Ours is only closed for two weeks but I have a feeling we won’t be back until Mat since the CDC recommended 8 weeks. We went fast. We were currently on spring break this week, so last night they announced, due to the CDC and county recommendations, that they would close through April 5th. Just before 5, the governor held a news conference announcing the closure. Evie seems fine so far but I dont think it has sunk in. My SMIL said they will have to do some kind of continued learning for the year to count...it cant just end. So hopefully we can go to the school to get stuff. I mean, she has stuff there still...we have to, right?

This is exactly where I am. I just read an article that Connecticut might close for the rest of the year and it makes me incredibly sad to have this memory for Josie’s first formal year of schooling.

It looks like we’ll be moving forward with distance-learning on Monday. For those of you who are already doing it, is the district mandating specific hours that your child must be online or is it assignment driven ?

+whatever to really sad about this ending the kids' school early. I've been dealing with it pretty well but it hit me after my meeting at work. Cass loves school. Maddie tries to act too-cool-for-school, but she loves it too and her friends. It makes me feel bad that they are going to miss so much. And yet I'm fortunate because this could be much harder--they could be in HS where the learning is a lot more crucial, it could be their senior year and they could be missing prom/graduation, they could have LDs and need extra attention. *sigh*
And when things started to amp up last week it still looked like we were going to be fine to still go on our Disney trip in May. Now I don't know that will happen. Cass asked for our countdown last night and I told her we just don't know anymore.
I was going to test for black belt next month.
I know in the grand scheme these are all little things and we'll look back and this will just be a blip. But for now it sucks and I'm having a hard time not crying.

For those of you who are already doing it, is the district mandating specific hours that your child must be online or is it assignment driven ? Ours is assignment-driven. We received lesson plans for 2 weeks with Language Arts, Math & "Content" activities for each day. Our school uses Seesaw so we are encouraged to upload photos of their work, or videos of the students reading, etc., and that is how the teachers can communicate back with students. They can also do some work (via a 'Paint' type program) in Seesaw. We have a bunch of other links to educational programs thru a portal and some of the assignments direct us there for support materials, and they sent home some readers and a math workbook, as well. For ex, for Language Arts yesterday we had to read a fiction story of our choosing and B had to retell the story (verbally to me) emphasizing "Beginning/Middle/End", then draw a pic and write a couple sentences about his favorite part. Granted we're only 2 days in, but so far, so good. Our school set 'office hours' for the teachers so during that time block each day is when they are guaranteed to be available for phone calls, email, etc if needed.

flamingo, thank you! All of that (Minus the seesaw app) seems like what they have already sent home in a packet. Hopefully it will be more of the same because it’s familiar to Josie but still challenging enough. My girlfriend in Jersey said that hers is assignment driven but it takes her all day to get through things. I can’t see how that is helpful to anyone - kids, working parents, stay at home parents, etc.

guster I posted too soon. We are assignment driven. She gave us websites and activities. It’s set by weeks not days so we are doing the paper stuff first then will move to the stuff on the iPad.

MHs mood has now changed to straight anxiety (which is probably what the mood was to begin with). He has a webinar in the morning to learn about his department’s specific plan for distance learning and he is losing his mind that all the work he has previously created is all for naught. He is not accepting reason, logic, sympathy, empathy, or rolled eyed annoyance so I am going to bed to watch Private Practice.

Sorry it was tough being at B’s school. vino cagoldi Don’t feel bad about daycare. We have to do what we have to do to get through this time. M2’s school and M’s after school is still open. We are sending M2 for now and M will go one day a week since we are still paying. I want to keep things kinda normal for M2, too for now.

My district (where I work and my kids attend) did assignments by grade and content area. There are no deadlines and we can’t hold kids responsible if they do nothing. I’m not good at no deadlines. I made deadlines for my own children for each day and I posted suggested deadlines for my students. I also modified all the work since I teach special ed. I have reached out by email and through my Google Classroom but I’m hoping to start calling kids tomorrow that haven’t replied in Google classroom yet. I have to try to connect with bilingual colleagues to help with calls. I wish I had my student’s personal cell numbers because it would be easier to talk directly to the kids. We have to keep “office hours” from 8-11 but I told them I could call any time. It would be much easier to make calls during C’s nap.

Just today I tried my hardest to hold back my annoyance with MH. What’s crazy is it wasn’t even anything major. Just his questions about what I’m doing is enough to make me want to jump off a ledge. It would be great if I could just work every day for now.

I got notice that H’s school will also be closed next week. I assume that I will get an email tomorrow that preschool is closed too. I’m guessing we will get some distance learning stuff for next week.

It looks like we’ll be moving forward with distance-learning on Monday. For those of you who are already doing it, is the district mandating specific hours that your child must be online or is it assignment driven ? Seems to be different by district. Our school sent out packets with sections for each category (reading, social, music etc) and recommended a certain number of hours of each per week totally long 10. And said we could add our own stuff as we see fit. So fairly open

Well. Now we’re under a shelter in place order, too. No gatherings except single households and no leaving the house, even for work unless you’re first responder, healthcare provider, working at a grocery store, etc.

Good luck cagoldi. So what does that mean for kid transfers? Can people go out in their yards? Do you have everything you need.

I texted my friend tonight stating exactly this. Ds has been in his little group for over two years now (kids start school the day after they turn 4 here), it’ll be so weird and sad if he goes to first grade without all the passing rites... he’s emotionally really not ready now.

I'm not really that sad for E about not finishing the year, but I think it's because she's currently very uneffected by it, I don't think she fully understands.
I do feel bad for my nephew who is graduating from KState this May, whose graduation ceremony has been cancelled. He works for the school and isn't allowed on campus, so he can't work. But he still has to pay his rent, even though there is no point of him going back to school. He contacted his new employer to see if they would allow him to start early.
And my niece, who graduates from HS in May. She will likely (although not yet announced) miss her senior prom and graduation. I'm old, but I remember what the end of your senior year was like...you did nothing but hang out with your friends, discussing that you wouldn't see each other daily.
What a crushing blow for both of them after all their hard work.

Good luck cagoldi. So what does that mean for kid transfers? Can people go out in their yards? Do you have everything you need. People can still go in their yards. Wish we had one!😂 I’m not sure what it means for kid transfers but I think if Pete insists on taking the kids, I can’t legally refuse him his visitation time.
