I went to bed a little after 7 last night. I feel so much better today! Evie napped 3 hours after we got home and ate lunch yesterday. Her and H came to bed shortly after I did and she's still sleeping. We just decided to put her in our bed last night. The doctors told us the ketamine causes very vivid dreams and with her sleep walking history, it wasn't a chance we wanted to take. I got all caught up on work yesterday when she was asleep. So I only have to use 4 hours of PTO instead of an entire day. I have a pedi today at 1. Evie is going to go to my moms during that time. My mom said she really wanted to see her before we leave on vacation...your wish is granted!

Morning!
I think we’re meeting my sister and nephew for lunch, and I need to finish sanding the headboards. DH may run the kids up to the pool if our usual afternoon storms hold off.

It's been over a week now and H hasn't asked for his paci since we took it away. It's still taking him a bit longer to fall asleep but so far so good. We bought him the okay to wake clock but he doesn't give a shit about staying in bed till the sun appears on his clock. He keeps telling me but the sun is up outside. Touche kid.

mwhip I just caught up I think (Tapa eats replies sometimes) What was the final diagnosis? I’m glad she is out and doing well. No infection, they think a virus settled into her knee joint, causing the swelling and warmth. I'm just to watch for additional swelling, if the area turns red, or if her disposition changes, then take her to the ER. I had never heard of this, but I've since talked to a few friends who have had it happen to their kids. Even one of my nephews, when he was young, had it happen. So weird.

C had his year end assessments the last two weeks. No problems with math but the teacher said he is below the benchmark for reading and word recognition. She recommends summer learning.
I think it’s bullshit. I listened to the assessment yesterday and she had him do the following:
-she said a word with a vowel sound and he had to write the word. He got all but one and then corrected himself.
-she had him read “nonsense” words. Which aren’t real words. He struggled with that.
-she had him read sight words and timed it to see how many he would get in a minute. Why the pressure? I don’t know. But he was flustered and missed some at the start. He has a one on one four times a week with the assistant teacher for word recognition and he gets every single one. Why is that not factored in?
-he had to write the alphabet. He got his d backwards.
I’m pissed because the teacher seems to be basing his learning only on this stupid assessment which can’t even be done as it should be because it’s not in person. She knows distance learning is not working for him so why would summer learning help?
I’m hoping to talk to her about this today. Dh is home and is annoyed as well.
Am I just being a mother that doesn’t think her special snowflake should go to summer school? Please let me know if I am. I do have some feelings about my kid struggling with something that came so easily to me so it could color my judgment.

wedding In my opinion, it absolutely should not only be based on his end of year assessment. If he was doing fine with the assistant teacher, then why does it matter? Some people just aren't good under pressure. From everything you've told us, I don't believe he needs summer school. Make sure he reads every day and occasionally have him do some writing over the summer, if you're worried. I'd be upset.

wedding It seems like that is a pretty strict assessment for kinder. B is in grade 1 and his testing and scores will be based on the entire year and distance learning, not just one assessment and B's school is much harder than any other grade 1's in my area within other school districts. I wouldn't do summer school because the areas she is saying there are problems with are easily helped with daily reading of at least 15 minutes and there are a shit ton of resources available for sight words to make a list and quiz him yourself. I don't even know if it's worth your effort to chat with her about it cause it seems like whatever you say you guys wont see eye to eye on it so IMO it's not worth the frustration. Maybe send an email outlining the disagreement and leave it at that. Make a plan for light writing, daily reading and sight words and go from there. ETA: maybe start asking what kind of reading he would be into, what format? B was really into comics for a bit and it was good for him, shorter sentences and a fast moving story to keep him interested.

vino I don't know how everyone else's school districts work, but in ours he'd be required to do summer school to move on to the next grade, if the teacher requests it.

That’s total BS wedding. I would be upset, too. I think they are being unrealistic about everything. I bet a lot of kids get that recommendation based on what you said about the assessment. What exactly would summer school consist of? I agree that summer reading and maybe sight word practice would be enough. I’m sorry you are having to deal with this crazy teacher. I wonder if this is an issue throughout all grades with the teachers.

Morning! Big kids are at ILs again so it’s just me and L. MIL was a hair stylist for many years so she is going to cut the kids hair for the first time, since i don’t know how long it will be before they can get in to our usual person. I think she’s nervous to do it, but anything is better than me attempting to cut it.
I’m finally going through N’s school materials to clear it off the kitchen counter for the first time since March.
Our restaurants can open indoor dining today at 50% capacity. Dh an I might try and get lunch somewhere. Much excite.

Wow, wedding. That is ridiculous. I can’t believe the assessment is that in depth for distance learning. N’s “grade” for distance learning was essentially pass/fail based on whether or not the child was active/turned in 2 activities of choice at least 3 days a week.

Hi.
Hump day and I have a slight headache. It’s feels like it’s trying to go away, and I hope so. Nothing exciting today. M2 woke up crying one hour before my alarm, so I lost out on an hour of sleep because I couldn’t fall back to sleep. I’m tired.

I think testing can be one component but it shouldn’t be the end all be all. I have some real feels about standardized testing because of the one day performative pressure of it. I think if she were continuously seeing the same problems all along with C then maybe summer learning might be appropriate but I would not base it off of one assessment. Also everyone needs to provide a little bit of grace in this very strange time. Encourage kids to read. Ask parents to read with them but to create another distance learning environment seems unnecessary to me.

wedding different country, different system, but this sounds like a lot of pressure for a 6yo. And imo basing this on one moment, normally but especially in these bizarre times, seems ridiculous. I use these type of single moment assessments to check for dyslexia markers, these can be used for ‘regular’ students in addition to other more longitudinal measurements.

I have 2 extra kids today and both boys have baseball games tonight. Of course at the exact same time and before A can get there. So bil and his fiancé are coming to help me. Luckily they're at the same park. They were supposed to be back to back on the same field. Now they're on opposite ends of the park at the same time. So frustrating. And its M's first game and I won't get to see it all.

This was us, too (in a very competitive/high-achieving school district, I might add). wedding I wouldn’t stress about summer learning. As long as he’s being promoted to 1st, at the end of the day it’s up to the parent to participate, I presume; C obviously has educated, involved parents and I’m sure you guys will be reading, etc with him this summer. I think that’s fine and nothing more ‘formal’ needs to be done, IMO. There’s going to be a leaving curve in the fall for all these kids, anyway.

mwhip so glad she is recovering well. That must have been scary. wedding agreed that it's BS. If it's just a recommendation that you can ignore and he can promote to 1st grade without a summer program I'd just mumble "bitch" under my breath and move on. If he has to do required work I'd email the teacher and cc: the principal with your concerns. What you described and especially under the circumstances you described it sounds like she's just out for C. It's very normal for kids to still be mixing up B/D occasionally. It's beyond the average reading level for a 6 yo to read nonsense words without context (even with context like a Dr. Seuss story they can be complicated, but without that kids are looking for information to have the letters they are sounding out make sense). Even excellent students will mess up on a timed test now and then, obviously it shouldn't be based on one go-around when he does well with the assistant teacher. I guess the one positive out of all of this is that you don't have to worry about getting an end of the year teacher gift.

Hi ladies. The weather has been crappy here (I blame my husband because he announced that he's turning off the heat for the season and the next day the weather went to shit). The girls have riding lessons today and they are excited to try the trail.
They discovered Roblox and have been obsessed. It's like a mini version of the Sims. I used to play the Sims a lot. I made custom ones with my family's photos. My Sim husband became depressed and wouldn't go to work and fell in love with my sister Sim. It was a cluster.

Thanks everyone. Just for transparency here is what she sent back when I asked to see the assessment.
____________________________
It’s a district assessment so I can’t share the actual assessment but I can tell you the three things we tested:
Writing cvc words with short vowels: he did great!
Reading cvc nonsense words (guc, git, hoz...): goal was to read 12 in a minute, Callan read 1.
Reading sight words (like, she, what...): goal was to read 13 in one minute, Callan read 5.
Untimed sight words assessment with Mrs. McLarnon: whole K list-Callan read 31/45 needed mastery.
Lowercase letter ID: he got all correct!
Lowercase letter sounds:Callan got 22/26 but needed mastery.
Tomorrow he will do a segmenting assessment with Mrs. McLarnon. Not sure if those details as of yet.
___________________________________ The nonsense words he messed up and gave up. I didn't pay attention to the sight words. We were planning to work on those and reading this summer anyway.
Let me know if this changes your opinion at all. He definitely needs work but I don't understand the timed assessments at all.

wedding, It doesn’t really change my opinion. If you wanted to be the bigger person, you could ask her if she could provide resources to help C over the summer. Resources you could work on at home in your own timetable. You could also ask to speak to the first grade team of teachers to see what they expect for September ( this might step on the K teachers toes so I’d maybe ask her to get the info)

wedding so her bringing up summer school of summer school a recommendation or requirement for grade 1 enrollment come Sept? We just got off the Zoom call and she said no, it isn't required. She did say she was mixed on recommending him because she knows he hates distance learning so she wanted to leave it up to us. We chose not to and will work on it at home. I'm glad she is not "Requiring" it. From the way she said it in our call, it is something that can be required.
