This weekend is the first time in awhile I've felt sad about things. FB reminded me a year ago DD had her 1st day of kindergarten. School is starting two weeks later this year to give teachers more time to prepare, which I'm happy to give them. But I also can't help but think how much this school year is going to suck. I'm not letting DD see that, I told her we'll go shopping for back to school supplies and how she gets to go to school two days a week and be with her classmates. I just have to hope the 2021-2022 school year will be different (please don't burst my bubble).

NY has done a really good job with testing. Throughout this whole thing, I can’t remember a time when tests were really scarce. And now that our numbers are low, there’s ads all the time encouraging people to get tested. I just looked up my local testing place to see when I should go and it says tests are free and there’s currently a 2 day turn around time. It’s bizarre that there is just such a disparity in testing across the country. I know. 😞 especially since it seems like regular and repeated testing (on top of masks, social distancing etc) is really the only way out of this. I’m so hopeful if Biden gets elected maybe we can have more of this. Same. We’ve been doing this for a while. We really don’t have an excuse not to have our shit together by now.

There was a news article about SDSU starting and college kids having parties without masks. I’m very Nic Cage you don’t say. It’s really frustrating that higher ed was able to open and K-12 wasn’t. I know I have said that many times, but it’s a constant frustration for me. There’s something rolling around around in my brain about how we have bought and sold the lie to these kids for literally their entire lives that they are entitled to this very expensive four year experience where they don’t have to live in the real world, and now we are shocked that they are acting on the values we taught them. I can’t exactly articulate it though.

Question- does anyone have the most recent data/recommendation on when you should get tested after exposure? My parents fly here next Saturday. They have to show a negative test taken within 72 hours of flying (fx they get their results in time), but then once they land there is no official policy for quarantine or testing, because technically residents of the US are not supposed to be flying to Portugal. However, they'd like to get tested sometime after they land for extra peace of mind after being on a plane for 8 hours. I know that it can take up to 14 days to show symptoms, but when is it possible to turn a test? 5 days? 7 days? I am trying to get private testing scheduled for them. Infection Control policy at our hospital is a test 5 days after last possible exposure. When people travel they have to quarantine when they return for 5 days and then get tested (and quarantine until results the next day).

So, even if there was exposure, no one can force you to take the test

So even if you refuse to test you aren't able to come back until cleared to go by the county. Above I was talking about just regular testing for kicks. I think my county has a good plan to respond to most situations. ETA words that make sense

I was talking to a friend last night who is a naval officer. He works on a ship (so very close quarters) with 3000 others. He said the chief medical officer is an infectious disease specialist and was very “THIS IS MY MOMENT” when CV kicked off. She put major precautions all at once into play, and their peak positive rate was around 1.6%. She’s finally (rightfully) getting attention for all her hard work and other military installations are starting to come to her for action plans. It’s like six months behind where we should have been, but the friend said he was feeling very hopeful about what she is accomplishing.

I got an email today from our school about fall pictures. I just thought they wouldn't happen this year but the photographer will set up tents outside at the high schools and you have to register for a 5 minute slot in advance.
I'm happy that I'll still be able to get Kindergarten pics of DD1.

Had a brief breath held moment this weekend for SO's family, his brother spiked a fever on Sunday. I'm not sure how but somehow he got a rapid test and it was negative, however. Given his parents' throw caution to the wind attitude about this whole thing, I was sure it was going to come back positive.

With Iowa being the shitshow it is I'm honestly shocked they went back in the first place.

Apparently a child in my hometown was sent to school while awaiting test results. It came back positive and now the entire third grade and a significant portion of the staff are in two week quarantine. I’m hoping that choosing to shut bars again over a mask mandate will be the end of Reynolds’ career, but probably not...

That just feels inevitable. I wish schools had just called it before exposing everyone, but too many places were resistant.

You're relying on people to be responsible, and they aren't. They just aren't. The argument of numbers being low in an area...yeah, but it takes exactly one.

If she would have only left it up to the districts like she said she was going to then we might not be in this mess. But instead, Mr. President says jump and she says how high and here we are, paying the price.

They are using a local photographer and are calling it a tent event that we register for a 5 minute slot on their website. They are doing 4 days at each high school and the elementary and middle schools are assigned to a certain high school. You can do siblings at the same time. Everyone must be wearing masks unless being photographed. One parent is allowed in the tent. They are offering a discount if you pre-order. Some schools weren't included like my niece's middle school so if my sister finds out what their plan is I'll let you know.

So hybrid students were supposed to be able to start in person next Tuesday since our county is in the green. But on Friday our district sent out an email that they will be using an independent third party for a parent survey as the majority of teacher's would prefer to stay virtual through Fall Break.
What a mess. We chose virtual through the semester but I can't imagine the stress of parents not knowing what things will look like next week.

School starts back up in person for traditional students on the 15th on a staggered schedule. They were supposed to be virtual for the first 9wks, but the school board has decided our county is doing well enough for them to go back early. Families may opt to keep their child home for the full 9wks.
Virtual academy students (my kids) aren't affected and will continue online.
We've been waffling between green and yellow, so idk.

I keep thinking about how I was in HS in the 1990s during the height of the AIDS epidemic and the whole "you are having sex with every person your partner has had sex with" message was drilled into us. That's been my covid mindset.

Lately I've been thinking about the fact that gyms have been open for nearly three months, that restaurants have been open in some capacity.
We have increasing community spread for sure, but not like the epic wildfire spread of disease that I worried about in the spring.
As time goes on, I get more comfortable with doing certain things and going certain places because I'll mask and sanitize. And I won't deal with people in public who don't mask.

DH and I still occasionally go to restaurants inside and go shopping indoors weekly. What we don't do is have close-knit family reunions or raging keggers. I trust us to distance, wear our masks, and wash our hands. DD also gets in home speech services and thats probably the only one that freaks me out cause I can't control the teacher's choices. But the benefit of appropriate SPED services outweighs my fear currently.

I do think things will change this winter, as patio dining goes away.
I'm not yet willing to dine indoors with anyone remotely near me, so I assume my dining habits of this summer will shift back to staying at home all the time, which bums me out a bit.
Maybe I can build a plastic bubble that I can set up on the sidewalks outside restaurants and eat in there.

I think we are starting to enter the "acceptance stage" of Covid. Pretty much like the 5 stages of grief really. Denial of its existence in Feb. "it's a just a bad cold" "it won't happen here" Fear and anger in March as the USA failed to prepare for a pandemic and wondering what would happen. Bargaining in May/June-"I would wear a mask if we could go back to normal" Depression during summer months as we missed our normal celebrations, events and activities. Acceptance-happening now (for some) as we learn to live with Covid and precede with a new normal for awhile.
