I'm feeling deeply cynical this week as we hit actual summer months and weather and see cases spike everywhere. Our case counts (as in my county) aren't enormous but they are going up and up. And all the people who were like "well we'll be fine for summer because it will go away just like all the others" I'm just sitting here arms crossed stewing feeling like the long long road is just getting longer.

My governor is holding a press conference right now. Like many states, we are seeing a huge increase in cases for those under 30. We also had a 27% increase in children cases from last week to today which has me worried. The numbers are still so low here compared to the rest of the US, but the stats are just making me more committed to staying the eff home. I also appreciate her attempts at acknowledging the "no one wants to be told what to do, but this isn't governance, this is a health response to a health issue," and talking about how patriotic it is to sacrifice for our country and not celebrate this weekend. It's kind of pathetic to have to pander that way but I hope it at least helps sway some of the people who think it isn't a big deal. The fines for no masks I can see being a new point of uproar for the anti maskers here, and not sure how they'll enforce it, honestly. Especially with local law enforcement here having said they'll refuse to do any such thing. Sacrifice as patriotism was highly effective messaging during WWII. I think it's smart (and true!) to use that messaging now

ALSO the parks department just canceled camps for next week. This is after they canceled this week's camp kind of late in the game as well.
My kid has seen one other child in person since March and my boss is being a way about me working from home; we were quite looking forward to camp. So this is neat.

500 Delta employees test positive for Covid link I'm reading it as their total numbers, not an outbreak. Is that right? Either way, I am not into flying for a while. I am not looking forward to the conversations closer to the holidays when we tell our families that but health is health. They'll understand.

Michigan is seeing outbreaks again coming from crowded bars. My BIL and 4 of his co-workers all tested positive and my sister got tested today. Our Governor just shut down indoor bars again so at least that's good. I just hope things don't get really bad.

All I can think of is the virus shedding as those employees were going about their daily work duties, potentially with exposure to a lot of people from a lot of different places.

Nydia Velázquez was trying to hold out to get some transparency out of the SBA on small business relief but ultimately after the Senate passed PPP extension, the House decided to do a stop-gap bill while they, I assume, work to pursue transparency. So PPP funding through 8 August passed the Senate and House unamended and only awaits the Occupant's signature.

Sorry that was a lot of in the weeds. Basically small businesses can continue to apply for grants and loans as of now, provided the bill gets signed, while House Democrats try to leverage the Trump administration to explain where the hell all the money has been going because they refuse to say.

The high school I teach at released a lot of our procedures for in person learning, if anyone is curious.
Besides mandatory masks, we've changed things like no lockers. They will be giving every student that wants one a clear backpack and we as teachers are encouraged to have them leave their books at home for homework/remote days and in class provide instruction without books.
They will be taking temperatures of everyone before getting on a bus or in the building, so we're also starting a little later. We make up time by eliminating our four lunch periods into a class/lunch time. I'm unsure of the total logistics, but we will be taking our 4th hour class to the Cafeteria to get to-go lunches they will eat in our room. (this would've been the best year ever to be assigned 4th hour planning time!)
That's all I can think of right now. We have planned remote learning days one day a week.

Early on it was all about setting up child care options and letting us take leave and now it’s like “yeah, you can’t count it as work hours if your taking care of your kid too” and I’m like how, sway? Nothing has changed. Make it make sense.

Our district just sent out an update email that says they're working under the assumption that ALL three models of learning (in-school, distance and hybrid) will be used at one point or another during the school year. I mean I theoretically knew that was possible but I'm having a hard time processing that. Our school district just sent out a survey but the questions make me think we are doing something similar with different plans thru the year. Selfishly, I would love for a full in school school year only because my kiddo is a senior this year. And I want him to experience all of that. But I'd rather him not be sick either so I understand it being something else.

My former workplace is opening to customers in 3 weeks and I get sweaty even thinking about what that would’ve meant for our family if I still worked there.

I blew up. Like not only are we mid pandemic and everything is closed but I'm not about to ask my family members who all have valid reasons to say no at this time. So.

Our governor was going to announce school plans today and decided to put it off for a while longer. People are pissed but he said our curve has to at least flatten before in person learning happens. We flattened for a few days last week and then went back to climbing. Set a new record day high of over 1800 cases today. And that's before 4th of July. I think he's trying to see if the curve will flatten otherwise the call today would have been 100% remote.
H and I were just talking, and I think the best plan at this point is for at least elementary, and possibly middle, to be in-person so that more social distancing can happen. Specials and elective teacher become grade level teachers for a year? (Here K-3 class sizes are capped at 18, so it is more doable). While we want everyone at school, older kids can stay home, and the learning they do is more conducive to remote learning than younger kids. Plus, my H's high school has 2400 kids and 30 -35 kids in a class. There is no way to social distance, especially with class changes. I am much more worried about his exposure (seeing 100+ kids a day) than mine or DD's.
If this happens, I think we'll keep DS home from daycare and pay someone to watch him half a day in our home. Our daycare closed for the time being, so I've been sending the kids' main teachers $100/week. Both kid's teachers have been very cautious this whole time, so they would be perfect assuming they're okay with the risk on their end. I couldn't pay more a week than I do for him now, but it would only be half a day, and we would pay cash so that they could continue to draw unemployment (that sounds bad but it's not a living wage).
At this point, I really think this would put my mind at ease the most and would be the most workable for the most amount of people.

My very quarantined asthmatic 9yo has developed pneumonia after 3 weeks of uncontrolled coughing. Is it Covid or is it because covid dramatically changed the hospital's asthma protocol and no early intervention was allowed due to limited resources? I'm stressed because our pedi said she wont see her again, that the ER is where we go next.
Not to fear monger. The big picture with reports of TX fudging numbers and seeing scarce resources first hand... Y'all I'm terrified for what is to come next

From Rachel Maddow....
There are 446 million people living in the countries of the EU. They reported 3k and some change cases today. Arizona has a population of 7.2 million and had 4k and some change cases today.
Cool cool cool.

I hope he is ok and doesn’t need to go to the ER. I wonder if there is any way to know which ones are faring better right now. Can your pedi advise?

jaygee we have a major pedi hospital, which I worked for up until recently. I was part of the asthma team, so it's a little of I know to much. I really trust my pedi and will follow her advice but my gut is just in knots.

I’m so frustrated with my sister. She lives in Berkeley. Tomorrow she’s hopping on a plane to fly to Santa Bárbara for the long weekend to hang out at her BFs moms house with her BF, our cousin whose not socially isolating with them but lives in SF, and her BFs brother who lives in LA and is heading up to SB. Like wut.
