M has 24 in her virtual class. Everyone is virtual though, there’s no in person option. Can confirm that 24 first graders on Zoom is as bad as it sounds. Fortunately they’re usually mostly muted.

This is us, too. 24 virtual 1st grader. Everyone is always muted, though. I do hear the teacher remind them to show good listening skills/not be playing with anything in their hands/etc.

H doesn’t start for another two weeks (the 16th) but I anticipate his first grade class being big, too. He’s virtual. Womp womp.

J's teacher kicked 3 kids out of their zoom room the other day for not paying attention/goofing off. It was savage and I loved it.
Apparently they got a stern talking to after the main session ended.

As a teacher, I get it. But it still makes little kid me sad.

I think Ms teachers are a little OTT about sitting still and not fidgeting during meetings. Pockets in seats, feet on floor, no eating, no wiggling, no chewing on anything, no playing with your hair, and on and on. Last year M used a chew necklace to help her pay attention, but I haven’t broached it with her teachers this year since they’ve been so strict. They will turn off the video if the kids can’t comply. I feel like they are 6, and should be given a little grace considering the situation.

I allow fidget items and small Lego wheeled items. The 3rd grade pets a stuffed animal. I'd rather have that then the screaming I've witnessed (from kids).

I do love that A's teacher will put their meeting on "pause" for a movement break when she sees that a lot of the kids are wiggly. She'll share her screen and do a quick GoNoodle with the class. Our school is a "movement school" so the teachers are well versed in kiddos needing movement in their days to better focus.

They set a timer on the screen and tell them to walk away, use the bathroom, get a snack or water.

Heck, I can barely sit still for a zoom meeting. I took a class a month or so ago and I was so excited when I noticed that I could turn off my video. I feel like if I'm sitting in a classroom I can drink coffee, fidget, shift, doodle, etc to help me pay attention without anyone else being distracted. But in a zoom meeting my face is RIGHT THERE and I need to be in constant rapt attention. It was driving me crazy until I noticed other people turning off their screens. Expecting small children not move is bonkers and ableist.

Ok, but ^^ why is there a bicycle in their dining room? If you don't have a garage or a backyard and bikes get stolen in your neighborhood....

I’m having a really hard time getting started. I’m doubting our decision to homeschool now that everyone has gone back. All of our neighbours went back and our cousins that we were hoping to cohort with changed their minds and sent their two boys. I’m just feeling lonely and overwhelmed and like I’m failing to give my kids any opportunities to socialize.

I just joined my city's homeschool FB group, and there are park playdates on their events page. Remember too that socialization isn't just about being only with your own peers. Hugs. All schooling is hard right now.

You just have to choose the least-wrong choice for your family from all of the shitty options and that is what you have done. You've done good.

Thanks guys. Last few months have been really hard (for everyone, obviously) but last week was like, super duper shitty and awful and I was deep in The Pit. I was hoping we would get out this week to the homeschool meet-ups but now we’re self-isolating. I’m just lonely and miss hanging out with other grown ups.
ETA: and clearly projecting my own feelings in to my kids.

So last night at 10pm we got a posting saying our 1st grader should: 1. If the have tradition Mexican clothing, wear them today 2. Take a cereal box, cut it (no instructions for us on how) and decorate it for today. Maybe we need to talk about appropriate deadlines for assignments....

OH yea, I have some traditional mexican clothing right here... nope. Like, even if it wasn't asked at 10pm, is that a thing most people have lying around? I mean, I guess if I still lived in San Diego it would be more likely.

You could go cholo with khakis and a wife beater and docs.
