wedding since not a requirement I'd just say thanks for the recommendation and let it go. Almost free for the summer.

That's good wedding, get a plan in place for the summer and keep at it so C knows that you are serious about it and he'll be fine come Sept.

Hey. I slept in and was almost late for my chiro appt. Afterwards we ran a couple of errands and are now at home. I was considering taking the girls to the zoo today but the wind is crazy so that plan is out. Hopefully tomorrow is better. I gotta get walking! wedding I’m glad that summer school isn’t required. I think C and you need a break from all that. Good luck with the baseball games tonight peachsmama. Is there a chance you could pop over to M’s game to watch a little bit here and there?

wedding I know you already talked to her, but I have a lot of thoughts I want to share: 1) Do you know what reading level he's at? My friend is an elementary school teacher and she sent me a list a while ago about the levelled reading and where they should be at for each grade beginning, middle and end, and what is considered ahead/behind, etc. The standards for end of year K are not that high. 2) Our teacher reached out to me to discuss that S is way above grade level. I don't say this to be an ass, I say it because one of the apps I have S on is timed. He got every answer wrong. Something about the timing for him made him unable to do anything. So I would not take a timed test over distance learning too seriously. 3) I took a phone call while I was typing and forgot the rest of my points so I will stop here. LMK if you are interested in that list. She also sent me examples of books on each of the levels.

Oh wedding I remembered something else. Kids need a break from structure. That's the other thing the teacher stressed. She said try to get the work done in 20-40 minute spurts then do something fun. She said in class they aren't doing work for the whole day straight and it shouldn't be like that here. I think C is burnt out, to be honest.

Thanks everyone. Just for transparency here is what she sent back when I asked to see the assessment. ____________________________ It’s a district assessment so I can’t share the actual assessment but I can tell you the three things we tested: Writing cvc words with short vowels: he did great! Reading cvc nonsense words (guc, git, hoz...): goal was to read 12 in a minute, Callan read 1. Reading sight words (like, she, what...): goal was to read 13 in one minute, Callan read 5. Untimed sight words assessment with Mrs. McLarnon: whole K list-Callan read 31/45 needed mastery. Lowercase letter ID: he got all correct! Lowercase letter sounds:Callan got 22/26 but needed mastery. Tomorrow he will do a segmenting assessment with Mrs. McLarnon. Not sure if those details as of yet. ___________________________________ The nonsense words he messed up and gave up. I didn't pay attention to the sight words. We were planning to work on those and reading this summer anyway. Let me know if this changes your opinion at all. He definitely needs work but I don't understand the timed assessments at all. I think the nonsense words are just dumb. I don't make Matthew practice them 🤷♀️ according to his teacher its just a kindgarten thing and he's not graded on it. That's just what she told me. Not sure how it works elsewhere. I still don't think summer school is neccessary. They wanted M to do a summer reading program and I said no. I saved all the stories from his reading coach and we practice them and his sight words. Thats enough for summer to me.

wedding I'm glad you talked to them. I wouldn't do summer learning either. Obviously the current situation is not ideal and if he was in the normal school environment, I think you both know the outcome would have been different. tgrimes Your mom...she is something. I hope surgery goes smoothly and he's home recovering quickly. Why is he having surgery so quickly? Or did she think she told you a long time ago?

I feel a bit calmer after our call. I went in guns blazing but she was actually more understanding than I expected. That's great. And honestly, teachers need to be expecting to spend a few weeks catching kids up. Not everyone has active, involved parents who are practicing sight words on a regular basis.

Are nonsense words a thing? I’ve never seen them in Josie’s work. Is it so ghe kids have to work phonetically sounding words out and not rely on previous knowledge of letter combinations? ETA: I rewrote to clarify bc I wasn’t making sense

Are nonsense words a thing? I’ve ever seen them in my life. Is it so they work phonetically and not rely on previous knowledge of letter combinations? Our teacher does them a bit with them on Fundations where she dictates the word and has them try to spell it. We don't even turn that in. It's a 15 minute video they send out. It's usually a handful of sentences and then a few words that are both real and nonsense. I think it's exactly what you said - to get them to think phonetically. But I can't imagine grading on that.

Yes partially, it’s to show their ability of phonetic decoding with ‘words’ that have no meaning, but have letter combinations that you can find in real words.

Apparently last week he had to be tested for covid to make sure he didn't have it before surgery and they had to quarantine at home since then. I've spoken to her since then and she didn't say anything about it. She wasn't very detailed on what's being done exactly. Something about the nerves to see if that stops his pain.

nam2013 Are you teaching your kids English? Is your H as fluent as you are? Do most people where you are speak English fluently? I don't know what but I was just wondering that... Hahahaha! No I’m not actively teaching my kids english, but ds can count, know colours and lots of animals. He’ll understand short sentences. My h is not as fluent speaking as I am, but still above average level, he mostly reads in English too (Lots and lots of non fiction history 🤦🏼♀️) and can watch anything without needing subtitles. Most people have a basic knowledge of English over here, all kids learn English at school starting at a young age. It also helps that shows are subtitled in stead of synchronised, you’re being exposed to English a lot. I’ve always loved the language, started reading books at 14 (and still do), at university took as courses that where taught in English as possible, went on an exchange for ten days with Purdue university & eventually wrote my masters thesis in English. English is a more eloquent language than dutch, there are simply more words to express what you mean, I guess that why I love it . ETA added days to the exchange to clarify.
