.

babybean I have so many of the same feelings, thank you for posting. Every post where someone is "shocked" has been putting me in a really bad place. Like no Brenda. This is why we had an epic facebook battle 5 years ago and you totally made me sound crazy. cool. glad your enlightened. Or people like I can't believe this happened to your ancestors. adn its like no, this happened to DH's parents. not his ancestors. like dude. I dunno it's hard to express, but it's great that it's finally seeing some light but also so so so frustrating how many people truly had no idea or continue to think that this is a "discovery". Like it has been known and ya'll were to busy focusing on what you (general you) thought Indigenous people were doing wrong. I guess I am just angry and disheartened.

like they literally told us they weren't funding classroom doors because it's not really required for safety.
In what world do schools have classrooms that don't have doors?
And yes, I did argue that it actually is a safety requirement to be able to close a door.

I hope these people get entirely exposed for how they’ve systemically ensured that everything is more stressful, lower quality, unsafe, and well below standard in the lives of indigenous children in particular. Just as the records from residential schools will reveal perpetrators we also need to shame and hold accountable todays elected officials actively choosing these conditions for children. Last night I read through a February meeting agenda from the NWT Legislative Assembly and the pleas for help couldn’t be clearer or have more actionable requests. I have a lot to learn about how government works but I’m holding myself accountable for doing so, so I can learn and share info on how to pressure the right politicians. If anyone here is a Canadian politics geek and wants to nerd out, I’d be very into that.

Did you know that because of “paper shortage” they destroyed a lot of residential school documents to “recycle them”? Now they refuse to release documents they do have. It’s not even subtle. I’m not too familiar with the ins and outs but in a general sense I feel like you can’t be in politics without getting your hands dirty. It’s kinda wild. A close family friend was on the TRC and consulted with MIL and Mh’s uncle regarding the recommendations laid out and they have since stepped away. The government really doesn’t care. It’s all smoke and mirrors, good PR photos and fake tears.

We took the kids to parliament hill today to lay down signs they made for Every Child Matters. It was disturbing to see people there wearing Canada flags and trying to defiantly celebrate today. .
They rang the bells of parliament to play O Canada and had snowbirds performing in the air at noon, meanwhile 2 indigenous kindergarten teachers wept and sang children’s songs around the memorial items left in front of the eternal flame. It was so fucked up that they didn’t cancel either of those things, so tone deaf, and felt intentionally callous. I will never forget it and I don’t think my kids will either.

Do we have any posters here dealing with the west coast extreme heat/Lytton fire? MH’s grandpa has been hospitalized due to collapse from the heat (Vancouver), he’s making a good recovery but he’s in his mid nineties so it’s pretty tough to know he had such a bad spell. It’s pretty crazy for me to try an imagine it that hot there. No one has AC, like, no one.

I'm sorry Tlex, I hope he feels better soon. We're not dealing with the extreme heat over here. We were having higher than normal temperatures for a while, but now it's dropped significantly (like was 8 degrees the other day, and parts of the island had a frost warning). The fluctuations have been bizarre. But yeah, if it hit that high here I don't know what we would do, we don't have AC either, I can only think of 1 person (household) I know that has it.

I’m not built for 40+C weather. Glad your family is ok! We don’t have AC either, and it was 31C upstairs the other day. So kids slept in the basement and we used fans on the main floor. Glad it’s over now, and we’re back to normal temps 🥵

yes the heat was crazy! we were camping but thankfully the camper had A/C because the dogs did not leave it except at night and early in the morning. Tlex sorry to hear about your H's grandpa, that's scary. We were at a national park on Canada Day and usually they do a huge celebration. I saw very few people wearing Canada day clothing though and a lot of orange so that was good. But I have zero faith that the cancelled celebrations were the park's idea. Likely due to the strict restrictions MB still has rather then an actual observation. One motel covered their entire lawn in orange flags.

Looks surer than ever that we’ll be voting in a federal election soon after our kids start school in September. Thoughts?

Looks surer than ever that we’ll be voting in a federal election soon after our kids start school in September. Thoughts? Not gonna lie, I'm nervous. We're also having some local elections here next month. I posted on our community Facebook page asking where I could find information about our candidates (we moved so I'm new to this area) and the only candidate that reached out to me to answer questions was the PC candidate. Crickets from the rest.

My NDP candidate has visited my house twice this provincial election cycle, and left my husband a phone message answering his questions. Some people have hustle. I think the Liberals will fare well. The Moderna manufacturing deal will take away a big conservative talking point regarding domestic manufacturing. I care very little if they have a minority or majority government, but I suspect they will retain power. I can't see PC gaining a huge foothold given how they have managed on the provincial level, but who knows. People have big feels about this pandemic.

I am finding myself strangely unsure of how to vote this year, I’ve always voted NDP and the only time I’ve hesitated is when I wanted Harper out soooooo badly I was terrified that my vote would be wasted in that effort. This year I have a mixed feeling because the liberals are not even close to where I am politically, but they have the universal $10/day childcare on the table and the NDPs squashed that back in 2008 (I think it was?) and I am still salty about that. I need to see this program go through, it’s been a large part of my life to advocate for affordable and quality childcare and I don’t want to lose the momentum going right now. I’m also pleased with the Liberals making vaccine passports and mandating vaccines for all federal workers/contractors. I was so disheartened to hear Andrea Horvath’s bs about the charter of rights and freedoms - sure she walked it back but not properly.
I have lots of problems with the NDP too (no one pleases me!) - I want to love Jagmeet but then he does things for attention and grandstanding that make the NDP look foolish as a party and give people hesitation about voting for them. So then the vote remains forever split by libs and cons if no one thinks the NDP is a valid party.
Im very disgusted by how little Trudeau has done for the indigenous communities compared to what he promised, and ultimately I think that will sway me to stick with NDP, but I need to look into what the NDP promises to do for them more - input welcomed.

I vote NDP more often than not, but am always turned off by any party platform that is more than 50% bitching about the party in power. I am sympathetic to the Liberals this cycle, because this was a hell of a crisis to navigate. I like that support was offered quickly and pretty damn broadly when the pandemic hit. I like that they managed to get Moderna to agree to manufacture in Canada. I don't know that anyone else would have done better. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ $10/day childcare make me want to build a time machine. NS has promised that it is coming in the next few years. I had my kids about $80,000 too early.

euphony I know, it’s infuriating but I also try to think about the generations coming up behind us - I want free post secondary for them, and for my daughters to never question being able to stay in the work force should they get pregnant. I know you feel these things too and we can be salty together about student debt and daycare costs we had to endure! Our kids will also need every cent they can to just get housing one day 😭 I think the liberals did quite well pandemic wise, although to be fair the NDP are the reason CERB was made so available and they pushed back to raise the amount to $2000, I think that $800 more a month than the liberals proposed was the difference between crisis and stability for millions of people. It also made an excellent texting grounds for a UBI and I’m all for that!
